[close] In this presentation, I talk about my novel Childless (about a childless child psychologist who tries to foil a U.S. government plot to remove childhood from the human genome) as a darkly comedic satire to draw attention to the fact that childhood in America is under attack from all sides. I discuss 15 indicators of how this is happening in the U.S., including issues such as the sexualization of children through the media, the decrease in children playing, the use of worksheets and standardized tests in early childhood education, the plight of homeless children, and children who are food-insecure and living in poverty, the failure of the U.S. government to pass adequate child care legislation, the decrease in the age of puberty for both girls and boys, the rise in the number of families without children, the decrease in creativity seen in young children, The illegal use of children in farm work and industrial jobs, and the exposure of children with adult programming in the media. [close] In this video, the author Thomas Armstrong explains the meaning of the term ''neoteny'' (Latin for ''holding youth'') and describes how it functions in the narrative of his novel Childless. In the book, the U.S. government is engaged in genetic engineering to try to extend adulthood backwards to the first few moments after birth (conveniently eliminating childhood from the lifespan). There is also a neurodiverse crew of individuals working on the opposite: a genetic fix to extend childhood into old age, and that's what neoteny is, retarding maturity so that we spend more of our lives in a childlike state of mind. There's a struggle between these two projects and the novel climaxes when the two forces go head to head at Lake Itasca in Northern Minnesota (where they're going to dump human endogenous retroviruses into the source of the Mississippi River).
