Deadliest Catch isn’t like other reality shows. Just ask longtime narrator Mike Rowe. He’s admitted that he didn’t know exactly what he was getting into when he agreed to work on the Discovery Channel series. But when a tragic disaster occurred while filming the first season, it brought home exactly how real this reality series was.
Mike Rowe recalled the ‘chaos’ of filming ‘Deadliest Catch’ Season 1 [L-r] Mike Rowe in 2007; The F/V Aleutian Lady | Paul Drinkwater/NBCU Photo Bank/NBCUniversal via Getty Images; Discovery Channel

“No one really understood what the show was back then, or what it would ultimately become,” he added. “Sometimes it felt like a reality show,...

Robert Kennedy Jr. has selected attorney Nicole Shanahan, a contributor to his campaign, as his running made.
Kennedy, who is running an independent campaign for the presidency, made the announcement at an event in Oakland today. CNN and Fox News carried Kennedy’s reveal of his pick; MSNBC reported on it later.
After being introduced by his wife, actress Cheryl Hines, Kennedy told supporters that he wanted someone “I wanted someone with a spiritual dimension, and compassion, and idealism, and above all a deep love of the United States of America.” He said that Shanahan was also a “brilliant scientist, technologist, a fierce warrior mom.”
In her speech, Shanahan said that she didn’t know much about Kennedy as of a year ago, expect for a “mainstream media narrative that was telling me horrible, disparaging things.” She said that a friend recommended that she listen to an interview with him,...

Shows like ‘Cake Boss’ and ‘Naked and Afraid’ will soon be disappearing from your PlayStation library, whether you paid for it or not.
One of the worst changes brought on by the streaming revolution is the lack of content ownership. Digital purchases are highly convenient, allowing users to have their favorite show or movie available on-demand anywhere. The flipside of this coin is that often, customers who “buy” a show or movie digitally don’t actually own that content permanently.
A long list of Warner Bros. Discovery shows are being removed from PlayStation Network and the libraries of users who paid for them. The list includes popular titles like “Cake Boss,” “Deadliest Catch,” “Mythbusters,” and many more. These series can still be viewed on Max or discovery+. 7-Day Free Trial $9.99+ / month Max via amazon.com

Twenty years ago, TV host Mike Rowe rolled up his sleeves for the pilot episode of Dirty Jobs, the Discovery series in which he delves into difficult, disgusting occupations. In that first episode — which aired on November 7, 2003 — Rowe collected bat guano for fertilizer, used mud to treat baseballs, and tried his hand gutting fish. Two decades later, Rowe is still traveling the world and getting his hands dirty. After leaving the Discovery lineup in 2012, Dirty Jobs made a comeback with a Rowe’d Trip spinoff series in 2020 and then returned for a ninth and tenth season last year. To celebrate Dirty Jobs’ 20th anniversary, here are some of the most gag-worthy segments from the docuseries. Cleaning the grime inside a water tower Once the workers drained the 150,000 gallons of water from this water tower, they set about pressure-washing the interior and sending the resulting sludge down 20 stories to the ground.

The recent conversation around artificial intelligence has made Fox Business’ “How America Works” host Mike Rowe revert to the “same old broken record” he’s been repeating for the past 20 years: learn a skill that’s in demand.
“It’s tough to get the poop back in the goose, especially with a thing like this. So yeah, I’m concerned, but I don’t really know what panic is going to do for the average person who’s looking at how is this going to impact my career, my life, my ability to provide for my family,” Rowe said while on a recent episode of “Fox and Friends.”
That’s when the former host of “Dirty Jobs” returned to the advice he’s been giving for decades. “Learn something that can’t be replaced with a robot or with artificial intelligence. Those jobs are screamingly open rights now — plumbers, steamfitters,...

Sony Pictures Television is adding to its roster of non-scripted production companies.
The studio’s non-fiction group has struck an overall deal with Unconventional Entertainment, the new label from former Lifetime exec Gena McCarthy.
It comes two years after A+E Networks veteran McCarthy left the company, where she was EVP and Head of Programming at Lifetime Unscripted and Head of Programming at Fyi. She was at the company for ten years, having previously been at Discovery Channel and weTV.
McCarthy’s company will develop and produce original formats across genres including relationships, home, food, survival, Americana, competition, and crime.
In her last gig she oversaw series such as Married At First Sight and was also responsible for Lifetime series including Project Runway and Dance Moms. She was also the original series exec producer of Dirty Jobs at Discovery and worked on Mythbusters and Deadliest Catch.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav raised the curtain on the combined Warner Bros. Discovery, kicking off the newly merged media giant’s upfront presentation Wednesday morning by declaring the company to be “the largest maker of motion picture and television content in the world.”
Kicking off the presentation at the Theater at Madison Square Garden, Zaslav admitted to the packed house that he was “a little nervous” to show off the company that closed its 43 billion transaction with AT&T just six weeks ago.
Zaslav detailed the combined company’s breadth of assets and its goal of being “a place for bold, impactful storytelling with the power to entertain, inform and when we’re at our best, inspire.”
He described himself as “humbled” by the leadership challenge ahead of him. He took time to call out three legendary media figures that he called “personal heroes”: famed cable pioneer and investor John Malone,...

Turns out the toughest part of rebooting Discovery’s gloriously grimy reality hit, Dirty Jobs, which sends host Mike Rowe out to apprentice with skilled laborers, is finding enough grubby new gigs for him. “The challenge now is not to get dirty and work hard; the challenge is to apply it to jobs that we haven’t done,” says the king of crud in his distinctive baritone voice, one that bounced off mine shafts, septic tanks, and other filthy surfaces during the series’ initial 2005 to 2012 run. (Credit: Discovery) With more than 170 episodes and the 2020 reunion series Dirty Jobs: Rowe’d Trip under his tool belt, Rowe felt now was the right time to hit the grit again because the global pandemic had put the spotlight on essential workers. It’s a group he champions with Mike Rowe Works, a foundation that promotes careers in the skilled trades and provides scholarships.

TV and podcast host Mike Rowe first became a public figure on the national level by getting dirty. On his Discovery Channel show Dirty Jobs, which first aired in 2003, Rowe would travel the country and profile workers who, well, got dirty.

Finance and politics aren’t the only things on the schedule at Fox Business Network.
The Fox Corp.-owned outlet, which in recent years has generated its biggest ratings for a show led by Lou Dobbs that burnished a distinctly right-leaning brand of politics, will in September stock the bulk of its primetime grid with documentary-style programming featuring hosts like Mike Rowe, country music star John Rich, Stuart Varney and Cheryl Casone. The shows will focus on people at work, real estate, and even home remodeling.
“We are thrilled to introduce a new engaging and inspirational primetime lineup focused on success stories across key American industries to our loyal viewers,” said Lauren Petterson, president of the network, in a prepared statement. The new schedule, known as “Fbn Prime,” will debut on September 20, meaning that the cable outlet will feature more original programming in primetime, rather than relying on repeats of...

With essential work in the news, it’s impossible not to think of ‘Dirty Jobs,’ and for the last year, people have asked me every day if the show would make a comeback,” Rowe told TheWrap. “Today, I’m happy to say the answer is yes. After eight years at NBCUniversal, most recently as Group SVP Communications, USA Network & Syfy, Katherine Nelson will be leaving the company at the end of the month.
Nelson’s departure was expected in light of the major restructuring of NBCUniversal TV and streaming operations last fall that left no suitable senior role for her and led to the exits of the top programming executives she worked closely with, Chris McCumber, Bill McGoldrick and Dawn Olmstead.
A seasoned and well respected PR executive, Nelson has served in her most recent role since 2016, overseeing communications for corporate, publicity, talent relations, events and awards for USA and Syfy. From 2017-2020, Nelson also oversaw communications and marketing for UCP. She led national publicity for all scripted and unscripted series and specials, and oversaw live and digital events, including screenings, festivals, press conferences, junkets, red carpets, TCA, Comic-Cons and more.

USA Network has picked up an eight-episode second season of its hit unscripted series Straight Up Steve Austin for premiere this summer.
Hosted by retired WWE legend “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, the interview-based series was 2019’s No. 1 new unscripted cable series for Men 18-49 and Men 25-54, according to Nielsen L+3. Can we get a “hell yeah”? USA Network has renewed interview series “Straight Up Steve Austin” for a second season, TheWrap has learned exclusively.
Season 2 will consist of eight half-hour episodes and is set to premiere in Summer 2020. “Straight Up Steve Austin” is produced by Line by Line Media. Retired WWE Superstar “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, a legend in the pro-wrestling world, and Dave Barsky (“Dirty Jobs”) are executive producers.
“Straight Up Steve Austin” was 2019’s highest-rated new unscripted cable series among men 18-49 and men 25-54, according to Nielsen’s Live + 3 Day ratings data. That metric counts 72 hours of (mostly) DVR viewing, and is a very common way of judging prerecorded entertainment series — especially on cable.

If it wins the latter prize it would be unprecedented because, perhaps surprisingly, no host of a non-competitive series has ever won the Emmy since the category was established in 2008.
When Best Reality Host was created in 2008 I thought it might be an opportunity for voters to honor the achievements of front-and-center hosts like Mike Rowe (“Dirty Jobs”), Ty Pennington (“Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”) and Cesar Milan (“Dog Whisperer”) who appeared throughout their shows. But the award turned out to be a de facto Best Game Show Host prize as it has only ever gone to the hosts of competitive programs: Jeff Probst for “Survivor” (2008-2011), Tom Bergeron for “Dancing with the Stars” (2012), Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn for “Project Runway” (2013), Jane Lynch for “Hollywood Game Night...

“Rescue 911” could be returning to the airwaves.
Variety has learned exclusively that a reboot of the classic series is currently in the works. However, unlike the original show, this new weekly, two-hour format would offer a live look at first responders taking real emergency calls every week. Original series host William Shatner would return to host the new series, with the veteran actor joining a panel made up of actual fire fighters, EMTs, and police personnel discussing the emergency calls in real time.
Shatner, Craig Piligian, Anthony Zuiker, and Jason Hervey will executive produce, with the latter three having created the reboot. CBS Television Studios is developing the project. No network is currently attached, but an individual with knowledge of the project says that it has generated significant interest in the marketplace already.
This marks a homecoming of sorts for Zuiker, who famously created the “CSI” franchise at CBS. Piligian...

“Deadliest Catch” star Blake Painter was found dead in his Astoria, Oreg. home May 25. He was 38.
Clatsop County Sheriff Tom Bergin confirmed Painter’s death to the Associated Press, stating that he was found when a friend grew concerned and visited the house after being unable to reach Painter.
Bergin said a cause of death would not be released until a toxicology report had been completed, but that there was no apparent evidence of foul play.
Painter found notoriety after appearing on early seasons of the Discovery Channel series, which follows the lives of fishermen in the Alaskan waters of the Bering Sea, paying particular attention to the hazardous nature of the job. An expert crab fisherman, Painter first made appearances on “Deadliest Catch” in 2006 during season 2, but chose to leave the series several episodes into the third season. He worked as an engineer aboard the the F/V Maverick before taking over the captaincy.

What do you get when you strap a full orchestra onto one of the most high octane rock operas in history? You get an instant classic.
Pete Townshend came roaring into New York City’s fabled Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center this weekend with the force of a thousand Gs Scooters as he delivered Classic Quadrophenia—an orchestral reimagining of the Who’s 1973 concept album. Though he contributed acoustic guitar to a handful of songs, the maestro mostly left it to the philharmonic ensemble lead by Robert Ziegler, who also conducted Rachel Fuller’s arrangements on the 2015 studio recording.

For months, we’ve awaited more information about the sort of shows Facebook plans to distribute as it elbows its way into the crowded world of original programming. Now, thanks to a report from Deadline, we have some new details. Facebook has greenlit Returning The Favor, which will star former TV host Mike Rowe, as well as a currently-untitled documentary series that will follow basketball player Lonzo Ball and his outspoken father Lavar.
Returning The Favor, which Rowe shared on his personal Facebook page, will continue to build its host’s reputation as a true blue-collar American with a passion sharing the stories of our society’s underappreciated citizens. He cultivated that image while spearheading the Discovery program Dirty Jobs, but this time, instead of trying his hand at unusual occupations, he will herald unsung heroes, including a motorcycle mechanic who works with veterans suffering from Ptsd.

You could spend $425 on so many things: a round-trip ticket to L.A. A fancy hotel room in the city of your choice. A designer pair of sunglasses. Or you could forget all that and pick up a pair of $425 Prps “Barracuda” jeans at Nordstrom, which come pre-coated in their own mud.
Not convinced? Allow the style description to explain: “Heavily distressed medium-blue denim jeans in a comfortable straight-leg fit embody rugged, Americana workwear that’s seen some hard-working action with a crackled, caked-on muddy coating that shows you’re not afraid to get down and dirty.”

Mike Rowe knows a lot about dirty and disgusting jobs, but it’s flag-burning college kids who have him feeling gross these days. The “Dirty Jobs” star wrote a 500-word Facebook post late Wednesday attacking students for recent protests in which they burned the American flag. Rowe had seen college students on cable TV news saying they were angry and fearful about the direction of the country. The TV star then added that many students at Hampshire College, an expensive school seized by protests in recent days, qualified for federal financial aid. These students, Rowe, whose Facebook page has nearly 4.4 million followers,...
