[close] Renowned scholar on Indian Temple Architecture, George Michell dissects the ancient city of Hampi and the legends that surround it. From the emergence of the Sangama brothers to the etymology of Hampi, Michell describes the mythological underpinnings of various kingdoms that ruled from Hampi. He elaborates on the irrigations systems that enabled the historic city, the visitors it inspired and the demographics that shaped the city. George Michell sheds light on the cityscape and capital that Hampi once was, he discusses the architecture that dots the city with temples and colonnades that once hosted festivals. Moreover, Michell highlights Sultanate, Dravidian and climatic influences in the architecture at Hampi.

[close] Dr. George Michell delivered a lecture on "Deccan Islamic Architecture: 16th and 17th Centuries" on 14 Feb as part of the CEPT Lecture Series. Drawing from a co-authored book on the same subject, his lecture was peppered with relevant information and exquisite illustrations, some which had been prepared by CEPT students for the publication, led by Claire Reuter. As an architect, Dr. Michell believes in the importance of the measured drawing as a tool to understanding the sites being studied. The talk was followed by a lively round of questions on many aspects of the region.

[close] Leonardo da Vinci - a painter, sculptor, engineer, scientist, inventor and writer - has been enshrined by posterity as the archetypal "renaissance man." Robert Hatcher Hoge, the son of a Baptist minister, was born in Jackson, GA, in the early years of the 20th century. Hoge was also a painter, sculptor, engineer, scientist, inventor and writer and more. His friends considered him a modern renaissance man. For 28 years, Bob Hoge was well known Carmel Valley sculptor and painter, successful both artistically and commercially. In his later years he added poetry, essay writing and autobiography to his accomplishments. This led him to explore the career possibilities open to an author although he was already in his eighties. Hoge radiated the aura of corporation CEO, which he was for several years. He was also a blacksmith, a mechanic and engineer, a salesman and a company president. He also was a serious amateur astronomer and photographer.
