Vince Vaughn is convinced studios want to “overthink” comedies nowadays, especially ones without an IP to fall back on.
The actor — who has appeared in iconic original films such as “Wedding Crashers,” “Old School,” and “Swingers” — explained why there is a lack of modern R-rated comedies in theaters.
“[Studios] just overthink it,” Vaughn said during First We Feast’s “Hot Ones” series. “And it’s like, it’s crazy, you get these rules, like, if you did geometry, and you said 87 degrees was a right angle, then all your answers are messed up, instead of 90 degrees. So there became some idea or concept, like, they would say something like, ‘You have to have an IP.'”
He continued, “The people in charge don’t want to get fired more so than they’re looking to do something great, so they want to kind of follow a set of rules that somehow get set in stone,...

The Children, Eleanor!
We’ve spent the month of July discussing the badass babes of Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror (listen), the queer undertones of Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut (listen), and the “very bad weather” of Jan de Bont‘s 1996 tornado film, Twister (listen).
Now we’re wrapping up our de Bont double bill with his less successful 1999 special effects remake, The Haunting!
In the film, sheltered Eleanor (Lili Taylor) is recruited for a dubious insomnia study at the infamous Hill House by questionable doctor David Marrow (Liam Neeson). Along with bisexual Theo (Catherine Zeta-Taylor) and horny Luke (Owen Wilson), Nell is terrorized by annoying ghost children and the monstrous owner of the house, Hugh Crain (Charles Gunning).
As the spectral hauntings become more and more severe, Nell must uncover her tenuous connection to the previous victims before the terrible CGI swallows her and the other participants whole.

Spoilers for "Deadpool & Wolverine" follow.
"Deadpool & Wolverine" builds on the Disney+ series "Loki," incorporating multiversal watchdogs the Tva (Time Variance Authority) and sending its heroes into the Void, a wasteland where those from "pruned" timelines go for final disposal.
The ruler of the Void is Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin), mutant super-villainess and evil twin of Professor X, but she's only one half of the movie's big bads. The other is rogue Tva agent Mr. Paradox (Matthew Macfadyen), who wants to destroy Wade Wilson's (Ryan Reynolds) timeline because he can't be bothered with monitoring it.
Macfadyen plays Paradox like he did Tom Wambsgans on "Succession," though this time with his natural British accent. Paradox definitely seems like a chap who'd use a Tva agent or two as a human footstool. He's a soulless middle manager who smiles while crushing others, but in the end his ambition exceeds his competence,...

The Time Variance Authority is the rule of temporal law in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and they have a big role to play in “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
The Tva is an organization that exists outside of time and space and has charged itself with maintaining the Sacred Timeline in the MCU and “pruning” branches that could create an alternate timeline. The bureaucratic time cops have exclusively appeared in Seasons 1 and 2 of “Loki” but are making the jump to MCU films with “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
Here’s what you need to know about the Tva’s creation and history leading up to their latest appearance.

Long before the creation of the Time Variance Authority, a 31st-century variant of He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors) named Nathaniel Richards discovered the existence of other timelines and universes. At the same time, variants of this variant were also learning about the Multiverse...

Since the very first trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine, MCU fans have been curious about the role of a unique agency. The Time Variance Authority, or Tva, was introduced in Loki as the multiverse police. The group, with agents depicted by Owen Wilson and Wunmi Mosaku, became the centerpiece of Loki and allowed for some incredible storytelling opportunities. With the Tva arriving on the big screen in earnest, we’re breaking down what you need to know about the group.
The Tva at the End of Loki
Throughout Loki, the Tva served as a delivery vehicle for Kang-related storytelling. In Season 1, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) faced off against “He Who Remains” (Jonathan Majors). That Kang variant set up the multiverse in a way that destroyed all of existence with his death.
The results of that plan come to fruition in Season 2. Loki eventually sacrifices his...

On the heels of yesterday's final trailer, Marvel Studios has released another TV spot for Deadpool and Wolverine, and while this one doesn't feature any big reveals, it does include quite a bit of new footage.
The promo spotlights more banter between Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) and Logan (Hugh Jackman), a shot of Dogpool leaping into The Merc With a Mouth's arms, and more. Right at the end, we also get an extended look at Deadpool in the Tva as he teases one of the agents about having a crush on him.
Spoilers ahead.
Speaking of the Tva, there is another TV spot doing the rounds (it was briefly online before the video was deleted) which confirms a recent rumor that Loki's Hunter B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku) will appear in the movie. This may add credence to reports that Owen Wilson's Mobius will also have a role.

Exclusive: Owen Wilson is to play Yeti hunter Tom Slick in a new scripted podcast that also stars the voice talent of Sissy Spacek and Schuyler Fisk.
The trio star in Tom Slick: Mystery Hunter, which comes from School of Humans and iHeartPodcasts.
The eight-part series, which launches on July 18, is based on the untold, mostly true tale of explorer, scientific legend and alleged spy, Tom Slick. It will chronicle the larger than life adventures of Slick in his steadfast pursuit of the unknown, culminating to his greatest and most mystifying expedition: his 1958 hunt for the Yeti.
Slick was a real person, an oil heir turned adventurer who went searching for the Yeti, Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster.
Slick’s story will be told through hidden tapes found by his granddaughter, Liv Slick (Fisk) buried in her mother, Claire Slick’s (Spacek) attic. As they listen together, they will...

Horror was in a bit of a funk in the late 90s. Then 25 years ago, in July 1999, The Blair Witch Project came along and changed everything.
In a 1996 article published in The Philadelphia Enquirer, film critic Desmond Ryan bemoaned the state of mainstream films. Citing such films as Independence Day, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Eraser, and that year’s hurricane thrillride Twister, Ryan argued that Hollywood had become more interested in special effects than logic or character.
“It all began,” Ryan wrote, “when Twister’s killer tornadoes sucked up everything in their path – tractors, cows, common sense, continuity, plausibility, and the quaint notion that movies should have characters you care about.”
By the end of the 1990s, the horror genre appeared to have descended into a creative funk of its own. Of the horror films released toward the end of the decade, many of the most high-profile examples were remakes or sequels in somewhat tired franchises.

Before Ayo Edebiri broke out in “The Bear” and “Bottoms” or even as a voice on “Big Mouth,” she was a huge Letterboxd influencer, offering a mix of hilarious and thoughtful commentary on a wide range of cinema. She has largely tempered her posting, still contributing a brief review from time to time, but is now returning to the film criticism forum with some recent Criterion Closet picks.
“I be on these sales. I’m on these sales. I’m getting 50 percent off these DVDs just like you are, so I’m very excited to be here,” Edebiri said as she scoured shelf upon shelf of classic cinema.
Edebiri’s first pick was Akira Kurasawa’s pulpy crime drama and the inspiration for Spike Lee and Denzel Washington’s latest collaboration, “High & Low.” Discussing the film, Edebiri said, “I’ve been seeing this popping off Letterboxd, which I think...

Exclusive: Lilli Kay is set as a lead opposite Owen Wilson and Peter Dager in Apple TV+’s 10-episode comedy created, written by and executive produced by Jason Keller.
The untitled comedy stars Wilson as Pryce Cahill, an over-the-hill, ex-pro golfer whose career was derailed prematurely 20 years ago. After he gets fired from his job at an Indiana sporting goods store and his wife walks out on him, Pryce hedges his bets entirely on a troubled 17-year-old golf phenom, played by Dager.
Kay will play Zero, a 19-year old, Gen-z social justice warrior who joins Pryce Cahill (Wilson) on the road as he shepherds a young phenom (Dager) through the world of competitive golf.
In addition to Wilson and Dager, Kay joins previously announced cast Marc Maron, Mariana Treviño and Jamie Neumann.
The Apple Studios production will be directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris and executive produced by Propagate’s Ben Silverman, Howard T. Owens and Rodney Ferrell, Entertainment 360’s Guymon Casady, Piece of Work’s Lee Eisenberg and Natalie Sandy, Chris Moynihan, Keller, Wilson as well as Bill Callahan.
Kay most recently starred as Fia Baxter opposite Brian Cranston and Michael Stuhlbarg in Showtime drama series Your Honor. She recurs as Clara Brewer in Yellowstone, which is heading into its final season. On the film side, Kay was most recently seen in Rustin opposite Colman Domingo, Chris Rock and Jeffrey Wright and will next be seen in indie feature Press Your Luck opposite Paul Walter Hauser. Kay is repped by Gersh, Authentic Talent & Literary Management, and Bloch Law.

When my younger brother was growing up, he went through an extreme car phase. We're talking collecting Micro Machines of every variety and cruising around in an electric kids Ride-On Jeep. What I'm saying is, when Pixar's "Cars" films proved hugely popular with younger Millennials and the first wave of Gen Z-ers starting in the '00s, I understood why. I was there, Gandalf.
Out of all of the animation powerhouse's franchises, "Cars" has always been the most contentious. The "Cars" universe itself makes no sense, which has spawned all manner of dark fan theories, including that these movies take place in a post-apocalyptic future where cars gained sentience Skynet-style and murdered all the humans. Also, the personalities of the vehicles tend to be based on broad cultural or ethnic stereotypes associated with their models. Meanwhile, their personal interests are primarily limited to racing because, again, they're all cars,...

The release of Andrew McCarthy’s Hulu documentary ‘Brats’ has sparked renewed interest in the Brat Pack—that group of young actors who starred in several iconic teen movies of the 1980s, like 'Pretty in Pink,' 'Sixteen Candles,' and 'The Breakfast Club.'
Those films often featured different configurations of Brat Pack members on screen—like Ally Sheedy, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, and Molly Ringwald—creating a web of connections between the actors. To visualize these relationships, one passionate fan has used IMDb data to create a diagram of the Brat Pack’s movie connections. Taking it a step further, the interactive visualization also connects the Brat Pack with two other groups of actors: the Rat Pack of the 1960s (Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, and others), and the Frat Pack of the 1990s (Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller, and more comedic actors).
As part of its partnership with analytics platform Tableau, IMDb is sharing a huge movie dataset, allowing Tableau users to explore, create, and share data visualizations and infographics. In his visualization “Packs,” Zach Bowders has displayed the films of all three groups of actors to show their connections within their respective Packs, and how they connect to the other cohorts. According to Bowders, “Molly Ringwald is the key to everything.” Did you know she starred in films with members of both the Rat Pack (Joey Bishop in ‘Betsy’s Wedding’) and the Frat Pack (Ben Stiller in ‘Fresh Horses’)?

We all know Wes Anderson has his repertoire of actors: Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Owen Wilson, and on and on and on. And over the course of his career, they have all grown accustomed to – and perfectly fit – his signature style. But that’s really hard to do early on, when none of this has been established and you’re just trying to get that first film completed. Now imagine doing it while a sometimes short-tempered Oscar nominee watches it all unfold.
Wes Anderson recalled that when making his first movie, James Caan didn’t understand just what this rinky-dink, $5 million production was even going for. “I remember James Caan came to the set of Bottle Rocket, and he was really saying, ‘What are you guys doing?’ We were doing things that he thought, ‘This is not how movies are made,’ but he sort of adapted to us.”

Succession is gone and that will make a lot of these other Outstanding Drama Series contenders breathe a little easier this year.
Despite that Emmy juggernaut now being out of the way, the category nevertheless is offering up a lot of intrigue, giving Deadline Executive Editor and Chief TV Critic Dominic Patten and Deadline Awards Columnist and Chief Film Critic Pete Hammond a lot to chew on in this week’s TV Talk podcast.
Especially chewy is the last-minute maneuver by FX to announce two more seasons of Shōgun, what was thought to be a limited series; as all the speculation started boiling up, the network confirmed the series would instead be submitted to the Emmys as a Drama Series. There can be no doubt that...

Fresh off his recent Oscar win, Wes Anderson made his first-ever visit to the Annecy Animation Festival, where he reminisced about his past while also sharing a bit about the shoot for his next feature.
Anderson took part in a conversation Wednesday aimed at giving animation students insight into his upbringing, influences and pre-Hollywood projects. The event began with a montage of animated moments from his movies, leading the filmmaker to note that he didn’t realize he had dabbled so extensively in animation and that he didn’t even have a clear memory of some of those clips from his own work.
During the session, Anderson was asked about the importance of family in his career, given that he has worked with brother Eric Anderson and is also known for collaborating multiple times with various members of his films’ cast and crew. This led him to discuss the process of making his next movie,...

It didn’t take long for a scene from a 2000s comedy to turn into Owen Wilson’s iconic meme after the clip resurfaced and made rounds on social media. The words “Excuse me bruh” were practically plastered across everyone’s lips as the meme went viral.

Tom Hiddleston had a great time on the set of the Disney+ series Loki and revealed that he got to work with an amazing crew. Emotionally, Hiddleston is still not over his character as the Greek God of Mischief, but the conclusion of Loki was sort of a significant ending for him. He revealed that the director of the series, Aaron Moorhead, gave him an idea to bring out his best performance in his final scenes.
Tom Hiddleston as the titular character in Loki Season 2 | Disney+
Hiddleston went through his work over the last 15 years, majorly comprising his MCU roles. Moorhead wanted the Thor actor to carry it with him when he stepped in to film his last scene. If you thought "Loki" season 2 was confusing, you're not alone: the cast of the Marvel show probably did too, thanks to some purposeful misdirection – or, as executive producer Kevin Wright explained it to Marvel.com, outright lying – that went on behind the scenes during a key moment in production.
The lies in question related to episode 4 of the show's second season, a complicated, climactic chapter that features several key power changes and plenty of mortal peril. In it, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) "prunes" a version of himself from the past, and Brad Wolfe (Rafael Casal) is compelled to prune Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), too. The episode ends with the group of timeline-hoppers trying to enact their master plan to save the universe: Victor Timely (Jonathan Majors) steps outside of the Tva's headquarters, attempting to fix the out-of-control Temporal Loom that's threatening to destabilize. Only, it doesn't work: Timely explodes into ribbons of spaghetti-like material,...

When Loki debuted in 2021, fans were introduced to Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), the variant whose exploits lead the God of Mischief (Tom Hiddleston) deeper into the depths of the Time Variance Authority (Tva) and the conspiracy behind its ruler. As Season 1 unfolded, Sylvie sought to unleash free will, eliminating the forces that tear variants away from their timelines and loved ones as she had been when she was a child. When viewers pick back up with Sylvie in Season 2, she’s doing her best to move on, but even time and a new life set in 1980s Oklahoma isn’t enough to help her escape the past. When Loki and Mobius (Owen Wilson) come crashing back into her life, Sylvie finds herself compelled to help them solve the Tva’s meltdown, which was seemingly sparked by her killing of He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors) in Season 1. Ultimately, by the end,...

Hollywood is bursting with "what if" scenarios -- "Sliding Doors" moments where actors, writers, directors, and craftspeople almost made a certain project, or almost walked away from a job that would become huge for their careers. With the benefit of hindsight, these situations are often fun to think about -- especially if, as in the case in today's example, A) the two people competing for a part were vying for a memorable role in a well-known movie, and B) they both went on to have great careers, so the thought exercise doesn't feel mean-spirited or just plain sad.

In spite of almost two decades having passed since the release of the first episode, The Office’s legacy still lives on in the hearts of its fans. One of their most favorite onscreen employees, the charming receptionist Pam Beesly steals the whole romantic line of the sitcom. However, the Pam actress, Jenna Fischer, seems to stay out of the spotlight now.
It may come as a surprise, but over the course of 11 years that have passed since The Office’s conclusion, Fischer has made a number of far cries from the role which made her a star, with some of the projects with our favorite Pam actress being enlisted below.
Her first post-Office role was the one in Owen Wilson and Zach Galifianakis’ dramedy titled Are You Here (2013). This movie was received quite poorly, and the critics were sure it was a shameful waste of the actors’ talents, including Fischer’s comedy potential.

Loki: Hot Toys Unveils "God Loki" Figure, Offering Detailed Look At New Costume From Season 2 Finale
In the closing moments of Loki's season 2 finale, the God of Mischief destroyed the Temporal Loom and created a new, endless Multiverse which he sits at the centre of.
We're sure "God Loki" will eventually return, particularly with Kang gearing up to embark on a Multiversal War and Incursions destroying many of these new realities. While powering up to replace the Loom, Loki's costume underwent a startling transformation, and our best look yet at that comes in the form of a new 1/6th scale Hot Toys action figure.
Two versions will be available; a limited edition with rooted hair, and another with a traditional head sculpt.
"Exquisitely crafted based on the screen appearance of Tom Hiddleston as God Loki in the finale, the figure features a newly developed head sculpt with separate rolling eyeballs," reads the official product description. "The fabric costume has been finely tailored to match Loki's on-screen appearance,...

The first season of “Loki” was the most popular of all the Marvel series to premiere on Disney+, and for good reason: The imaginative world of the Time Variance Authority (Tva) and the core relationships established within it — most notably the warm and hilarious partnership between Tom Hiddleston’s title character and Tva functionary Mobius M. Mobius (Owen Wilson) — yielded one of the liveliest and most involving Marvel screen stories since the original “Iron Man.” But as impressive as Season 1 was, it was only a warm-up for the more ambitious, suspenseful, and poignant Season 2, in which Loki finally fulfills a destiny set up for him 13 years ago in the movie “Thor” — though in a way that neither he nor the audience could possibly have predicted.

A group of demonstrators was seen zip-tied and being moved by authorities from a UCLA parking garage to an Lacpd bus. The number of protester arrests was 43, according to local news reports Ktla, with those taken into custody on suspicion of conspiracy to commit burglary and released after they were processed; all classes have now been moved to remote.

In 2014, Wes Ball made his directorial debut with the dystopian science fiction film The Maze Runner which is based on James Dashner’s novel of the same name. The filmmaker subsequently went on to direct two more films in the franchise which follows the story of a teenager who is thrown into an intricate maze and must find his way out of it.

The central protagonist in the films was played by Dylan O’Brien who impressed with his performance in the trilogy. But the young actor who aptly developed the nuances of his character through the narratives, was initially not considered the perfect choice by Ball owing to a certain preconceived notion that he had of him.

With major franchises such as Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar under its roof, Disney typically finds itself on the top of the box-office heap, but that wasn’t the case last year. The company had more than a few failures which found its fortunes falling, and Deadline reports that four of the five biggest box-office bombs of 2023 belonged to Disney.
First up, and least surprising, is The Marvels, the Captain Marvel sequel starring Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, and Teyonah Parris. As its predecessor grossed $1.1 billion, it was hoped that the sequel would equal that number, but the film turned out to be a bomb of epic proportions, grossing just $206 million worldwide. The film reportedly found Disney taking a loss of $237 million. Yikes.

Owen Wilson may have been in the MCU ever since he joined Loki led by Tom Hiddleston back in 2021, but the actor recently got an offer that most of the Marvel’s stars can’t boast of.
Seemingly a one-in-a-million opportunity that would make him a fortune, the offer was nonetheless quick to be shut down — and the problem here lies in the upcoming movie’s very controversial storyline.
Apart from being one of Hollywood’s biggest actors with a lot of acclaimed works under his belt, Owen Wilson, to his fans’ pure delight, also appears to be a man of his word with solid morality.
As director Joshua Newton has recently revealed, Wilson turned down his generous offer of $12 million to star in Newton’s upcoming crime thriller The Juice. The film will presumably tell the truth about O.J. Simpson’s scandalous arrest following his wife Nicole Brown Simpson’s murder.

A few years ago, filmmakers Emma Schwartz and Mary Robertson remember taking note of video compilations from old Dan Schneider series that showed children and young teens “enacting scenes that are arguably sexual in nature.”
“One example you see Ariana Grande squeezing a potato, or Ariana Grande — who was then a young teenager — pouring water on her chest and face,” Robertson recalls during a panel at Deadline’s Contenders TV: Documentary + Unscripted event. “And you see Jamie Lynn Spears receiving this squirt of a viscous liquid on her face. And there were many on social media who were asking, ‘Did I grow up watching these clips?’ “
Their shock over what they found on social media, together with a story about ’90s kids TV in Business Insider, is what prompted the creation of Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV. The Investigation Discovery docuseries set out to uncover the...

After winning the Emmy earlier this year for the final season of Trevor Noah’s hosting stint, The Daily Show surprised just about everyone with the announcement that its multiple Emmy-winning previous star Jon Stewart would be returning to host Monday editions during this election year, while other regulars would take turns hosting during the rest of the week.
The multi-host format was born out of necessity following Noah’s departure and a series of what were essentially auditions for a permanent replacement. Unable to land on the perfect choice, producers and Comedy Central settled on Stewart returning and spreading the wealth host-wise to carry the series through this election year.
Ratings are up. It’s working.
Discussing the evolution at Deadline’s Contenders TV: Documentary + Unscripted event were longtime executive producer/showrunner/writer Jen Flanz, co-executive producer/writer Zhubin Parang, and former writer and newly named correspondent Josh Johnson.

Casting for Netflix’s reality competition series Squid Game: The Challenge was a unique challenge: finding 456 diverse and international lead characters.
Casting director Erika Dobrin described the gargantuan task by saying, “I don’t think that’s ever quite been done before on the scale it was done here.”
The Netflix series, based on the streaming’s mega-hit Korean survival drama Squid Game, saw 456 contestants compete for a massive $4.56 million prize through a series of challenges. These ranged from the infamous “Red Light Green Light” from the 2021 drama, in which contestants had to avoid moving while in the eyeline of a horrifying giant doll, to new ones based on children’s games such as Battleship.

Can you tell who has a “good” voice and who has a “bad” voice just by looking someone in the face who is lip-syncing to a song? This is the question posed to participants weekly on the Fox game show I Can See Your Voice, hosted and created by Ken Jeong.
“The whole show is predicated on, is this a ‘good’ singer or a ‘bad’ singer without ever hearing them actually hearing them sing,” Jeong tells Deadline during a panel at its Contenders Television: Documentary + Unscripted awards-season event. “We use visual clues, lip-sync clues, and like detective kind of clues. At the end of the day, the contestant has an opportunity to win life-changing money by determining if the final secret voice is good or bad. And if it is good, then they can win up to $100,000. It’s really just feel-good television at its best.”
