One of the best things about the mind-bending world of Christopher Nolan is that his films can always guarantee a joyride through time and space. The uniquely strange imagination of the filmmaker has given us masterpieces like Inception, Interstellar, and Tenet. But all of it originally began with Memento.
Memento [Credit: Lionsgate/Summit Entertainment]
Conceived during a car ride with his equally talented brother, Jonathan Nolan, the story for Memento was devised by the younger of the duo and then translated into a screenplay for a film. In 1999, Christopher Nolan directed Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Joe Pantoliano in the leading roles. The movie, which came out a year later, forever altered our brain chemistry.

Christopher Nolan was born with an innate ability to make the ground slide from underneath our feet with the kinds of theatrical movie experiences he delivers on the big screens.

Hugh Jackman teamed up with Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan for the first time in the 2006 movie The Prestige. He collaborated with a few notable names for the project, including music icon David Bowie.
Hugh Jackman once shared what it was like working with David Bowie in ‘The Prestige’ Hugh Jackman | Ferdaus Shamim/WireImage
Bowie’s accomplishments as a musician were almost matched by his accomplishments as an actor. The late artist starred in a variety of features throughout his long career, including Nolan’s Prestige. The picture saw him playing inventor Nikola Tesla, primarily sharing scenes with Jackman’s ambitious magician Richard Angier.
Jackman had nothing but kind words about his experience working with Bowie. During their interaction, however, Jackman let slip that he once tried to attend one of Bowie’s concerts in his younger years.
“I’ve got to say, he’s probably one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met.

Apple TV+ is releasing what looks to be a chilling new series, just in time for Halloween. According to the streamer, Before is an “an atmospheric, character-driven psychological thriller” about a child psychiatrist and widower who encounters a small boy with a “haunting connection” to his past. Naturally, the lead role is played by the “you look mah-velous” guy.
Yup, Billy Crystal is the star of this dramatic, seemingly creepy show that, judging from the description, seems not so dissimilar from The Sixth Sense, another story of a child psychologist who befriends a child with whom he shares a mysterious connection. But imagine the Bruce Willis part played by someone who seems like he might break into a medley of humorous show tunes at any moment.
Before also stars the great Judith Light, and one of the executive producers is Oscar-winning screenwriter Eric Roth, who recently penned the script for...

Whether playing Di Kate Fleming in Line of Duty or a back-against-the-wall bomb disposal expert in ITV’s Trigger Point, Vicky McClure has mastered the art of procedurals over the years.
But in Paramount+ series Insomnia from The Crown producer Left Bank, in which she plays a career woman, Emma, who experiences a breakdown when she suddenly stops being able to sleep, the actor-producer bucked the trend.
“I feel like I’ve grown up, I’m 40 now,” McClure told an Insomnia Q&a in London late last month. “There’s a lot of procedural drama that I do and I enjoy it, but I was excited to step into something that felt different.” McClure added that she quite enjoyed walking in heels for the entirety of the series, for example.

In 2002, Robin Williams and Al Pacino shared screen space in Christopher Nolan’s psychological thriller Insomnia. Compared to Nolan’s famed works, this film remained a very underrated one, but became a cult classic over the years. More significantly, it saw Williams in a completely different avatar as a scheming killer, which was a far cry from his comedic turns.

Al Pacino is the Oscar-winning actor who has starred in dozens of classics throughout his nearly 50 year career, from his star-making breakthrough in “The Godfather” (1972) to his late-career triumph in “The Irishman” (2019). Tour through our photo gallery of Pacino’s 25 greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Though an acting legend, it took Pacino 20 years and eight nominations to finally cash in his Oscar I.O.U. for “Scent of a Woman”. Prior to that he competed for “The Godfather”, “Serpico”, “The Godfather, Part II”, “Dog Day Afternoon”, “… And Justice for All”, “Dick Tracy” and “Glengarry Glen Ross”, but he didn’t win any of those bids.

Oppenheimer, Sky Cinema now, and Insomnia, Itvx, streaming now
We don't frequently include two films from the same director in the Stay-at-Home but, then again, we don't subscribe to arbitrary rules either and the opportunity to catch something old and something new (not to mention something borrowed) from Christopher Nolan's back catalogue seems too good to miss. First up you can now stream the Oscar-winning latest from the British director, which details the development of the atomic bomb via the life of Robert Oppenheimer. Whether the film needs to be quite as structurally convoluted is definitely debatable but Nolan does like that sort of thing and you can't argue with the beautifully recreated period detail and the magnetic performances from Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr and Emily Blunt, among others. From the opposite - and more formulaic - end of Nolan's career,...

Memento started life as a gritty, independent underdog of a film – but it would take one of Hollywood’s biggest directors, Steven Soderbergh, to get anyone to see it. More below…
Christopher Nolan’s Memento was a bit of an indie phenomenon on its release, earning rave reviews at the Venice Film Festival and quickly developing a cult following.
Telling the timey-wimey story of an anterograde amnesiac (Guy Pearce) attempting to track down his wife’s killer, the film’s reputation has only grown as its director has grown in stature.
In a new interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, however, the film’s screenwriter Jonathan Nolan has reiterated how instrumental Steven Soderbergh was in getting interest from distributors behind the scenes. As the Nolan brothers found, the hardest part of the film’s journey wasn’t getting it made – it was getting anyone to see it.

Robin Williams was one of the most beloved actors in Hollywood, who was known more for his comedic roles. Films such as Jumanji, Dead Poets Society, and Mrs. Doubtfire have featured the actor and Williams’ presence has made them certified classics. The late actor was also known for his dramatic roles in films such as Good Will Hunting, for which he won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
While Williams initially started his career with comedic roles, a rumor made the rounds that the actor was considered for the sinister role of Jack Torrance in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. While Jack Nicholson ended up playing the role, Williams was rumored to have been considered by Kubrick before seeing him in Mork & Mindy. However, Lee Unkrich’s new book on the film reportedly debunked the rumor and mentioned that Williams had no chance.

Christopher Nolan and his wife/producing partner, Emma Thomas, have receied their fair share of acclaim for 2023’s Oppenheimer; now, even the British monarchy is getting in on the action. On Thursday, it was announced that Nolan will receive knighthood, and Thomas will receive damehood, for their contributions to film.
The honor arrives the same month Nolan took home his first-ever Oscar, having won for Best Director with Oppenheimer. Beyond his win, the film took home six additional awards, including Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, and more.
Both Nolan and Thomas were born in London, and met while attending University College London. After marrying in 1997, the duo have collaborated on many films, including Tenet, Dunkirk, Interstellar, The Dark Knight, Insomnia, Memento, and more.

The third installment of the Sands: International Film Festival of St Andrews has set its slate, and that will include director Steven Soderbergh engaging in a conversation with directors Anthony and Joe Russo. I will moderate that discussion, which will touch on the preposterously unlikely way that Soderbergh discovered and godfathered the career of the duo that directed Hollywood’s all-time highest grossing film, Avengers: Endgame. The festival runs next month from April 19-21.
Soderbergh’s own career took off with sex, lies, and videotape, the film that just celebrated 35 years since the filmmaker turned Sundance into a lucrative independent film hatchery. It went on to win the Palme d’Or at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival, followed by Soderbergh’s first Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. He has gone on to direct films as diverse as Traffic, for which he received the 2000 Academy Award for Directing—the...

Sharon Stone became one of the most successful actors in the 1990s Hollywood. Starring in roles that were deemed mysterious or akin to a femme fatale, she became one of the more promising sex symbols in the film industry. With her beauty and charisma, Stone wowed her audiences, and with her talent in acting, she got in the good graces of the critics.

When I caught up with him and wife Emma Thomas at the Governors Ball after their seven-Oscar win for Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan was clearly relieved. “I was genuinely nervous tonight, ” he told me. “Even after all the awards shows we’ve been to this year, this one sitting there at the Oscars was just different.”
‘Oppenheimer’ producer Charles Roven at the Universal Oscar party Sunday night
In the end, he really didn’t have to worry about it. All the pundits (including me) predicting a sweep for Universal’s blockbuster about the man who created the atomic bomb were right. But Nolan’s veteran producing colleague Chuck Roven, who brought him the book in the first place, nonetheless also confessed to a real sense of nervousness about the fate of the film that came into the Dolby with a leading 13 nominations.

Zack Snyder, for most of his career, has made movies under the banner of Warner Bros. But after the Justice League controversy, he decided to move away and shook hands with streaming giant Netflix. The partnership brought about projects like Army of the Dead and Rebel Moon, and soon, will also see the sequel to the latter this spring.
Zack Snyder on The Joe Rogan Experience
Recently, the director appeared for a chat in The Joe Rogan Experience and talked about his partnership with Netflix, his movies under the streamer, and of all things – the distribution model of Netflix. One of the most controversial directors of our time, Snyder made it sound like movies made under streaming platforms perform better financially than those that open in theatres. This might strain his friendship with another director, who has always championed theatre releases over streaming.

It's been 23 years since Christopher Nolan dazzled moviegoers with his breakout neo-noir "Memento," and he has more than made good on that film's overwhelming promise. In terms of building a Hollywood filmmaking career, there's not a single misstep in his filmography. He proved himself capable of handling a major studio picture with "Insomnia," did a graceful one-for-them/one-for-me two-step between Batman movies and personal projects, and now can call his tune at an unprecedented level. Every studio wants Nolan, and they're willing to give him anything he wants to lock him down.
And now that he's about to win the Best Picture and Best Director Oscars for "Oppenheimer" (a three-hour biopic that is currently $60 million short of a $1 billion worldwide gross), his rate is about to get a significant bump.
Given that Nolan has never gone more than three years between movies, it's not too early to speculate as to what he'll do next.

Al Pacino starred in Sea of Love in 1989 after a four-year hiatus and gave a box office hit with his neo-noir crime thriller. Pacino’s last film before Sea of Love, Revolution, was a critical and commercial disaster. But it was Diane Keaton who put him back on the top of Hollywood by offering him Harold Becker’s movie. Before barging into his lawyer’s office and saving his career, she called him an idiot to his face in front of his lawyer.

Al Pacino played an NYPD detective in the film trying to catch a serial killer who targets and kills their victims through the singles column in a newspaper. The film, made on a budget of $19 million, grossed over $110 million at the box office.

No one does it quite like Christopher Nolan! The man is one of the finest filmmakers of all time thanks to his mind-blowing movies, which oftentimes require the audience to have a high level of intellect to truly grasp the essence of the film. Whether it is Inception, Interstellar, or Hollywood’s latest obsession, Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan knows how to create magic on the screen.

Christopher Nolan not only directs but also writes the script for his films, which sets him apart from the other filmmakers in the entertainment industry. To this date, Insomnia (2002) is his only feature film where he doesn’t get the credit for penning the story. However, there is an iconic dialogue from one of Christopher Nolan’s most popular films that he is still haunted by, only because he wasn’t the one who got to write it!

Stephen King is, as his name suggests, the king of horror fiction (while occasionally delving into other genres). The combination of his vivid writing style, characters with unique personalities and special abilities, and epic stories that unfurl with riveting suspense make his work rife for cinematic interpretation. Within these spine-chilling stories, King infuses keen observations on the human condition, and how evil — both supernatural and real — manifests in our society. Stephen King's literary works have produced some of the greatest films of all time including Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining," Brian De Palma's "Carrie," and Rob Reiner's "Stand By Me." Over 70 of his novels and short stories have been adapted into films or television shows, but since he is such a prolific writer — often churning out several books each year — there are countless that have yet to be adapted. In some ways, Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s biggest non-superhero movie, was a product of the pandemic. Until the winter of 2020, the director had been loyal to Warner Bros., and their logo was to be found on every film that Nolan either wrote, directed or produced.
While he was never formally tethered to that studio, Nolan had been monogamous as its cornerstone tentpole filmmaker, ever since his 1999 breakout indie film Memento led him to create Insomnia there.
That year, however, everything changed. The usually mild-mannered director was outraged by the decision of former WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar to perpetrate a blindside dumping of the studio’s entire slate onto its HBO Max streaming service. This attempt to build subscribers for its streaming service at a time few were going to theaters incensed Nolan and many others. Christopher Nolan is undoubtedly one of the greatest filmmakers in Hollywood right now. Even Martin Scorsese admits that Nolan can bring the cinematic revolution that the film industry is in dire need of. Although Nolan has not made a lot of movies, he has directed some of the most groundbreaking movies ever made. This implies that the director believes in quality over quantity.
Martin Scorsese has been in the industry for far longer than Christopher Nolan, and both of these directors agree on one thing. They both agree that franchise-led movies do not define global cinema. There was a fair amount of backlash on this opinion of theirs, and now an industry insider has also expressed his disagreement with the Tenet director’s viewpoint.

Christopher Nolan has made a few movies throughout his career that could be considered horror-adjacent, from 2002’s Insomnia to last year’s Oscar-nominee Oppenheimer.
“Oppenheimer has elements of horror in it definitely, as I think is appropriate to the subject matter,” Nolan himself said at an event at London’s British Film Institute this week.
But what about a full-on horror movie from Christopher Nolan? At the same event, the celebrated filmmaker explained that he’d indeed love to make a true horror movie someday.
“I think horror films are very interesting because they depend on very cinematic devices, it really is about a visceral response to things and so, at some point, I’d love to make a horror film,” Nolan said during the BFI conversation (thanks to Variety for the quotes).
He continued, “But I think a really good horror film requires a really exceptional idea. And those are few and far between.

Move over, James Bond fans. Your endless campaigning to see Christopher Nolan take his talents to the super-spy franchise has officially been made irrelevant. That's old news. Real ones know that the blockbuster filmmaker would be much better suited flexing his muscles a bit and expanding to the horror genre. None other than Nolan himself apparently agrees ... though with a caveat or two.

Christopher Nolan would “love to” do a horror film next and the Oppenheimer director is looking for the next, big idea to turn into a blockbuster film.

The Tenet director reflected on the matter after a member of the audience asked if Nolan would consider Oppenheimer a horror film.

Exclusive: Paramount+ has yanked a raft of international originals from its service along with several big-ticket acquired series.
Numerous English-language originals disappeared overnight last week, as the U.S. conglom’s strategy shift towards more Hollywood-style content and lower costs played out in real time. Other series that had been tipped for second seasons will not return.
Subscribers were left perplexed as shows vanished, and voiced bewilderment and frustration on X and elsewhere online. The removed shows have been taken off the streaming service in all territories.
Samantha Morton-starrer The Burning Girls and One Night, the Australia-set drama with Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker, have disappeared from the streamer. Likewise, Eleventh Hour Films-produced The Killing Kind, based on the book of the same name, and thriller The Serial Killer’s Wife, have been pulled.
The Doll Factory, the adaptation of the bestselling novel from Marcella producer Buccaneer, has also come down.

As DreamWorks Animation shifts to a new production-sharing model with Sony Pictures Imageworks (“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”), we get a taste of the studio’s indie vibe at its best with “Orion and the Dark” (co-produced with Netflix and currently streaming). It’s an imaginative fantasy-adventure about confronting adolescent fears, thanks to the mind-bending script by Charlie Kaufman (“Anomalisa“).
“I think Kaufman’s whimsy and humor are brilliant for this family film space,” producer Peter McCown told IndieWire. “I think it’s a great match and I hope that he continues in this space.”
Kaufman spent about a year adapting Emma Yarlett’s 2014 children’s picture book about a fear-conquering adventure involving the titular adolescent and Dark, his nemesis, setting it in ’90s Philadelphia and making Orion (Jacob Tremblay) a neurotic, artistic fifth grader and Dark (Paul Walker Hauser) a hulking, insecure figure with an existential crisis. Dark invites Orion...

It’s easy for children to be feel apprehensive and overwhelmed by the world. (To be fair, it’s also easy for a lot of adults to feel apprehensive and overwhelmed by the world, which, you know — thank god for therapists!) You could do a lot worse than to show a fretful youngster Orion and the Dark, a Dreamworks/Netflix animated movie that mounts a full-frontal attack on the notion of fear as a default state of mind. Orion (voiced by Jacob Tremblay) is an 11-year-old who’s afraid of a lot of things: cancer,...

Taking a page out of the Pixar playbook and animating entities turned into characters, DreamWorks Animation’s latest feature Orion and the Dark recalls ‘toons like Inside Out and Elemental as it tells the story of a young kid and his encounters with his greatest fear, the Dark.
Fortunately for adults who will likely have to sit through this with their kids, Dwa was smart enough to hire Oscar winner Charlie Kaufman to take on the task of bringing Emma Yarlett’s book to the screen. Basically the premise is intact, but Kaufman has expanded this world into Pixar territory where instead of Inside Out’s gang of Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, Anxiety and Disgust we get entities like Dark, Light, Insomnia, Quiet, Sleep, Unexplained Noises, and Dreams to help tell the tale of Orion, a kid full of neuroses and unchecked fears...

The Eternal Sunshine and Being John Malkovich screenwriter has adapted a picture book for his debut family film about being afraid of the dark
A mainstream children’s movie from screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, creator of Being John Malkovich and Synecdoche, New York? It has to be worth a look, if only for the pleasure of wondering how much of his own adult neurosis has crept in. For this DreamWorks/Netflix family animation, Kaufman has adapted a picture book by Falmouth-based British author Emma Yarlett, and Sean Charmatz makes his feature directing debut, having worked chiefly on storyboarding films such as SpongeBob SquarePants and The Lego Movie 2.
It is about an unhappy little kid called Orion (voiced by Jacob Tremblay), who is afraid of pretty much everything: putting his hand up in class, being bullied, causing the toilet to overflow with an immoderate bowel movement, talking to the girl he...

Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan is set to receive an honorary Cesar, France’s top film prize, at this year’s Cesar Awards, the French Academy said on Friday.
The Academy of Cinema Arts and Techniques and Canal+ said the British director will receive the career tribute at the 49th César ceremony on Feb. 23. Nolan will be feted as France’s top film honors are handed out in Paris.
“Christopher Nolan is a master director, capable of redefining the boundaries of cinematic excellence and transporting us beyond the boundaries of space and time. He transcends cinema to make it an unforgettable experience,” the French Academy said in statement.
