Donald Glover and Maya Erskine aren’t returning for season 2 of Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith?! What? Is this some sort of contract negotiation standoff? Even after the series’ 16 Emmy nominations including Lead Actor and Lead Actress in a drama?
Hardly, according to co-Creator and EP Francesca Sloane and the show’s director and EP Hiro Murai.
“We’re just trying to make the best version of season 2 possible,” Sloane tells Crew Call, “That’s why we’re being so coy about it.” That is whether Glover and Erskine are really not returning.

“It is a good representation for a number of reasons. First of all, [director] Hiro Murai did this amazing job of establishing this very unique tone and also this very unique tempo. It has this slow burn quality and then it all of a sudden explodes,” reveals Emmy-nominated “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” composer David Fleming about his nomination for the series premiere “First Date.” For our recent webchat he adds, “It was really my first thing to touch and I was trying to define the musical world in that first episode; the themes and the sound and I think there were a lot of ways one could go with a show that’s fresh. For better or for worse, the choices that I made, I feel like really took root in that first episode.” We talked with Fleming as part of Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a event with 2024 Emmy nominees.

Prime Video’s freshman spy series Mr. & Mrs. Smith is coming out of the gate with 16 Emmy nominations including Best Drama Actor and Actress for leads Donald Glover and Maya Erskine and the main event, Best Drama Series.
In a reimagination of the 2005 film that starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, co-creators Glover and showrunner Francesca Sloane — who are Emmy-nominated for Best Writing for a Drama Series — wanted the show to be its own thing and not a copy of anything else.
Sloane was joined by director and executive producer Hiro Murai, casting director Carmen Cuba and composer David Fleming for Deadline’s Contenders TV: The Nominees on Saturday.
“People keep saying that I coined this — this should go on record that Hiro coined this,” Sloane said. “Our season of Smiths are these C-minus students in an AP course. I think that sort of travels through the entire season as opposed to the film,...

With the “Fallout” TV adaptation and Donald Glover and Maya Erskine’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” both landing Emmy noms in the drama category Wednesday, Amazon MGM Studios chief Jennifer Salke and head of TV Vernon Sanders are celebrating Amazon’s unprecedented position of having two shows in the running for this year’s top prize.
Salke and Sanders spoke with Variety after the dust had settled to break down the 62 overall nominations received by Amazon and MGM Studios — including 17 for “Fallout,” 16 for “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” and a nod for TV movie for the LGBTQ rom-com “Red, White & Royal Blue,” among the studio’s other noms.
On the heels of the Emmys love for HBO’s “The Last of Us,” were you expecting “Fallout” to be able to achieve similar results or still cautious about the awards reaction to video game adaptations and genre TV?

Childish Gambino has unveiled his new song, “Lithonia,” the first single from his new album, Bando Stone & The New World, which is set for release on July 19th via RCA Records. The album doubles as the soundtrack to his upcoming film of the same name.
The multi-hyphenate talent is pulling triple duty for the upcoming movie event — in addition to developing the soundtrack, he stars in the film under his given name Donald Glover. If that wasn’t enough responsibility, he also directed Bando Stone, working off a script written by Evi Wilder (possibly a pseudonym).

While the movie is still waiting on a release date, a trailer arrived earlier this week, teasing a minimalist, apocalyptic storyline set on a tropical island. The Bear Season 3 is off to a roaring start. The premiere episode drew 5.4 million views globally on Hulu, Hulu on Disney+ and Disney+ in certain territories internationally, in its first four days of streaming, according to Disney. A view is defined as total stream time divided by runtime.
The debut episode, which aired last week, was the No. 3 most-watched season premiere ever, Disney says, as well as the No. 1 most watched FX season premiere ever and the No. 1 most-watched scripted series premiere ever.
Additionally, Season 3 continues to see an increase of 24% more views after four days compared to Season 2, according to Disney. Season 3 saw a significant boost from Hulu on Disney+ viewing and is the most viewed Hulu on Disney+ premiere since launch.
Season 3 will follow Carmy, Richie and Sydney as they work to elevate the titular restaurant, which transformed from a gritty sandwich shop to a finer dining destination.

The Bear is eating for Hulu.
The Disney-owned streamer says the third season premiere of the Emmy winner racked up 5.4 million views worldwide over its first four days of release (it premiered June 27). The show streams on Disney+ outside the United States and hasn’t premiered in every territory yet.
That 5.4 million figure — the equivalent of that many complete showings of the 36-minute season premiere — represents a 24 percent jump over the season two opener in June 2023 (which would put the latter around 4.35 million views) and the show’s biggest episode over a four-day span to date. It also snagged the largest view tally ever on Hulu for an FX season premiere, or a scripted season debut from any source. The Bear now ranks third among all original season premieres on Hulu, according to the streamer’s internal figures.

The Season 3 premiere of “The Bear” reached 5.4 million views in its first four days of streaming, according to Disney.
That marks not only the best performance ever for an FX premiere on Hulu, but the most-watched season premiere for any scripted series on Hulu. With unscripted series included, “The Bear” Season 3 is Hulu’s third-biggest season premiere of all time. (Note: a view is calculated by dividing the total time a title was watched by its runtime.)
Additionally, Disney says this puts Season 3 of “The Bear” at 24% more views than the Season 2 premiere achieved in the same amount of time. That’s a second consecutive season of growth for “The Bear,” which reached surprise word-of-mouth success in Season 1 and grew in viewership by 70% with Season 2.

Hungry fans, rejoice; “The Bear” Season 3 will premiere on June 26 at 9 p.m. Eastern, three hours before its scheduled midnight release. The news was announced at the show’s press conference on June 24, with the cast gathered in-person to answer questions about the Emmy-winning series.
The conference panel consisted of Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Abby Elliot, Matty Matheson, Lionel Boyce, Liza Colón-Zayas, and Ricky Staffieri. One of the first questions directed at White and Edebiri was if their characters’ relationship contains romantic undertones, to which they replied simply, and with no further comment: “No.”
The conversation ranged from inspirations the shows draws from Chicago to individual character arcs and the ongoing presence of grief in the series, which began just after Mikey’s death (Jon Bernthal). On June 6, the 2024 IndieWire Honors ceremony celebrated 13 creators and stars responsible for some of the most stellar work of the TV season. Curated and selected by IndieWire’s editorial team, the event was a new edition of previous IndieWire Honors ceremonies, this time focused entirely on television. We showcased their work with new interviews leading up to the Los Angeles celebration.
Inspired by the popular 2005 film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Amazon Prime’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” series had a lot going for it: Stars Maya Erskine and Donald Glover both came off extremely popular series (“Pen15” and “Atlanta”), guest stars included John Turturro, Parker Posey, Ron Perlman, Michaela Coel, and many others, and they shot on location in New York City and Italy. It’s been the case from Paul Thomas Anderson to Hiro Murai, but some of the best, and IndieWire’s favorite, filmmakers come out of making music videos. The short space and heightened expression of music videos allow for the kind of scrappy innovation, formal experimentation, and energetic construction that isn’t often allowed to exist in other visual forms. There’s maybe only one group of people in the world with more unbridled creativity, ready to push visual storytelling into places none of us have imagined yet: Kids.
Luckily, there’s a place where, for over a decade, music video makers — including The Daniels, Hiro Murai, Sandy Honig, Demi Adejuyigbe, and many others — have teamed up with L.A. County school kids for a weeklong summer filmmaking workshop, creating both original music videos and official ones for bands as wide-ranging as Daft Punk, Camila Cabello, Islands, Diplo, and St. Vincent.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith composer David Fleming joined Deadline’s Sound & Screen Television live-music event to discuss the nuances of creating the perfect spy score built on the foundation of trust.
Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith centers on two lonely strangers who land jobs working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travels and a dream brownstone in Manhattan. The catch: new identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. & Mrs. John and Jane Smith (played by Donald Glover and Maya Erskine). Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high-risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship milestone. Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for each other. What’s riskier, espionage or marriage?
When sitting down with series creators Glover and Francesca Sloane, Fleming said Glover only really had one theme in mind for the musical composition: trust.

The first-ever Gotham TV Awards offered a stark contrast between the Gotham Film & Media Institute’s annual celebration of cinema. While both awards shows were founded to toast independent productions — that is, before the Gotham Awards increased their budget cap eligibility requirements in 2023 — the Gotham TV Awards felt like a strangely intimate gathering that was mostly populated by showrunners, network executives, and the Gotham TV Awards jurors, with a few actors and press sprinkled in.
Sure, it could be that it’s the first year for the awards show and thus a smaller turnout and even venue. Or perhaps the Gotham TV Awards will remain a coveted industry event, one that feels like it’s only for insiders.
The intimacy was most prominent during the Anniversary Tribute for “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” icon Mariska Hargitay. The award was presented by Hargitay’s former co-star Stephanie March, and...

Season one of The Bear was about the stress of trying to save a financially ailing neighborhood restaurant, and season two captured the pressure of conceiving and opening a new — and very different — restaurant on a tight timeline.
Season three of the Emmy-winning, FX-produced Hulu series will follow Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) and the rest of the team at The Bear as they try to keep their new venture going and live up to Carmy’s increasingly exacting standards. Or so a full trailer for the coming season, due June 27 on Hulu, promises.

Hot off last year’s acclaimed The Iron Claw, Jeremy Allen White returns to his other dysfunctional family in the kitchen with The Bear season 3. The Bear is about to get more dysfunctional.
FX released a brief trailer for season three on Friday, offering a preview of the chaos to come after Jeremy Allen White’s Carmy opens the new restaurant alongside Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) and Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach).
After opening their now revamped restaurant — they transformed their sandwich shop last season — the trio and team experience tension as they face the pressure of delivering excellent service and dining.
“I’m getting drilled out there,” Moss-Bachrach’s Richie can be seen telling Carmy. The pair are later shown getting in a confrontation. The team will face even more mishaps including food and silverware dropping on the floor, the stove catching on fire and more.
“This is a dysfunctional kitchen,” Sydney says, with both Carmy and Richie responding, “Show me a functional one.”

Carmy and company are back in the first trailer for “The Bear” Season 3. (Apparently he didn’t freeze to death in that freezer!)
As the prodigy chef, played by Jeremy Allen White, opens the new restaurant alongside Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) and Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), they find themselves once again sparring. In one scene, Carmy yells, “No surprise!” after Richie brings a piñata into the kitchen. Richie responds: “Yes, surprise!”
In a shorter teaser released five days earlier, Sydney tells Carmy and Richie: “This is a dysfunctional kitchen!,” to which they respond in unison: “Show me a functional one!”
All episodes of award-winning FX dramedy are set to release on June 27 and will be available to stream on Hulu in the U.S. (and Disney+ internationally).
Season 2 of “The Bear” saw Carmy (Jeremy Allen White), Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) and Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) work together to transform their sandwich shop into a fine dining restaurant.

Childish Gambino is going out with a flourish. During a Gilga Radio Instagram livestream on Sunday (April 14th), the musical alter ego of Donald Glover confirmed he will be releasing a “finished” version of his 2020 album, 3.15.20, under the title Atavista.
As a follow-up, Gambino will release Bando Stone & The New World, a brand new project doubling as the soundtrack for his upcoming film of the same name. “We’re releasing Atavista, but after that, there’s the final Childish Gambino album — a soundtrack for the fans,” he said.
While the rapper-singer didn’t reveal a release date for either album, he did say a music video for “Little Foot Big Foot” (originally titled “35.31”) directed by longtime collaborator Hiro Murai is coming in “the next couple weeks.”
Gambino also played a few previously unreleased tracks, including “Human Sacrifice” and the aforementioned “Little Foot Big Foot” featuring Atlanta rapper Young Nudy. Listen...

Amazon Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” is taking this Emmy race seriously.
With stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine leading the charge, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” which draws inspiration from the 2005 movie featuring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, is set to compete in the drama categories at this year’s awards ceremony.
Crafted by Glover and Francesca Sloane, the show’s debut season stretches across eight episodes, centering on John and Jane Smith, secret agents who pose as a married couple while working for a shadowy corporation. Its blend of comedy and drama offered the potential to categorize it in either genre for awards consideration.

There’s still a few months until Season 3 of The Bear debuts, but Disney is holding audiences over with a clip from the upcoming installment.
The clip, revealed during Disney’s shareholder meeting on Wednesday, features Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) getting a surprise from two of his employees, Neil and Ted Fak (Matty Matheson and Ricky Staffieri).
After a bit of shouting, the pair finally get Carmy into the restaurant’s back office to see they’ve posted photos of every major food critic on the wall. Likely so that all the employees will know as soon as one of them steps foot inside the establishment.

When Mr. & Mrs. Smith was announced as a TV series for Prime Video in 2021, there were plenty of reasons to be skeptical about the project.
It was based on a movie of the same name that did reasonably well but isn't especially well-remembered.
The announced starring duo of Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge was intriguing, especially considering that both performers were credited as creators.
Both had a history of starring in and creating successful series, including Glover with Atlanta and Waller-Bridge with Fleabag. Plus, Waller-Bridge served as the showrunner in the first season of Killing Eve, another prestige series about an assassin.
But then Waller-Bridge dropped out of the project just a few months after it was announced due to "creative differences," with Maya Erskine replacing her as the show's female lead. Glover and Francesca Sloane are credited as the co-creators.

As a followup to Atlanta and Swarm, Donald Glover adapting Doug Liman’s entertaining 2005 spy caper Mr. and Mrs. Smith for a television format is an unlikely choice. That said, there’s a certain timeliness to the premise of a married spy couple trying to survive missions and each other, ideally suited for every generation.
This iteration, created by Glover and Francesca Sloane, is a strictly millennial-geared update with a progressive heart and more romantic soul to round out its stealthy concept. Whereas this Glover and Maya Erskine-starring update likely won’t spur a pop culture impact as significant as the formerly-renowned Brangelina film did, Mr. and Mrs. Smith is a sizably entertaining and meditative spy thriller fit for a millennial demographic.
Set in bustling NYC, two stranger spies, John (Glover) and Jane Smith (Erskine), are interviewed for a potential spy gig by a mysterious agency they only speak to via texts.

Even by the standards of a Hollywood ecosystem where everything is IP, and IP is everything, the idea of adapting a TV show from Mr. & Mrs. Smith seemed odd. The 2005 action-comedy exists in the pop-culture memory less as a movie (though it’s excellent) than as the origin story of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s relationship. At the ceremony, held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Monday night, the beloved Chicago restaurant-world comedy scored the prizes for Outstanding Comedy Series, Comedy Actor (Jeremy Allen White), Comedy Supporting Actress (Ayo Edebiri) and Comedy Supporting Actor (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), as well as the awards for Comedy Writing and Directing. With creator Christopher Storer, the recipient of the latter two awards, absent from tonight’s ceremony, EP-actor (and real-world chef) Matty Matheson stepped up to accept the Comedy Series prize on behalf of the team.
“What’s good? I just want to thank restaurants as a whole, hospitality as a whole,” said Matheson, before being kissed passionately on the mouth by excited co-star Moss-Bachrach.
