The Adidas Tischtennis is the most iconic sneaker that you've probably never heard of. First introduced in the late ‘70s, this silhouette was, essentially, designed to be a table tennis version of the Stan Smith. It arrived at a time when the sport helped to ease tensions between countries during the Cold War (see “ping pong diplomacy”), and it went on to become the coolest table tennis shoe worn by the coolest table tennis players. And now, it's back.
While the Tischtennis did re-release briefly in 2020, it was only around for a couple of months before it was shelved again. However, 2024's version is said to be a one-to-one remake of the OG from ‘78. Featuring a light and breathable mesh construction in ‘Footwear White,’ it’s contrasted by three green ribbon-like Three Stripes across the lateral and medial sidewalls, just like the original. Light grey suede wraps around the front and back of the trainer, while Adidas' Trefoil logo is stitched on the tongue tag and heel badge.
A dash of canvas makes its way to the lacing system, and all of this rests on top of a hella grippy midsole that's housed completely in gum rubber – just like the Samba.
The Samba is currently the most popular sneaker on Planet Earth. Austin Butler likes ‘em. Timothée Chalamet, too. And judging by the fact that every single Lost Mary-wielding millennial has a pair, you’re probably a fan as well. But with the Tischtennis' mad backstory, classic aesthetic, and super versatile materials, it's got everything it takes (and more) to be the next Samba. And with more colourways set to be revealed very soon, it's just going to get more and more hype-y by the minute.
The Adidas Tischtennis ‘Footwear White’ is set to drop at Adidas, the Confirmed app, and select stockists within the coming weeks for £85.
