Avery entered her apartment, kicking off her shoes, and tossing her jacket onto the sofa.
It had been the last day of filming for her most recent movie. She was pretty proud of her acting in it. She wondered what the critics would say when it was released.
She had won New Actress of the Year, so it seemed that she had a promising career ahead of her.
She shifted through the mail she had brought in. She knew what would be arriving any day now that the crown prince was nineteen.
And sure enough, there it was.
She tore open the letter and scanned the contents.
A chance to compete for the hand of Crown Prince Felis, huh?
More like a chance to finally get revenge on King Andras.
She smirked, as she headed over to the counter, and grabbed a pen. She quickly filled out the form and readied it to mail out tomorrow.
She was a rising star. Surely, they would consider her. The Selected were supposedly chosen randomly, but she didn't believe that. There was no way the royal family would actually allow that.
But in that case, she should have a better chance. Right?
She headed into her room, grabbed one of her small throwing knives, and tossed it at the picture of His Royal Majesty pinned to the board hanging on her wall.
Sometimes she just needed to take her anger out on the cause of her pain.
"I'll avenge you, Aiden," she whispered, picking up another knife. "I'll make him pay." And if she wasn't chosen... well, she would find another way.
She let the knife fly.
Right between the eyes.

Avery turned on the TV. The Report was just starting. Good.
She took a seat on the sofa, glancing over at the photo of her and Aiden sitting on the end table.
Everyone had always gone on about how similar they looked. Avery felt a bit nervous. Same hair, same eyes, same last name. The king would know who she was. If he even remembered.
Maybe he had such a habit of killing guards for no reason that he didn't keep track. Or maybe Aiden's name and face had been unimportant and unmemorable to him. All that mattered was that he had loved a princess.
Why had Aiden had to fall for a princess? Why not a maid?
She turned back to the TV, as the reporter started announcing the Selected from each province.
There were plenty of girls he had never heard of, but there were other celebrities too. Quite a few of them.
"From St. George, Avery Hawke."
Her picture flashed across the screen.
She had done it. She was in.
She glanced back over at the photo. "I've done it, Aiden."
She leaned back. "Take that Your Majesty."
