And, of course, the Selected were being announced tonight and Leola had submitted her application as soon as she finished filling it out. She knew her chances were slim, but to think she even had the opportunity to meet the prince stirred butterflies in her stomach. "Kittie, dear, don't you have research to be doing? The Report won't be on for another hour." her mother called from the kitchen. Leola's gaze flickered to the detailed notes about beluga whales in her lap. Surely it could wait. Anything could wait when it came to the crown prince. Her mother peeks her head around the corner. "Kittie? Did you hear me?" Leola presses her lips into a fine line and begins to sign to her mother. She knew it was a quick way for her mother to leave her be. "I'll do it later, I promise." she signs quickly, turning her gaze back to the television Her mother nods, obviously understanding she didn't want to talk. Leola's signing had become a habit she used when she wanted to avoid speaking, even if it was to her own mother. She tried to do it less in public and around strangers, but sometimes it just slipped. That will have to change if I'm selected, she thinks to herself. Eventually, the Report started. Leola's mother had offered her a cup of tea to ease her nerves before snuggling close. Leola had only ever allowed her mother to get that close to her after what had happened with her father. The reporter rambles for a bit about politics, which only adds to Leola's nerves. She lifts her steaming mug to her lips with shaky hands, taking a long sip of the fragrant liquid. She kept her eyes glued to the prince. Occasionally, he would look directly at the camera, causing her to blush. (She was imagining him looking at her, rather than an annoying camera.) Soon enough, the time to announce the Selected rolled around. Leola was now shaking so violently, her mother had to take her mug. "I'm so nervous." she signs, tremoring the entire time. Nervous as she was, she was also very excited, and at the same time, anticipating heartbreak. The thought of watching Felis fall in love with someone through a lifeless screen was devastating to her. Even if she were Selected and turned away, it would hurt less to know that the prince had gotten the opportunity to love her and ultimately didn't think she was the one. Leola could make her peace with that. Girls began to be named. Leola was a bit disheartened to see some familiar faces -- faces of well-known models, athletes, and business owners, all of whom were rich and jaw-droppingly gorgeous. Surely an early graduate with no real job would stand a chance next to them. Then she heard it. The name that stirred so many emotions inside of her that she felt the urge to vomit. "Lady Leola Smythe of Yukon!" There she was. Her picture, the one she had fussed over for hours trying to get ready for. Her smiling face, beaming at the royals on the other side of the screen. Her. The perfectly brewed tea had long been spilt. The accepted volume of the household had long been exceeded. The phone that hadn't rung for a week rang and didn't stop ringing for hours.

"Good...I-I saw yer on the telervissin." he states drunkenly. "Yuh looked good." "Thanks. Was that all?" Leola spats in a low voice. It was easier for her to get feisty when her father was miles away and didn't have the opportunity to hurt her. She felt less scared when she talked to him over the phone. "Na...baby, when can I visii yuh? Don' yuh wan yer daddy there when yuh leave?" he slurs. Leola shakes her head despite him being unable to see it. "No. No, please don't come see me." She could hear her father pause, listening to his heavy, drunk breathing. "Why not?" he spits clearly through the phone. "Well, you hurt me last time I saw you. I don't want to recreate that."
