Diane: I have a new series of mystery novels set in South America. The second book The Ambivalent Corpse is set in Montevideo, Uruguay, Southwest Brazil, and Iguazu Falls in Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. I think it's a better mystery novel so would recommend it for being more fun to read and giving you three countries for the price of one. The first book in this series The Empanada Affair is set in the city and province of Salta in Northwest Argentina (note: adult content). The third book, "The Surreal Killer" should be published in a few months, and will take our readers to Peru (including Machu Picchu) and to Northern Chile's Atacama Desert.

Ian (pepecan) | 87 comments Dry Season by Dan Smith by Dan Smith was one of my favourite reads last year. It is a literary thriller set in the Amazon rainforest and I don't know anyone in my UK group who has read it and not loved it. Highly recommend it if you're looking for a trip to Brazil.

This series has garnered excellent reviews in the New York Times, the Boston Globe, the Toronto Globe and Mail, the Sherbroke Herald and a long series review in the Wall Street Journal. I'm really surprised no one has mentioned it before.

Leighton Gage | 6 comments The sixth in the Chief Inspector Mario Silva Series launches in hard cover, audio and ebook on the 19th of February. Perfect Hatred
Here's what the Wall Street Journal had to say about the series: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001...
In summary: "Each book is a bit of adventure-travel, with Silva and crew often feeling like tourists within their own country. Yet the Silva investigations have all the step-by-step excitement of a world-class procedural series."

John Minx (john_minx) Copacabana

Having retired from the crime world, Pete Murphy relocates from Liverpool to Rio de Janeiro. Here he throws himself into the wild and sordid nightlife of Copacabana in an effort to forget that brutal murder which forced him into exile.

This self-destructive routine is interrupted by the arrival of John Mullan, a young petty thief who has long idolized Pete, and is now on the run from associates back home. A situation further complicated by the £200,000 of stolen money which John has brought with him.

As the repercussions of this theft become ever more clear, the scene is set for an explosive showdown.

Pete Murphy is about to meet the ghosts of his past head-on.

In Copacabana…

Kate McVaugh | 23 comments The Many Wonders of Costa Contente
If Costa Contente really did exist, it would be in Brazil, even though the country name is never mentioned. Much of the story has its roots in my memories of Brazil as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the late 70's.
For anyone who grabbed a copy during my recent promos, I'd love any feedback - even if you only read the first 2 chapters. (Apologies if this is an inappropriate author comment.)

James Hufferd | 1 comments The narrator, Ana Roiz, sheltered daughter of a well-known journalist in the city of Recife in northeastern Brazil, accepts from among other choices a final internship in the impoverished hamlet of Guararapes located in a scruffy pocket in the seaside hills, to complete her degree in psychoanalysis from the state university. Arriving, she experiences rejection from the sad-sack residents. Then she receives as a gift from the like-minded slightly older proprietress of the local cantina, a crystal ball given her by a traveling peddler... TWILIGHT IN GUARARAPES by James Hufferd

Yolanda (yolanda_areid) | 6 comments A series of mesmerizing poems, Sonnets to the Japim Bird depicts the forbidden love between an Amazonian indigenous woman (a Tupi-Kawahib) and her husband’s guest (a European explorer). In the tradition of English poets, Sonnets to the Japim Bird uses the beautiful cadence of the English language in a haunting tale of love that breaks a sacred taboo in indigenous culture. The epigraph, in Portuguese, means “A woman is a very fine thing”—a saying from the Tupi-Kawahib, an ancient tribal people that live in Brazil.

This is my favorite Brazilian book. It's a young adult romance with student life/university and Wicca. I read all books from this author and I loved them all but this one is my favorite and her most famous in Brazil.

It's free to download on Amazon this weekend: https://www.amazon.com/Until-Find-You...

Luisrafael | 1 comments Brazilian indigenous condemned by the Inquisition [BOOK]

Hi everyone!

I would like to share a very interesting book suggestion on Indigenous History, Brazilian Witchcraft: an indigenous sorcerer condemned by Inquisition.

I am a historian in Brazil, author of the book, and I have been making an effort in recent years to recover the Brazilian indigenous past. In my country, native populations have been ignored and devalued, that's why it's so important to share our stories.

This book talks about the violence that colonial domination caused on Brazilian indigenous people. One of them, named Miguel Pestana, was condemned by the Inquisition for defying the Christian religion. An unusual life trajectory, which helps us to understand more about the native populations of the American continent.

If you found it interesting, I invite you to purchase the book and help the indigenous populations of Brazil: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0BCCY...

Thanks!

The synopsis: Set in 18th century Brazil, this book tells the impressive story of Miguel Ferreira Pestana, famous for being one of the few indigenous people condemned by the Inquisition. Born and raised in a village controlled by Jesuit missionaries, the story of this indigenous person could have remained anonymous and confused with several others if one fact had not definitively changed the course of his existence: the accusations of witchcraft that led to his arrest. It was the records written by the agents of the Inquisition, responsible for his trial, that made possible the recovery of this unusual trajectory. And the accusation that weighed on him gives us indications of an experience that breaks with the persistent commonplace of indigenous passivity in the face of Christian catechesis: Miguel was tried and convicted by the Inquisition for using bags that he believed gave him supernatural powers. Due to his testimonies present in the inquisitorial process, it is possible to give voice to this indigenous person, revealing not only his religiosity, but also diving into his daily life. And we are talking about a life that surprises in many ways. Adept of diverse beliefs, which included a Catholicism with Tupi contours and practices of African origin, Miguel reflected like few others the ethnic and cultural plurality that characterized Brazil. A life story, therefore, that reveals the different forms of insertion of native populations into colonial society and shows that Brazil's past and present have unmistakable indigenous influences.
