One of the greatest leading and supporting actors, gave great performances in smaller roles, and always remembered for " Marty".

A great 61 year career, and he would have kept acting if he had not been taken ill suddenly.

He was on talk shows chatting at the age of 94 years old. Will be remembered by many generations.

Born 1917 Died 2012 age 95 years old

In 1996, Ernest purchased a bus and travelled across the United States to see the country and meet his many fans.

2012 had agreed to star in Red2.

Until 1962, he was a heavy smoker. He quit that year, and became a militant anti-smoker.
At age 91 he wrote an autobiography, "Ernie", which is a loose, conversational recollection of highlights from his acting career and notable events from his personal life. Which I had personally signed by him at a book signing as a bookshop in London, he was so friendly.

Though he occasionally feuded with Mickey Rooney, they were also great friends and worked together many
times over the years.

Longtime friend of Adam West, Glenn Ford, who he went and visited often.

Was very good friends with: Shirley Jones, John Forsythe, Jane Wyman, Gavin MacLeod, Adam West, Brian Keith, Eddie Albert, Michael Landon, Danny Thomas, Telly Savalas, Karl Malden, Carroll O'Connor, Mickey Rooney, Carl Ballantine, Bob Hastings, John Wayne, Anthony Quinn, Robert Horton, Angela Lansbury, Jack Elam, Joan Rivers, Leonard Nimoy, Tony Curtis, William Holden, Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Robert Conrad, Larry Manetti, Joe Mantegna, Lisa Rinna, Robert Aldrich, Robert Fuller, Alex Cord, John McIntire, Charlton Heston, George Kennedy, Angie Dickinson, Don Rickles, Lee Marvin, Montgomery Clift, Robert Mitchum, Christopher Lee, A.C. Lyles, Red Buttons, Bob Herron, Marty Allen, Bo Hopkins, Barbara Eden, Della Reese, Beverly Garland and George Lindsey. He always said be nice to people and he was and had many friends.

Was involved in a plane crash 1996

Had move knees replaced in later years.

A live long Republican.

My Favourites of his many great films

From Here To Eternity
Bad Day Ay Black Rock
Vera Cruz
Marty(where he beat S.Tracy, F.Sinatra, S.Tracy and James Dean for the Oscar)
The Flight of the Phoenix
Ice Station Zebra
The Dirty Dozen

Emperor Of The North
EScape to New York

Barbara Saw this topic and I had to mention an anecdote I heard someone tell on a radio talk show some years ago. It was around the time of the Oscars and they were talking about Oscar winners and Borgnine's name came up.
So as the story goes, Borgnine was making a movie with Spencer Tracy when he got cast in "Marty." And he told Tracy about it and Tracy advised him not to take the role of a sweet, middle aged butcher who falls in love - he told Borgnine his "money roles" were playing the heavy, the villain, etc. But Borgnine said he just felt he had to take this role. So he makes Marty and come Oscar night he and Tracy are both up for Best Actor - Tracy for the movie they made together. And they call Borgnine's name and when he goes up to get the award, Spencer Tracy grabs him by the sleeve and pulls him down and says, "You never listen, do you?"

Kandice | 2039 comments Escape from New York and Willard. Borgnine certainly chose eclectic projects! He seemed to excel at all of them.

Funny anecdote. Thanks for that. Was the movie they made together Bad Day at Black Rock'?

Charles van Buren | 7 comments The Wild Bunch followed closely by the 1964 McHale's Navy movie even though Tim Conway steals the show.
