Turns out, the one thing everybody gathered for The Hollywood Reporter‘s annual Drama Actor Emmy roundtable has in common is the fact that they’ve all lied to land a job.
“All the time,” jokes Nicholas Galitzine, of both Starz’s Mary & George and Prime Video’s Red, White & Royal Blue, when the question is first posed.
Fellow Travelers‘ Matt Bomer is similarly quick to confess. “I absolutely figure skate, I play ice hockey. Rollerblade. Yes, years of experience,” he says through laughter.
The lies vary, of course; as do the consequences. But all six of the men gathered on this April afternoon at the Georgian Hotel cop to at least one lie — and perhaps unsurprisingly, it rarely ended well. Clive Owens (Monsieur Spade, A Murder at the End of the World) said he could ride a horse — a lie that came back to bite him when...

While Henry Cavill defined Superman for a decade, he has now moved on from the franchise and has been working on new projects. The actor was last seen in Matthew Vaughn’s spy comedy Argylle and is set to feature in the historical action comedy The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. The actor is also working on a Highlander reboot.
During the premiere of the Guy Ritchie directorial, Henry Cavill reportedly made fun of his unlucky streak as Superman. While talking about his collaborations with Ritchie, he mentioned his alleged post-credits scene in the director’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. He also took a dig at his appearance in Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam while doing so.

Henry Cavill nodded to his tumultuous history with post-credits scenes during a recent screening of his new Guy Ritchie-directed movie “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.” As reported by Insider, Cavill made some introductory remarks before the film and references his other Ritchie films, including his leading turn in the 2015 spy film “The Man from U.N.C.L.E” and his appearance “in a post-credits scene” for the director’s 2017 box office disappointment “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.”
“Turns out, I don’t have much luck with post-credit scenes,” Cavill then wisecracked to much audience laughter. “So, I may give up on those.”
Cavill is likely referring to how “King Arthur” did not get a sequel because it flopped at the box, but also a debacle ensued years later when he showed up as Superman in the post-credits scene of the 2022 comic book tentpole “Black Adam,” headlined by Dwayne Johnson. The moment...

Many of cinema’s hard men are notorious softies in real life. Ray Winstone may well be one of those, even if he admits to not looking particularly approachable.
“My wife always says to me, ‘Why do you look like you’re going to kill someone when you walk into a room?'” he tells Variety. “But I don’t mean to!”
Winstone’s long-standing status as the go-to man to depict violent approach-with-caution individuals or British mob bosses continues to serve him, however, as “The Gentleman” — Guy Ritchie’s eight-part Netflix spinoff of his 2019 gangster comedy feature of the same name — proves. In the series, awash in the classic Ritchie mix of guns, drugs, violence, aristocrats, boxing and tweed, Winstone stars as a gangland patriarch and head of a massive weed-growing empire. At best, Guy Ritchie's reputation errors on the side of eclectic. The British-born director has embraced a multitude of genres, breathing new life into crime thrillers in the early days of his career before banking a hard left to experiment with historical fiction, romance, and war. The films got bigger, and slicker, as Ritchie progressed as a filmmaker. He's worked hard to launch franchises, to build heightened worlds that run on intrigue and irreverence above all. And though not every project has worked out in Ritchie's favor, his sure-footed style has always been a heady joy to watch.
Sure, Ritchie's over-the-top style is at times easy to poke fun at. He's more or less made the same movie over and over, regardless of genre. "Sherlock Holmes" is not unlike "The Man from U.N.C.L.E," nor is "Snatch" all that far off from "RockNRolla." But there's something...

The Zurich Film Festival, which runs Sept. 28 – Oct. 8, will honor the Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen with its Golden Eye award in recognition of his “successful career and versatility,” the Swiss event said Monday.
Mikkelsen will accept the award on Oct. 6, and will present his latest film, “The Promised Land,” which had its world premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival this month. Nikolaj Arcel’s film was described by Variety critic Guy Lodge as a “lavishly upholstered historical romp,” and “a Danish Western, built on black-and-white moral binaries and a yee-haw sense of intrepid adventure.”
Lodge wrote: “Notionally rooted in historical fact, but embellished with storybook romance and flouncing cartoon villainy, this roundly enjoyable Venice competition entry finally owes all its residual gravitas (and at least half its considerable handsomeness) to the expressive woodcut visage of one Mads Mikkelsen.”

Charlie Hunnam went from playing Jax in Sons of Anarchy to starring in King Arthur as the titular hero. But initially, Hunnam was far from the director’s ideal choice for the role.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword was a 2017 contemporary re-imagining of the medieval legend. It was directed by Guy Ritchie, who admittedly had a lot of doubts about modernizing the movie.
“I had a two week existential crisis, where I’m convinced I’ve made the worst mistake in the world,” Ritchie said to ABC News. “And then the phoenix of confidence rises out of the ashes. And then gradually you find your momentum the film finds its own way.”
When he was searching for someone to cast as the titular hero, Hunnam was the first to volunteer.

“The Equalizer 3” is here, once again directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Denzel Washington. This time around Washington’s Robert McCall finds himself in beautiful Italy, where he runs afoul of the local mafia and has to kill them all in increasingly creative ways. It’s supposed to be the last in the franchise that was based off of the 1980s TV series, but this could be the best of the bunch, with Washington in top form.
TheWrap spoke to director Fuqua about his fifth (!) collaboration with Washington, bringing things home with “Equalizer 3,” his experience working on Disney’s “King Arthur” and the version of the “Miami Vice” he briefly developed with Michael Mann.
Action franchises are built in different ways — sometimes the stunts come first and the story is modeled around that, sometimes locations inform story. How do you build “Equalizer” movies?
It starts with: What is the movie about?...

Ray Stevenson died on location in Italy this week while working on the film Cassino in Ischi. In it, he plays Nic Cassino, who appears to be the title character. But throughout his career the actor was renowned for strong supporting roles. Stevenson exemplified this “one for all” spirit as Porthos in The Three Musketeers (2011) and honed it through The Book of Eli (2010), King Arthur (2004), the Thor movies, and the upcoming Star Wars Disney+ series, Ashoka. He was at his most supportive, even as a lead character, when he played legionnaire Titus Pullo in HBO’s Rome. Pullo was a warrior with a heart of gold, but at one point he could also be the second-hand-man to an early version of a mob kingpin.
But Stevenson was second to no one in the role of Danny Greene, the titular character of writer-director Jonathan Hensleigh’s 2011 gangster-genre love letter, Kill the Irishman.

The late Irish actor Ray Stevenson was quite an expert at playing outsize heavies and larger-than-life characters. It's no wonder that he appeared in films like "Punisher: War Zone," the most enjoyably violent movie in the Marvel Comics canon, or "Rrr" a maximalist piece of Telugu cinema that felt like several action films crammed into one. In the latter, Stevenson was particularly theatrical, snarling melodramatically as a colonialist villain. Stevenson stops just short of actually twirling his mustache in that film.
Stevenson passed away on May 22, 2023, at the age of 58 leaving behind a colorful legacy of villains from widely seen franchise films and TV shows.
Stevenson occasionally brushed up against the classics, although it was usually in a comic book milieu. He appeared in a film adaptation of "The Three Musketeers," but it was a literarily inaccurate action bonanza directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. He played one of the Knights of the Round Table,...

Ray Stevenson, a versatile actor known for genre fare such as Punisher: War Zone, the Thor movies, HBO’s Rome and much, much more, has died. He was 58.
Born George Raymond Stevenson on May 25, 1964, in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, he harbored acting ambitions from an early age. He enrolled at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, from where he eventually obtained his graduate degree.
From there, he kicked off a career in British and European TV, starting with 1993’s A Woman’s Guide To Adultery, in which he had a small role as a journalist. He racked up credits in a number of TV series well known to audiences, including Peak Practice, Holby City and The Bill.
But on the small screen, his true big break was HBO’s Rome, in which he played the cheery, violent Titus Pollo. It raised his profile, and he began to score bigger parts both on TV and the big screen.

Not many actors could claim they had played multiple Marvel characters and Star Wars characters in addition to famous historical figures and the villain in one of the biggest Tollywood hits of all time, but Ray Stevenson was one of them. As first reported by Italian news outlets and later confirmed by The Wrap and Variety, the actor died today at the age of 58. Born in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, Stevenson began acting in film and TV in the '90s. He would go on to become a bigger name thanks to his roles as Titus Pullo in the HBO series "Rome" and as Dagonet, one of Arthur's Knights of the Round Table, in Antoine Fuqua's 2004 period action-adventure movie "King Arthur."

It's a cliché to claim overnight success takes years, but that doesn't make it untrue.
Take Clive Owen. After getting his start working on BBC and Channel 4 TV productions in the late 1980s, he suddenly found himself in high demand by the mid-2000s. Be it Antoine Fuqua's realism-driven take on the Arthurian legends with "King Arthur," Mike Nichols' big screen version of Patrick Marber's erotic play "Closer," Robert Rodriguez's visually trail-blazing neo-noir comic book movie "Sin City," or Spike Lee's '70s throwback heist thriller "Inside Man," it felt like Owen was being cast in anything and everything under the sun.
There's a good reason for that. Owen seems just as comfortable playing strong, silent types as he does insecure, entitled, affluent figures or hard-edged antiheroes with a habit of inner monologuing. It's the same versatility that allows him to easily slip into the role of Theo Faron,...

On the list of movies I've watched the most in my life, Hocus Pocus is right up there at the top of the list (along with Antoine Fuqua's King Arthur Director's Cut) thanks to its annual airings on Freeform (formerly ABC Family), so I'm thrilled that Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy have announced they'll be reprising their roles as the Sanderson Sisters in a Hocus Pocus sequel that will be released on the streaming service Disney+ in the fall of 2022.
The Hocus Pocus 2 news was shared on the official Disney+ Twitter page (see below), and while a sequel was officially announced by Disney late last year, this is the first official confirmation that we'll see at least some of the original cast members reprise their roles in the follow-up film.

With Disney’s continuing cycle of live-action remakes of animated classics, the question invariably becomes: Is this really justified? While it’s been very hit and miss, thus far, in the case of “Aladdin,” director Guy Ritchie has made a much more engaging remake than the previous live-action version of a Howard Ashman/Alan Menken musical fantasy, “Beauty and the Beast.”
The secret was providing greater relevance for today while staying true to the spirit of the original — and yet opening it up in a way that plays totally to the strengths of live action. Chief among them was encouraging production designer Gemma Jackson (“King Arthur”) to create “a whole new world” that was colorful and diverse, which allowed Will Smith to be Will Smith as the beloved Genie, and empowered Naomi Scott to be a more politically active and ambitious as Princess Jasmine.

"Do you trust me?" And here we go. Disney has finally revealed the first full-length official trailer for their upcoming live-action take on Aladdin, directed by British filmmaker Guy Ritchie. This new Aladdin stars Egyptian-Canadian actor Mena Massoud as the "street urchin" Aladdin, who falls for the princess Jasmine, played by Naomi Scott. In addition, Will Smith plays the genie and he definitely is blue and wacky and weird and everything else you'd expect from the genie. This seems to follow the same plot as the original animated film, with Jafar out to use Aladdin to get his hands on the lantern himself. The full cast includes Billy Magnussen, Nasim Pedrad, Marwan Kenzari, Numan Acar, and Navid Negahban. This updated take on the 1992 animated Disney classic will feature new songs by Alan Menken and La La Land songwriters Benj Pasek & Justin Paul. This doesn't look like a complete disaster, thankfully,...

Mark Wahlberg is eyeing a starring role in Infinite, a reincarnation thriller from director Antoine Fuqua.
Infinite, a developing sci-fi film from director Antoine Fuqua, is in the midst of a transition. While the imminently-re-releasing Avengers: Endgame is the expected, well, endgame of Chris Evans’s tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Captain America (maybe?), the actor has several interesting starring roles on his docket, with one such project being Infinite. However, in the latest news, it seems that, with regards to Infinite, Chris Evans – unlike Cap – can't "do this all day."
Mark Wahlberg is reportedly in negotiations to replace Chris Evans as the headlining star of Inifinite. Evans, who has been attached to the project since February, has dropped out, due to scheduling issues. Star-swap notwithstanding, the fast-tracked movie project will adapt author D. Eric Maikranz’s 2009 novel, The Reincarnationist Papers. Prolific producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura...

"You really don't know who I am...?" Disney has debuted a new "Special Look" 60-second TV spot for their upcoming live-action take on Aladdin, directed by British filmmaker Guy Ritchie. This new Aladdin stars Egyptian-Canadian actor Mena Massoud as the "street urchin" Aladdin, who falls for the princess Jasmine, played by Naomi Scott. In addition, Will Smith plays the genie and we finally get a good look at him here in all his awkward blue splendor. Oh boy, get ready. The first teaser didn't show much and this trailer doesn't reveal much either, but at least we can now gawk and how weird Smith's genie looks. Here's the latest "Special Look...

As we approach the end of January, the first month of 2019 will see the lowest number of tickets sold in at least 25 years. The total could be down some 20 percent from last year, which followed similar drops in each of the preceding two. This weekend will come in around $100 million in total gross. That’s a drop of $43 million, or 30 percent, from pre-Super Bowl weekend 2018.
M. Night Shyamalan’s “Glass” (Universal) led all films on its second weekend with $19 million, but fell 53 percent. The totals for the two new releases, “The Kid Who Would Be King” (20th Century Fox) and “Serenity” (Aviron), starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway, could manage only half the “Glass” total. Throw in a low-end response to Oscar nominees and the results are discouraging indeed.

M. Night Shyamalan’s “Glass” easily maintained its reign in North America, adding $19 million during its second weekend of release for a domestic tally of $73.5 million.
Despite a steep 53% decline, the weekend haul of “Glass” was enough to top box office charts as newcomers “The Kid Who Would Be King” and “Serenity” fell flat.
Working Title and 20th Century Fox’s “The Kid Who Would Be King” earned $7 million when it debuted in 3,531 venues, a potentially disastrous result for a film that cost over $60 million before taking marketing into account. The family friendly film, directed by Joe Cornish, came in at the low end of expectations and opened at No. 4 despite positive reviews.
“Sometimes you make a really good movie and you have trouble connecting with a broad audience,” said Chris Aronson, Fox’s head of domestic distribution. The only competition of the PG front in coming weeks is “The...

An old-fashioned streak of adventure runs throughout The Kid Who Would Be King, a riff on the King Arthur legend gussied up for modern times. It’s a decent enough family film, largely dependent on the charm of its young cast, that manages to be slightly disappointing only if you recognize the name of its writer/director. […]
