The best citrus perfumes to wear now
For an instant mood-boost, spritz one of these sparkling scents which are perfect for spring and beyond
Citrus is a cornerstone of perfumery, commonly utilised as a scene-setting top note in a scent. But while it can lend a sparkle to a fragrance, it can also steal the show. As the main player in a perfume’s composition, it can be truly transportive.
“Citrus scents symbolise to me a new beginning and a freshness about life,” says Jo Malone – famed perfumer, and founder and creative director of Jo Loves. “When I wear citrus, it gives my mind clarity; it's like starting the day with a fresh canvas, allowing me to focus and think about the next adventure.”
Naturally inspiriting, “citrus fruits offer instant freshness, lifting the mood with their vibrant and sparkling qualities,” Elad Yifrach, L’Objet founder and creative director tells us. “They evoke a sense of brightness and freshness in multiple ways, from their vivid colour to their scent.”
Malone, who is somewhat synonymous with citrus fragrances (from Lime Basil & Mandarin which she created for Jo Malone London when at the brand’s helm, to Jo by Jo Loves–her own signature scent blending grapefruit, bitter orange and lime) enjoys exploring the accord in myriad ways. “I love clean, fresh, sharp scents with citrus notes such as pomelo, grapefruit, bergamot and mandarin as these notes are incredibly versatile,” she tells us. “They can be used in florals combined with other notes such as honeysuckle, adding femininity, while you can also make them masculine by adding fig and vetiver.” Indeed, not all citrus scents are sharp and piercing like the fruits themselves (though many of us like them that way). Many are soft, smooth and sophisticated, too.
