Both Hiromu Arakawa and Kentaro Miura are legends in the manga industry. While Arakawa’s Fullmetal Alchemist has captured the hearts of thousands of otakus all over the globe, Berserk is one of the best series in the seinen genre.
Ever since Kentaro Miura began his manga in 1989, many authors have been inspired by Berserk. Several series also hold a similarity to Guts’ adventure and Fullmetal Alchemist is one of them. Plenty of scenes and concepts in Fullmetal Alchemist are similar to those present in Miura’s work.

While any two series can be compared and similar characteristics can be found between them, under no circumstances can it be called a ripoff. Similarly, despite Fullmetal Alchemist and Berserk having some common elements, it does not mean Hiromu Arakawa copied Kentaro Miura‘s work. A Reddit post points out...

When James Cameron Was Allegedly Punched By Ed Harris. (Photo Credit – Instagram/Wikipedia)
James Cameron, who has a long, sordid reputation for being quite difficult to work with, was once allegedly punched by one of his film’s leading man. According to The Things, rumors have persisted for years that The Abyss actor Ed Harris punched Cameron in the face. There is no record of Harris or Cameron ever verifying the claim. However, decades later, Ed Harris said that he hated filming The Abyss, noting the cast was mistreated during the film’s production.
Following the wild success of James Cameron’s 1986 film Aliens, he directed the underwater science fiction film The Abyss, which was reportedly shot in an abandoned power plant called the Cherokee Nuclear Power Plant. According to Starlog Magazine, Cameron built two largest freshwater tanks for the film, which were six stories deep and 210 feet wide.

James Cameron Films ranked by Box Office Gross. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
James Cameron is the undisputed king of the box office, as three of the four highest-grossing films in Hollywood history belong to the director. Whether it’s romance, action, or sci-fi genre, the acclaimed filmmaker has always hit the bullseye, with his work resonating well with the audience.
Cameron has directed nine films so far, starting with Piranha II: The Spawning in 1982. However, the director has largely disowned his debut film, since he was replaced from it within two weeks of production, and the movie’s box office collection remains unavailable. Here are the rest of James Cameron’s eight films, ranked on the basis of their worldwide gross.

James Cameron, the director of Titanic, The Abyss, and a real-life adventurer who has led deep-sea expeditions, narrates the six-part underwater discovery series, OceanXplorers, which follows an expert team of scientists and explorers aboard the OceanXplorer, a state-of-the-art scientific research vessel, as they investigate uncharted frontiers in the world’s oceans. Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images For US-ireland Alliance The ship, with all of its advanced technology and gadgets — including two submersibles and a helicopter — is pretty amazing, but even more awe-inspiring are the creatures that the crew encounters and documents, some for the first time ever. National Geographic’s exploration series are consistently top-notch, yet still OceanXplorers manages to take things to breathtaking levels, especially as the OceanXplorer dives deeper. In recent months, James Cameron, who’s undertaken a major effort to restore many of his classics in 4K, has come under fire from fans for the way these movies now look. One of the common complaints is that the transfers, which were done in conjunction with Peter Jackson’s Park Row Post, may (or may not) have used AI technology to somewhat change how the movies look. One of the biggest complaints is that the movies look too pristine, with all grain structure being scrubbed. Noted film preservationist Robert Harris, in an email to us, called the transfers “revisualizations” rather than restorations, although he generally seemed to appreciate what Cameron was going for (read more about his comments here).
Fans, however, have been divided, as seen in the reaction to a story we posted a few months back on the 4K transfer of True Lies, which is the one that is the most controversial.

James Cameron Shoots Down Fan Disapproval of Aliens Remaster - Main Image
James Cameron's 1986 sequel, Aliens, had recently received the remastered 4K transfer treatment, amid the anticipated release of Alien: Romulus, and he wasn't going to let any form of criticism slide from his view.
James Cameron Claims Remastered Aliens Movie is How They Shot All Avatar Films
Considering that any self-proclaimed Alien franchise fan would want to binge-watch the first seven films before seeing Alien: Romulus in theaters, it makes sense to remaster each movie's HD quality for easier watching.
However, it appears not everyone is satisfied with how 1986's Aliens turned out.
"When people start reviewing your grain structure, they need to move out of mom's basement and meet somebody. Right? I'm serious." Cameron recently told THR, addressing fan complaints on how the image quality was not 'as high as they wanted it to be.' "I mean,...

Sweet, calm James Cameron has responded to critique of the True Lies and Aliens 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release transfers.
James Cameron has been attending the same charm school as Ridley Scott it seems, as he responds to criticism over the recent 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray releases of True Lies and Aliens in particular. We covered some of the backlash towards them both here.
Fans had waited a long, long time for Cameron’s older films to get fresh transfers. The expectation was that James Cameron’s exacting technical demands would result in something really special. It didn’t quite work out like that, and Cameron himself it turns out was very aware of the fan feedback regarding the releases.
Rest assured that he’s taken the critique in his stead, and responded to it in a nice, measured way. “When people start reviewing your grain structure, they need to...

James Cameron has no time to defend the 4K transfers of his films like “Aliens” and “True Lies.”
The auteur told The Hollywood Reporter that fans who criticize the quality of restorations should “get a life.” Cameron seems to be echoing the sentiment that Ridley Scott doled out for the historical accuracy of his own features like “Napoleon.” Basically, let the directors direct, the restorers restore, and be content as cinephiles, according to Cameron.
“When people start reviewing your grain structure, they need to move out of mom’s basement and meet somebody. Right? I’m serious,” Cameron said. “I mean, are you fucking kidding me? I’ve got a great team that does the transfers. I do all the color and density work. I look at every shot, every frame, and then the final transfer is done by a guy who has been with me [for years]. All the ‘Avatar’ films are done that way.

You gotta love James Cameron when he’s the most James Cameron.
The Oscar-winning writer-producer-director got on the phone to talk about his new National Geographic documentary OceanXplorers, and from there we branched out to touch on a host of other Cameron-verse topics — like this week’s release of Alien: Romulus, Netflix’s upcoming animated series Terminator Zero, Avatar 3 aka Avatar: Fire & Ash, the recent 4K transfers of Aliens and True Lies, Roland Emmerich’s viral comments about a Fantastic Voyage reboot, and why Cameron doesn’t believe extraterrestrial life has visited Earth.
Cameron didn’t hold back. The 69-year-old demonstrated his immense passion and depth of knowledge for all things oceanic when discussing his upcoming series OceanXplorers (trailer below) — which follows a young team of researchers on a state-of-the-art ship exploring uncharted ocean territory. Cameron narrates the six-episode series, which has been dubbed “one of the most ambitious ocean adventures ever filmed.

With three Academy Awards and some of the biggest box office champs of all time under his belt, James Cameron has certainly found a way to blend art and commerce to great effect. Let’s take a look back at all nine of his films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1954 in Ontario, Canada, Cameron cut his teeth with a variety of on-set jobs, most notably as a special effects artist. Although he technically made his directorial debut with the creature feature “Piranha II: The Spawning” (1982), he truly burst onto the scene with the sci-fi hit “The Terminator” (1982), which cast Arnold Schwarzenegger as a futuristic cyborg sent on a mission to kill a young woman (Linda Hamilton) before she can give birth to the messiah.
Cameron further cemented his reputation as a master of action with such adrenaline-pumping titles as “Aliens” (1986), “The Abyss” (1989), “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” (1991) and “True Lies...

Film historians agree that computer-generated imagery (CGI) was first used in a motion picture as far back as Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo (1958), which utilized abstract computer animation under its opening credits. Of course that’s not immediately what comes to mind when we think of CGI (or just plain CG) today: the earliest, crude instances of the kind of CG that dominates modern filmmaking were first seen in Westworld (1973), Star Wars, Looker (1981), the groundbreaking Tron (1982), Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982), and The Last Starfighter (1984).
But the first genuine leap in using CG to animate and incorporate photorealistic three-dimensional objects into live-action came in James Cameron’s The Abyss (1989) via the creation of the alien pseudopod made out of digital ocean water. The techniques developed by Industrial Light and Magic for that film blew open the doors to the true CG revolution in cinema, which began in the 1990s...

The history of visual effects, like every other aspect of the arts, exists on a spectrum. Yet there are undeniably milestone works that push a given medium forward, whether through sheer force of popularity and influence, or through innovation, or sometimes both. "Tron," a film made by Steven Lisberger in 1982, is one of those milestone movies. Although it began as a modest success at the box office, it quickly gained a cult following thanks to its application of innovative techniques, particularly its moments of computer animation. Despite those moments only amounting to about 15 or 20 minutes of screen time, it proved that computer graphics imagery could be viable in cinema, leading to the dominance of CGI that we see in fantasy and sci-fi films today.
Yet one of the problems with innovation is that, before new technology is proven to work, most folks either can't see how it'll work, or instinctively...

Recently, I wrote an article about how Ron Howard’s Cocoon was hard to find in any format. It came out on DVD many years ago but went out of print and has never been issued on Blu-ray. You also can’t find it digitally on any platform. This is a perfect example of why you should always hang on to your physical media, as I’m lucky enough to own the now out-of-print DVD of that movie, and while it’s far from an ideal copy, it’s something.
But that got me thinking. What other movies are hard to find? I opened up the forum on Twitter, and I was shocked by how many prominent films aren’t available digitally and have gone out of print on disc, making them all the more precious for collectors. At the same time, there are some happy endings, such as Martin Campbell’s No Escape,...

M. Night Shyamalan knows that his 2004 movie "The Village" is experiencing a critical reevaluation.
Despite being a hit, the movie was not particularly well-liked upon its initial release. Roger Ebert called it "a colossal miscalculation," basically summing up the critical and audience reaction to it at the time; many viewers who didn't immediately guess the movie's twist ending felt it wasn't strong enough to support the rest of the film around it. But in the years since, the tide has slowly begun to turn and folks are coming around to what some of us at /Film have long shouted from the rooftops: "The Village" rules, actually.
"A lot of people keep coming up to me on the street," Shyamalan told us in a recent interview, speaking about his awareness of the film's slow reappraisal. He's so aware, in fact, that he's actively working on getting the movie a proper Blu-ray...

The Oscar for Best Visual Effects is particularly tough to predict because of the complicated system by which the nominees are determined in three stages. The members of the executive committee of the branch cast preferential ballots to determine 20 films for further consideration. These are then winnowed down to 10 semi-finalists, which will be announced on December 17, 2024. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscars Best Visual Effects predictions.)
All members of the branch are invited to a virtual screening of excerpts from these 10 films in January at which potential nominees may discuss their work. Ballots are counted using a system of re-weighted range voting to determine the five nominees, which will be revealed on January 17. The entire voting membership of the academy will then vote for the winners, which will be revealed during the 97th Academy Awards ceremony on March 2.

"Backdraft" is a deluxe dad movie. It's a dad movie with daddy issues wherein the un-dad protagonist attains maximum manhood by becoming his dad. That all these dads and potential dads are not just firemen, but Chicago firemen blasts this dad movie into the Daddysphere.
Now that a whole generation of moviegoers that grew up watching "Backdraft" with their dads are themself dads, it's time for Hollywood to tempt dad movie fate with a dad movie remake. Why are dad movie remakes such a perilous undertaking? Because dad movies only become dad movies by becoming couch worthy. This takes years of rewatches on casual Saturday and Sunday afternoons. And there are dad movie tiers. Some dad movies are bad movies that contain enough dad-friendly elements to justify the sit in a chore-less situation. Others are good enough to make a little nagging worth it.

Back in February, we learned that the EC Comics brand is being revived by Oni Press – and now The Wrap has revealed the upcoming EC Comics title Epitaphs from the Abyss will be introducing three new horror hosts, following in the footsteps of iconic EC Comics horror hosts like the Crypt Keeper, the Old Witch and the Vault Keeper. These new characters, designed by artist Dustin Weaver, are the Grave-Digger, the Tormentor, and the Grim Inquisitor. As the brand moves forward, the Grim Inquisitor – who “is part of a complex bureaucracy and answers to an unseen Supreme Inquisitor,” is expected to take the lead in his own title.
Oni Press editor-in-chief Sierra Hahn said, “We’ll have the Grave-Digger setting the stage, but with a little bit of that fun EC edge that’s a little bit dark, that’s a little bit playful.“

Here at JoBlo, we love physical media – Especially 4K discs. To a lot of us, the 4K revolution has really given some of our favourite movies new life, with the format allowing us to see pristine versions of classic films that come the closest to presenting them in a way that allows us to experience them the way first run audiences did when they came out. While DVD and Blu-ray were both great for their time, 4K is miraculous, with movies like The Crow looking better in this format than they have since their original theatrical runs. One of the reasons is that the people doing the 4K restorations usually go back to a movie’s negative to make it look as good as it can, and the people restoring these films are passionate (even if some efforts have been controversial).
Yet, some of our favorite movies still aren’t available in 4K.

Even though the name of Kristen Stewart is mostly associated with the awkward and somewhat cringey Bella Swan, the actress managed to make a number of far cries from that iconic role. These include her hits Café Society (2016) and Love Lies Bleeding (2024).
More than that, the Twilight star also entered the genre of sci-fi flicks, but this attempt was not so well-received as it was hoped to be. However, this movie is now being massively revised and is claimed to be an overlooked must-watch by Reddit.
The film starts by introducing us to a group of workers of a drilling facility at the bottom of the ocean. Both their usual day and their station get ruined by an earthquake that causes water crashing through the walls of the destroyed facility.
Led by their captain, the crew tries to survive not only drowning, but rather an attack of hostile deadly creatures that emerge out of nowhere.

If you have Hulu (or Disney Star in Canada), you might have noticed that Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later is no longer available. Indeed, Disney lost the rights to the independently financed original film, with them now only owning the rights to the Searchlight-financed sequel, 28 Weeks Later. That’s why you can’t find it on streaming sites and why the Blu-ray Disc is out of print. Sony now owns the rights to the film, with it being part of the package they acquired when they bought the rights to finance the upcoming Danny Boyle/ Alex Garland sequel, 28 Years Later. So, presumably, Sony will be reissuing the film in the near future, and there’s a chance that when they do, it’ll look much better than it ever did before. But why?

Netflix’s latest addition to its Swedish drama roster, “A Part of You,” stars Felicia Truedsson and Edvin Ryding. Directed by Sigge Eklund and written by Michaela Hamilton, this film dives deep into the emotional turmoil of its characters while maintaining a stark sense of realism.
An Honest Look at Teen Drama
“A Part of You” presents itself as a straightforward drama without any pretensions. It adheres to the realistic aesthetic familiar to recent Swedish productions on Netflix, focusing on authentic character portrayals and dramatic themes. The film takes its characters’ struggles seriously, delivering a grounded and believable narrative.
However, this commitment to realism comes at a cost. Stylistically, the film resembles a made-for-television movie, and thematically, it leans towards moralistic storytelling. It suggests that straying from societal and parental expectations inevitably leads to trouble—a premise the film neither deeply examines nor robustly challenges. Despite this, Felicia Truedsson delivers a compelling performance,...

While it's been nearly 70 years since the last issue of EC Comics was published, its hair-raising morality tales are more timely now than ever before, and its enduring legacy still resonates with countless creators influenced by EC's relentlessly bold and macabre storytelling. So it was an especially thrilling and chilling day for so many fans this past February when it was announced that Oni Press has partnered with William M. Gaines Agent, Inc. to resurrect EC Comics with new titles this summer!

Roger Corman, the B-movie legend who helped launch the careers of Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, and Francis Ford Coppola, among many others, has passed away at the age of 98. His family told Variety that he died on Thursday, May 9, at his home in Santa Monica, surrounded by his loved ones. The family also released this statement:
"His films were revolutionary and iconoclastic, and captured the spirit of an age. When asked how he would like to be remembered, he said, 'I was a filmmaker, just that.'"
It's no exaggeration to say that Hollywood wouldn't be the same without Roger Corman. In a career that spanned half a century and hundreds of films, he directed and/or produced B-movie hits and cult classics like "House of Usher," "The Little Shop of Horrors," "Death Race 2000," and "Attack of the Crab Monsters" (not to mention a famously unreleased "Fantastic Four" movie...

Original Sepultura members Max and Iggor Cavalera have announced a re-recording of the legendary thrash band’s Schizophrenia, out June 21st via Nuclear Blast Records.
It marks the third re-recorded Sepultura album from the Cavalera brothers following new versions of their earliest works Morbid Visions and Bestial Devastation. They appear to be going through the discography in chronological order, with Schizophrenia being Sepultura’s vaunted third album from 1987.
Cavalera shared the re-recorded take of “Escape to the Void” as the lead single for the release. The killer riffs and energy of the original remain intact, while the modern recording and production offers a better glimpse at the technicality under the hood. The original Schizophrenia is a beloved album, though its production left something to be desired. That’s where these re-recordings excel — revisionist in a good way.

And it’s lovely. It’s great.”

Update: Producer and Archivist Robert Harris has reached out to JoBlo to add his take on James Cameron’s 4K releases, saying, “These films have not been restored in any way, nor was restoration needed. There should be no problems with the original elements. The work performed was a re-visualization. An entirely new digital product, which (to varying degrees of success) appears to have achieved Mr. Cameron’s goals. If these were attempts at restoration, they would fail in all regards. All best, Robert Harris.”
Not long after reaching out to us, Harris sent a follow-up email with more comments:
Allow me to chime in again and possibly clarify. Very much akin to Titanic, these films seemingly were restricted during production based upon accessible technology – be it film stock, optics – whatever.

The Fabelmans (2022), arguably Steven Spielberg’s most personal movie to date, had everyone talking. Starring Michelle Williams and Paul Dano, it’s a semi-autobiographical tale that’s loosely based on the director’s childhood and his early years as a film director.
However, Spielberg’s reluctance to delve into his family’s history stemmed from worries that his parents would suffer, so the project was dropped for twenty years. Regardless, with seven Oscar nominations upon its release, The Fabelmans has generated a lot of Oscar buzz.
James Cameron’s Avatar
Does that encourage other filmmakers to document their own life stories on screen? Well, the director of Avatar and Titanic, though, is not going to take that route. James Cameron remains surprisingly uninterested when it comes to sharing the story of his own journey to success on the big screen because he finds it “boring”.

Adam Wingard's "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" features an epic team-up between the legendary beasts, Godzilla and Kong, underlining the necessity to push aside a millennia-spanning feud to tackle an even greater threat. Firmly rooted in the perspective of the monsters, where most of the storytelling stems from nonverbal, evocative visuals (which are also cool as heck), "Godzilla x Kong" understands the appeal of the monster movie genre -- it's pure spectacle that often tugs at the heartstrings. While it cannot get much simpler than that, the film does a commendable job of pitting two giants against a villain scorned, whose motivations culminate in destroying the world without a second thought about the cost of such an act.
The monster movie franchise is as gargantuan as the beasts that are featured in it, spanning back to 1933's "King Kong," which kickstarted a cultural phenomenon that still feels fresh and fun to this day.

For years, rights issues have held up updated video releases of James Cameron’s Aliens, The Abyss, and True Lies, with the latter two features skipping Blu-ray entirely. At last, all three have come to 4K Uhd, and their joint release allows one to better appreciate the unexpected connections that link these otherwise completely distinct features.
On a basic level, all three films, covering less than a decade from 1986 to 1994, chart one of the most meteoric career rises in Hollywood history—one that you can see in their exponentially increasing budgets and scale. Aliens, made in the wake of Cameron’s breakout success of 1984’s The Terminator, was produced for a paltry $18 million, not much more than the $11 million allocated to Ridley Scott’s Alien nearly a decade earlier. But Cameron, who cut his teeth in Roger Corman’s micro-budget talent incubator, knew how to stretch a dollar to its maximum use.

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray releases of True Lies and Aliens have hit delays in the UK – one longer than the other.
The plan was that now James Cameron has finally got around to approving new transfers for three of his films in particular – Aliens, True Lies and The Abyss – that we would be watching them on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc by April. Nothing could go wrong.
Er, stuff has gone wrong. At least in the UK.
Notwithstanding question marks over the film’s transfers themselves (we’ve talked about those here), we learned just before Christmas that the UK release of The Abyss has been abandoned altogether. That’s down to one particular scene that the BBFC objected to, and James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment refused to budge on.
Now, problems with True Lies and Aliens.

The town of Kiruna, Sweden, is moving — its ground shifts so often from the giant mine below it that the whole place is in danger of collapsing. The townspeople have to pack up and leave, eventually… but it turns out Kiruna may be sinking faster than anyone thought: Quakes are occurring with more frequency, and people are falling into the earth. It’s up to one woman, Frigga (Tuva Novotny), who knows the mine better than anyone else, to save the town — and her family.
In the Swedish disaster movie The Abyss, also starring Peter Franzén and Kardo Razzazi, Frigga pushes her work-life balance to the limits as she battles against a crumbling mine while her children’s lives are at stake. The film was directed by Richard Holm (Gåsmamman) with a screenplay by Holm, his son Robin Sherlock Holm (The Machinery), and Nicola Sinclair.

The Abyss is a film written and directed by Richard Holm. It stars Tuva Novotny, Kardo Razzazi, Peter Franzén and Felicia Truedsson.
Sweden’s biggest rock burst, the world’s largest mine, causes hundreds of earthquakes every year. The surrounding communities have to keep moving due to the tremors, which destroy houses.
“The Abyss” is a Swedish film, dramatic and with a touch of ecological sustainability, about an overexploited mine that threatens to destroy a city. It is a small production that knows what it wants to achieve, how to do it, and above all, what resources it has and who its target audience is.
Thus, “The Abyss” is a television production that does not aim to reach the Hollywood disaster movie level and, by making good decisions (especially due to its budget), knows how to focus more on the characters and their development rather than the mine disaster itself.

Before we lost James Cameron to the virtual world of Pandora (where he is still doing fine work), he mounted some of the most physically daunting productions in the history of cinema. He submerged his cast and crew in 30-plus feet of water in order to authentically capture the (literally and figuratively) high-pressure environment of "The Abyss," executed a load of wild vehicular stunts in "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" (one of which was so perilous his cameraman refused to shoot it), and compelled 20th Century Fox to build a new studio in Mexico for his reconstruction of the title vessel in "Titanic." Though he was pioneering computer generated visual effects throughout this period, he loved practical spectacle -- and, judging from the box office on most of these movies (save for "The Abyss"), audiences shared his ardor.
