In the high-flying, heady world of 1920s aviation, brash pilot Robert “Hitch” Hitchcock’s life does a barrel roll when a young woman in an old-fashioned ball gown falls from the clouds smack in front of his biplane. As fearless as she is peculiar, Jael immediately proves she’s game for just about anything, including wing-walking in his struggling airshow. William Polm Weiland's novels and stories tend to start a little on the slow side, but none of them prove to be disappointing. This lady is a gifted story-teller.  Read a few pages of this one and you'll find your interest picking up, and that interest will grow with just about every page.  Keep going and you'll find that the suspense grows too--until in the last quarter of the book it really starts climbing to a fevered pitch. I had trouble not peeking ahead (but I didn't).

In short, a really good story. Heart-warming and Satisfying in every way. There's an intriguing mystery throughout most of the book, some fantasy aspects, and one heck of a romance. Beyond that is Weiland's just plain good writing, which adds to your reading pleasure. This is a historical novel set in Nebraska's farm country in the early 1900s and revolves around a professional barnstormer pilot who returns to his hometown for an airshow contest he hopes to win. And Weiland's prose neatly and accurately reflects the thinking and talking and colorful figures of speech of the time and place. Not an easy accomplishment for any novelist. Several of those figures of speech had me laughing.

Another thing I like about this novel is the characters and how the author has them interact with each other--so true to life. The difficulty of forgiving, the prejudices, the misunderstandings, the hurts we all suffer in this life--it's all there and more. By the way, the female lead in this story is one of the more unusual ones I have encountered. Also, there's wisdom in this novel for anyone who will read it thoughtfully.

Highly recommended.
