The DVD of David Lynch's 2001 mystery "Mulholland Drive" came with a mystery of its own. Those who know David Lynch know that he loathes talking about his movies, and staunchly refuses to answer bothersome questions about their meaning. This is the man who famously declared his 1977 classic "Eraserhead" to be his most spiritual film. When asked to elucidate, Lynch simply said "No." For Lynch, all the answers are up on the screen. Any commentary is not only redundant but distracting; why watch a movie looking for an interpretation when one can simply experience it raw? This is why Lynch has never provided a commentary track for any of his movies, and why he hates chapter stops on DVDs and Blu-rays. Sit in a dark room, he says, and let the film enter your mind unadulterated.
This is why the paper insert in the 2002 "Mulholland Drive" release is so baffling.

While many companies were affected by shortages brought on by Covid-19’s disruption, some may not be top of mind when it comes to everyday commerce. Enter filmmaker Lance Oppenheim, whose latest work Spermworld depicts the evolution of sperm banks. There’s been high interest from potential parents for receiving the male sperm, and the limited regulations of in-person sperm banks (e.g. donors can’t give their sperm to more than 25 or 30 families) have made donors run their business online. After contributing to the New York Times article The Sperm Kings Have a Problem: Too Much Demand, Oppenheim has now crafted a mind-boggling moving-image companion piece with backing from the outlet.
The documentary profiles a trio of primary leads: mechanic Tyree, Lyft driver Steve, and arithmetic professor Ari “the Sperminator” Nagel as they form different types of relationships and family trees during their exchanges. Steve hopes to make things...

The episode of Best Horror Movie You Never Saw covering Silent Night, Deadly Night 3 was Written by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Paul Bookstaber, Narrated by Kier Gomes, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Not everything in a given horror series has to be a stone cold classic. That being said, some series entries don’t get the fair shake they deserve. For example, there are some absolute bangers in the later entries of series like Puppet Master or Child’s Play that are overlooked thanks to entries in, say, Leprechaun or Hellraiser that would make you swear off sequels be it direct to video or not. Some series, like the focus of today’s entry, probably didn’t need or deserve sequels but that never stopped an executive from being greedy before. Silent Night, Deadly Night is an all time classic for a reason but what about its 4, yes,...

In 2003, Bob Dylan starred in Masked and Anonymous, a movie he wrote with screenwriter Larry Charles. The film featured multiple big-name stars and was the fruit of an extended collaboration between Dylan and Charles. When it came out, though, Dylan told his co-writer point-blank that he would not see the movie.
Bob Dylan did not want to see the movie ‘Masked and Anonymous’
Dylan and Charles initially began collaborating on a slapstick comedy series for HBO. While the network green-lit the show, Dylan immediately decided he didn’t want to go through with it. Instead, he and Charles began working on a film.
The end product was Masked and Anonymous, which stars Dylan as a musician who has recently left prison to put on a charity concert. His co-stars were Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Jessica Lange, Luke Wilson, Val Kilmer, and Penelope Cruz, among others. Dylan was excited about the film,...

In the 1990s, Seinfeld writer Larry Charles learned that his cousin was Bob Dylan’s manager. Eventually, this led to a meeting between Charles and Dylan and a feature film in 2003. Charles directed the film, Masked and Anonymous, and Dylan starred in it, but they worked closely together through the writing process. The film was an overall flop, but Charles said he enjoyed the process of writing with Dylan.
Bob Dylan teamed up with a ‘Seinfeld’ writer to write a movie
Once Dylan and Charles decided to partner up, they spent much of their time writing together. Charles was a writer on Seinfeld and Mad About You, so he had plenty of experience working on scripts. Dylan had primarily written songs at this point, but he enthusiastically threw himself into writing a screenplay.
“I spent a solid two years in a cubicle with him writing,” Charles told Uproxx in 2023. “I mean,...

In 2003, Bob Dylan starred in the film Masked and Anonymous with a number of Hollywood heavy hitters. His co-stars included Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Luke Wilson, Jessica Lange, Penelope Cruz, Val Kilmer, and many others. Dylan didn’t have nearly as much acting experience as his co-stars. While he had a leading role in the film, his inexperience caused some issues. Dylan seemed far more interested in watching his castmates than he was in giving a performance of his own.
Bob Dylan found his co-stars in a film riveting to watch
Masked and Anonymous had a stacked cast at least partly because the actors wanted a chance to work with Dylan.
“I think John [Goodman] really responded to the part, but a lot of the other people responded to just the idea of working with Bob,” director Larry Charles told Uproxx in 2023. “We were able to attract a lot of people because of that,...

In the early 2000s, Bob Dylan teamed up with writer Larry Charles to work on the screenplay for the film Masked and Anonymous. This was not the musician’s first movie. Still, this was the first time he worked on a screenplay in this way. Charles said he worked well with Dylan and that the script was the product of their equal collaboration. Charles noted that Dylan had been researching the Civil War at the time, so the historical era influenced the screenplay.
Bob Dylan took inspiration from the Civil War when he wrote a screenplay
When Charles and Dylan began working on Masked and Anonymous, Dylan pulled out a box of possible character names. He’d written them on scraps of paper with assorted words and phrases. In a similar manner to which Dylan writes songs, they began putting the scraps together to write a screenplay.

A new episode of the Revisited video series has just been released, and in this one we’re looking back at a movie that some may not consider to be a horror movie, but at the very least it is an “experimental psychological thriller” from a highly respected genre director. The director in question is David Lynch, and the movie we’re talking about today is the 2006 release Inland Empire (get it Here). To revisit Inland Empire with us, check out the video embedded above.
Written and directed by Lynch, Inland Empire tells the following story over the course of its 180 minute running time: Nikki, an actress, takes on a role in a new film, and because her husband is very jealous, her co-star Devon gets a warning not to make any romantic overtures — especially since the characters they play are having an affair. To date, there have been four notable live-action filmed renditions of the Marvel Comics character, the Punisher. The character, also known as Frank Castle, saw his family murdered by an overzealous and vengeful gangster, and soon thereafter became the world's most deadly vigilante. Imagine Batman with bloodthirst and guns, and you'll have a good idea of what the Punisher is all about.
It's worth mentioning right away that in recent years, the Punisher's skull logo has become a source of controversy. In about 2012, the skull began to be co-opted as a positive symbol of fascist violence. It was seen on the police cars during Black Lives Matter protests and adopted as a symbol of a "Blue Lives Matter" countermovement, used to support police brutality. Eventually, Marvel Comics had the Punisher confront some of his cop disciples, saying out loud that he is not a role model and that cops should hold themselves to higher standards.

As any home media hunters of a certain age know, securing a VHS copy of David Lynch's 1977 debut feature "Eraserhead" was a Herculean task. Cassettes were rare, and the ones the public could access were typically living in libraries or video stores who would not sell them to you. If you were willing to shell out 80 to 100, in 1992 dollars, then maybe you could cut a deal. Some resourceful collectors could scoop up a well-worn Japanese LaserDisc, but only the more extreme collectors owned LaserDisc players. "Eraserhead" was, for many years, effectively out of print.
After the release of "Mulholland Drive" in 2001, however, Lynch began examining new types of media as well as the ever-growing DVD market and decided that it was high time to keep up with an evolving landscape. In 2002, Lynch -- owning the rights to "Eraserhead" as well as his early short films -- remastered and released a pair of tiffany DVDs,...

Billy Herrera, a successful architect and the title character of the newest iteration of Father of the Bride, is played with terrific comic understatement by Andy Garcia. He has some of the gruffness of Spencer Tracy in the hit 1950 movie of the same name — the first screen translation of Edward Streeter’s novel — and none of the mugging that Steve Martin brought to the 1991 remake. But like both their characters, and pretty much every dad in every American comedy ever made, Billy needs enlightening about the way things are in the world today. When he says, “I came to this country with nothing,” which he does every chance he gets, his wife and daughters roll their eyes and wait for the moment of self-mythologizing grandeur to pass.
The shocking reality that kick-starts his awakening is news that his older daughter is getting married...

The wedding industrial complex has intensified since novelist Edward Streeter wrote his wryly observational satire “Father of the Bride” in 1949. So, too, has the titular patriarch’s panic that his daughter’s nuptials will expose him as a substandard provider. Director Gary Alazraki’s uneven adaptation — the third in seven decades after Spencer Tracy and Steve Martin reached for the migraine medication — casts Andy Garcia as the beleaguered patron whose ego outshines his child’s simpler desires. Audiences looking to shed a tear need not RSVP.
Garcia plays Billy Herrera, a Cuban exile — not immigrant, he stresses — who has built himself an upper-class life in Miami. Decades ago, he scaled the ladder of success from carpenter to architect. That struggle is the bedrock of his personality, and by the fifth time screenwriter Matt Lopez has him bring it up, Billy’s family looks ready to hit him with a hammer.

We might not have gotten a new David Lynch movie at Cannes this year, but we will still always have the rest of his incredible filmography. Among one of his best is "Mulholland Drive," the 2001 neo-noir that famously begins unraveling into a surrealist nightmare. The performances of frequent Lynch collaborators Naomi Watts and Laura Harring are arguably the reason why the movie has gained such high praise -- their chemistry, both platonic and romantic, along with the seamlessness of their third-act changes is just too good.

David Lynch never goes out of style. Ask any artist who’s worked with him, from Laura Dern to Patricia Arquette, they’ll tell you the Missoula native and Eagle Scout is a master filmmaker and an empathetic collaborator, with anyone he hires willing to follow his strange star down the rabbit hole together. And so, more than 20 years later, we’re still talking about movies like “Mulholland Drive.” While actresses like Dern, Naomi Watts, Grace Zabriskie, and Sheryl Lee are often thought of as Lynch’s muses, there’s one woman without whom the entire David Lynch universe wouldn’t be the same: Rebekah Del Rio.

Last October marked 20 years since David Lynch’s masterpiece “Mulholland Drive” first hit theaters, but in some circles, the celebration still hasn’t ended.
Film at Lincoln Center has announced a new 35mm presentation of the film, accompanied by a concert from singer-songwriter Rebekah Del Rio to commemorate the film’s belated anniversary. The screening will take place at the Walter Reade Theater in New York City on Wednesday, March 30, at 6:30 p.m.
“Mulholland Drive” is widely considered the high point of David Lynch’s later career (although some fans of “Twin Peaks: The Return” might disagree). It stars Naomi Watts as Betty Elms, an aspiring actress who moves to California with big Hollywood dreams. She soon encounters a woman with amnesia (played by Laura Harring), and the two quickly become entangled in an elaborate mystery. This one delivers the 4K ‘experience’ — and David Lynch’s mesmerizing visuals and Angelo Badalamenti’s seductive music once again pull us into a different dimension. Four or five viewings down the line, the ‘storyline’ of this TV show-become-feature film is if anything less understandable. But it’s no less pleasantly weird — we can’t keep our eyes off of Naomi Watts and Laura Harring. My ‘quality’ section debates a question I’m getting more often: are 4K discs worth the upgrade?

There are few films quite as beloved—or as baffling—as David Lynch’s “Mulholland Drive.”
After being praised as the best film of the 21st century in a BBC critics poll in 2016, “Mulholland Drive” took the top spot on the “Best of the Decade” lists from Film Comment, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (Lafca), Reverse Shot, and IndieWire. Now, ahead of its 20th anniversary on Oct. 19, it’s time to uncover many of the mysteries behind the haunting 2001 film.
The plot seems simple enough: a young woman, played by Laura Harring, has amnesia following a car crash in the Hollywood Hills. Naomi Watts is her naive roommate, an aspiring actress. But that premise — just like the vehicle careening off the twisting, paved Mulholland Drive — eventually falls by the wayside, giving way to a debate over gender identity, the porous nature of reality, and the personal ramifications of fame.

20 years after the film’s world premiere at Cannes in 2001, the restoration, supervised by Lynch himself, premiered at the Cannes Classics selection earlier this year. In 2001, Lynch won best director at Cannes, an award he shared with Joel Coen for “The Man Who Wasn’t There.”
The film will be released on home entertainment, formats including a 4K Uhd limited collector’s edition with a new artwork by Krzysztof Domaradzki rolling out across Studiocanal’s territories in November, with additional theatrical releases planned in France and Germany.
“Mulholland Drive” stars Naomi Watts (“The Impossible”) in her breakthrough double-role as well as Laura Harring (“Love in the Time of Cholera”), Justin Theroux (“The Girl On The Train”) and Melissa George (“Hunted”).

The cinema of David Lynch is a Pandora’s box of desires and beguiling images. Forged through his first feature Eraserhead, the stark black and white images of the feature merge with the ominous sound design to create an enchantingly nightmarish tone – one that Lynch has come to be defined by. The filmmaker’s work outside the medium in sculpting, literature and music too suffices itself into his films as rich tapestries of complex human emotions and abstract expressions.
Throughout Lynch’s filmography there are highly surreal moments that transcend simply being defined in the horror or thriller genre. These scenes and images rest more specifically in the surrealist movement of the 1920s, later conjured into cinema by Louis Buñuel’s Un chien andalou. Like the intoxicating images of the surrealist artists, Lynch’s cinema is continuously exploring the connections that define human interaction and feeling. Whether it is the...

Before Netflix brought Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle to the digital streaming masses, there was Ray Stevenson. Before Stevenson there was Thomas Jane, and well before that, there was Dolph Lundgren, but I digress. Marvel’s most brutal character, The Punisher, has been beloved by fans ever since dawning the white boots on the cover of Amazing Spider-Man #129. The character has had a few cinematic adaptations over the years and two of them are receiving a 4K Ultra HD combo pack release from Lionsgate.

Arriving on DVD tomorrow is the remake of Inside from director Miguel Ángel Vivas and co-writers Jaume Balagueró and Manu Díez. Based on the original 2007 film by Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, this iteration of Inside follows a bereaved expectant mother named Sarah (Rachel Nichols) who is being tormented by an unknown woman (Laura Harring) who will stop at nothing to get her hands on Sarah’s unborn child.
Daily Dead recently conducted a Q&A with Vivas about Inside, and he discussed what initially drew him into the project, his positive experiences working with his strong female leads, the film’s ambitious finale, and more.
What was it about this project in particular that you connected with as a storyteller and made you want to take it on as a directorial project?

For roughly the first third of 2018’s Inside, I felt sympathetic towards a remake whose original “equal” is highly regarded amongst genre crowds. Yet as plot similarities fade, freedoms from comparative shackles prove themselves to be rather trivial and unaffecting. From the director of Kidnapped (a thriller I dig) and the co-writer of [Rec] (an outbreak nightmare I adore) comes a head-scratching tale of coincidental deaths on par with neither of their previously taught accolades. Points awarded for deviating from Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury’s brutalization so noticeably, but lordy, this is some serious “scream at the screen” kind of frustration at times.
Rachel Nichols stars as Sarah Clark, a pregnant widow trying to cope with a recent car accident that took her husband’s life. On this particular night during the Christmas holiday season, she goes to bed knowing her mother is en route and neighbors are keeping watch...

"You'll have to come out sooner or later..." Vertical Entertainment has premiered a new trailer for a horror thriller titled Inside, a remake of the original French film of the same name by Alexandre Bustillo & Julien Maury. This new version is made by a Spanish filmmaker, but it's actually entirely in English and thus is more of a "Hollywood" remake, though it wasn't made in Hollywood at all. Inside stars Rachel Nichols as a pregnant woman who moves alone into a new home. She recently lost her partner in a car crash that left her partially deaf. She's stalked by a stranger who is obsessed with her unborn child. The full cast includes Laura Harring, Stany Coppet, Andrea Tivadar, and David Chevers. So this looks exactly like you'd expect, more horror landing in January if you're interested. Never underestimate a mother's protective fury! Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Miguel Ángel Vivas' Inside,...

Much has been made about the dearth of strong female roles in contemporary cinema, and the problematic depictions of women in many recent movies, but the past two decades have provided plenty of counterexamples. While the onus is on writers and directors to craft strong female characters, the actresses themselves bring these figures to life, and they’re often the main reason we keep being drawn back to these works.
In no particular order, our favorite — and we’d like to think the best — female performances of the 21st century.
Isabelle Huppert, “Elle”
Paul Verhoeven’s “Elle” begins with a laugh that catches in your throat: A wide-eyed cat looks off-screen to the screams of a man and woman in apparent orgiastic bliss. Then comes the cutaway, which reveals a far more nefarious incident: Middle-aged Michéle (Isabelle Huppert), in the process of getting raped by a masked assailant on the floor of her home.

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. It's worth quoting the latest (perhaps the last?) gnomic pronouncements from Margaret "The Log Lady" Lanterman (the late Catherine E. Coulson), speaking via phone to Deputy Sheriff Tommy "Hawk" Hill (Michael Horse), in full: "Hawk—electricity is humming. You hear it in the mountains and rivers. You see it dance among the seas and stars. And glowing around the moon. But in these days, the glow is dying. What will be in the darkness that remains? The Truman brothers are both true men. They are your brothers. And the others, the good ones, who have been with you. Now the circle is almost complete. Watch and listen to the dream of time and space. It all comes out now, flowing like a river. That which is and is not.

Stars: Naomi Watts, Laura Harring, Justin Theroux, Ann Miller | Written and Directed by David Lynch
Re-released to coincide with the new Twin Peaks series, it’s apt that Mulholland Drive was originally conceived as a TV pilot. Perhaps it’s for the best it ended up in (relatively) short form. The film, weighing in at 2.5 hours, is an epic mind-bender on its own terms, and there’s barely a wasted frame.
It begins with a car accident on Mulholland Drive. A woman, who will become known as Rita (Laura Harring), survives with a knock to the head. She stumbles away and hides in an empty house. The house belongs to Aunt Ruth, whose niece Betty (Naomi Watts) arrives the next day. She’s come to L.A. with the dream of an acting career. Rita and Betty become friends. But Rita can’t remember anything – not even her real name...

Recently voted as the best film of the 21st Century in a BBC Culture poll, David Lynch’s neo-noir classic Mulholland Drive (2001) is being re-released on Blu-ray and DVD 22nd May 2017, with a brand new director-approved restoration. To celebrate we have 3 copies on Blu-ray to giveaway.
Beautiful, bizarre and strangely addictive, the film begins as a botched hit results in the meeting of brunette amnesiac Rita (Laura Harring) and blonde would-be Hollywood actress Betty (Naomi Watts). Taking the viewer on a memorable neo-noir trip through Hollywood’s dark underbelly, Lynch dispenses with a conventional narrative in favour of a hallucinogenic assault on the senses that will stay with you long after the credits roll.
With Twin Peaks making a return this year, now is a good time to immerse yourself in the past works of Lynch and there is no better place to start than this masterpiece of cinema.
