The 2024 Telluride Film Festival was a success on many fronts, delivering packed screenings (and commensurate turnaways) at the big titles booked in the popular venues, with smaller turnouts for docs and classic titles in the less-frequented theaters. Below, IndieWire lays out the festival hits, commercial breakouts, Oscar contenders, and distribution seekers.
Festival Holdovers
The Telluride movies that played best for audiences were already anointed with credibility from prior festival reviews and/or prizes. That includes Cannes prize-winners “Emilia Pérez”, “Anora”, “All We Imagine as Light”, and “The Seed of the Sacred Fig”, the banned Iranian film submitted for Oscar consideration by Germany. All will be strong Oscar contenders, assuming that “All We Imagine as Light” is submitted by India or France for Best International Film, which is not a foregone conclusion. From Sundance was secret screening “A Real Pain” (Searchlight), starring Kieran Culkin and writer/director Jesse Eisenberg, which played...

As I sat through the North American premiere of Pablo Larraín’s biopic of Maria Callas at the Telluride Film Festival, which stars Angelina Jolie as the famed opera singer, I couldn’t help but recall a line from Al Pacino in “The Godfather Part III” (1990): “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!”
It’s been an awfully long time since Jolie was contending for a statuette — her last acting nomination was for 2008’s “Changeling” and she’s spent the time since then starring in popcorn movies like”Salt” and “Maleficent” or directing films like “Unbroken.” But if you needed a reminder of what a formidable acting talent Jolie is, it’s on display in her transformative portrayal of one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century. It’s a chameleonic turn that can best be described as a a kind of cinematic possession.

According to the current combined predictions of Gold Derby users, Angelina Jolie (“Maria”) is in fourth place for Best Actress with 17/2 odds at this year’s Oscars. The movie itself just debuted at the Venice Film Festival, earning an eight-minute standing ovation. That could be a sign of how strong a force she’ll be in the upcoming awards season. If she goes all the way, it would be similar to the Oscars path of another recent Best Actress winner.

Spoiler Alert !!!Spoilers ahead for Changeling.
While her life off-screen has always been fodder for news stories, Angelina Jolie has always been a talented actress who could take on intense roles and deliver strong performances. The actress won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Girl, Interrupted, and was nominated multiple times for the Golden Globes.
One role that gave her both a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination was Clint Eastwood’s period drama, Changeling. However, Jolie was reportedly not too keen on playing the role as it dealt with a mother losing her child. Even after being convinced by Eastwood, she allegedly had a tough time coming home to her kids after the role.

Prior to getting romantically involved with Brad Pitt, and becoming a mother, Angelina Jolie was known to do wild things at times. Take for example her memorable pool dive after winning the 1999 Golden Globe Awards. Apparently, after winning the accolade, Jolie gleefully jumped into the Beverly Hilton pool, disregarding her designer dress.

One of the most famous women in the world, Angelina Jolie, started acting right out of high school. Despite her outward appearance, she has described herself as an awkward outsider at Beverly Hills High School, where she was teased because by her rich classmates. She lived with her mother in an apartment, and the family existed only on child support from her father actor Jon Voight, who had financial problems of his own. She later transferred to a different school and found her identity as what she describes as “a punk chick with tattoos.”
She began her career in a series of forgettable films (“Cyborg 2” anyone?) but then suddenly grabbed attention in the TV mini-series “George Wallace.” The series depicted the life of the title character, who was a controversial governor of Alabama and a presidential candidate. The films competing for the 2024 Best Production Design Oscar are “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.” Our odds currently indicate that “Barbie” (17/5) will be the winner, followed in order of likelihood by “Poor Things” (7/2), “Oppenheimer” (4/1), “Killers of the Flower Moon” (9/2), and “Napoleon” (9/2).
After 1970 and 2004, this is only the third year in Oscars history that the same five movies are nominated for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design. The two present lineups differ, however, in that none of the former’s individual contenders are past winners, constituting the first such instance in the category since 2009. In that case, the only returning nominees were art director Nathan Crowley (“The Dark Knight”) and set decorator Gary Fettis (“Changeling”).
Leading this year’s production design hopefuls in terms of total career nominations are “Barbie” duo Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer, who earned joint recognition for half a dozen earlier films.

Jeffrey Donovan will not be returning as Detective Cosgrove for Season 23 of “Law & Order,” Variety has confirmed.
According to TVLine, who was first to report the news, producers are already on the search for a new series regular. The outlet reports sources claim the two parted ways due to creative differences.
Donovan joined the cast in 2021, portraying Detective Cosgrove in Seasons 21 and 22 of the series revival. Cosgrove, a junior detective, joined the NYPD team as the new partner of Det. Kevin Bernard (Anthony Anderson). “Frank is a tough-as-nails detective that seeks justice by whatever means necessary. Every legal drama needs a bad cop, and Donovan shines,” reads his official character description, per NBC.
Probably best known for his leading work as former CIA operative Michael Westen on the USA series “Burn Notice” for seven seasons, Donovan also gained recognition with notable roles on FX’s “Fargo” and Hulu’s “Shut Eye.

Angelina Jolie has shared that she intentionally began taking on fewer roles in films in recent years.
In her recent Vogue cover story about her new fashion house, Atelier Jolie, the Oscar-winning actress opened up about her current phase in life and said she’s “still understanding who I am at 48.”
“I guess I’m in transition as a person,” she said. “I feel a bit down these days. I don’t feel like I’ve been myself for a decade, in a way, which I don’t want to get into.”
As Jolie works to figure out what’s most important to her and where she wants to focus her energy, she said Atelier Jolie has played a huge part. She revealed that’s especially true since she made the decision to start working on fewer movies about seven years ago and “only taking jobs that didn’t require long shoots.

Apple TV+ is back with a highly anticipated new series this September. The Changeling is a horror fantasy that might fill that Servant-shaped hole in your viewing schedule, but having watched all eight episodes of this thing, I reckon you’ll want to go into it with a little warning: it’s really, really good, until it isn’t.
The Changeling features acclaimed Judas and the Black Messiah star Lakeith Stanfield as Apollo Kagwa, who is a god. At least, that’s what he keeps telling us. It gets pretty annoying well before you start losing count of the times he’s said it, and it’s downright infuriating during one particular scene. The used book dealer had a pretty messed up childhood, though, which grants him a decent flow of empathy from us, even when he’s making our blood boil.

A tale about parenthood infused with a sense of mystery and fantasy Creator Kelly Marcel has focused on producing a genre-defining series with cultural commentary weaved into its structure.

Apple TV+ is launching the genre-blending The Changeling on September 8, 2023 with the release of the first three episodes. Oscar nominee Lakeith Stanfield leads the cast of what the streaming service describes as a fairytale for grown-ups, a horror story, and a parenthood fable.
Joining Stanfield (“Apollo Kagwa”) in the eight-episode series are Clark Backo (“Emmy”), Adina Porter (“Lillian Kagwa”), Samuel T. Herring (“William Wheeler”), Alexis Louder (“young Lillian”), and Jared Abrahamson (“Brian West”). Malcolm Barrett (“Patrice”) is featured as a special guest star.
Just ahead of its premiere, the drama based on Victor Lavalle’s bestselling novel sits at 75% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Huff Post’s Candice Frederick says “The Changeling is an extravagant genre offering about… well, many different things. Most profoundly, it’s about the natural horrors of life and death — as well as the stories we tell ourselves and those we love.”

Lakeith Stanfield has become a hot commodity in Hollywood over the last few years. The Oscar-nominated actor, 32, has had notable roles in everything from "Uncut Gems," "Get Out," and "Atlanta" to "Judas and the Black Messiah" and 2023's "The Haunted Mansion." So naturally, people have taken an interest in Stanfield's personal life, which includes being a father of three and a husband to his wife, model Kasmere Trice. The pair, who quietly wed in 2023, share one child together, whom they also welcomed this year.
Stanfield has two older daughters from previous relationships, though not much is known about them since the "Changeling" actor prefers to keep them away from the spotlight. However, he recently got candid about how fatherhood has changed him since expanding his family again. He told People in an interview published in July, "The connection with my kids is something unlike any I've ever had in my life.

J. Michael Straczynski is getting into business with Dark Horse Comics. Straczynski will launch various creator-owned work with the publisher that will span graphic novels, miniseries and ongoing series.
Straczynski is a veteran of the genre space. On TV, he created Babylon 5 and co-created Netflix’s Sense8 with The Wachowskis. In comics, he has penned runs on The Amazing Spider-Man, Superman and Captain America. And in the feature film space, he has worked on World War Z, Thor and Changeling.
According to Straczynski, Dark Horse boss Mike Richardson has given him the mandate to write whatever he wants.
“First up will be an international, geopolitical thriller that blends science fiction with the superhero genre in a way we really haven’t seen before. The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.
Night of the Demon
Not to be confused with the 1957 film of the same name (also on Screambox), 1980’s Night of the Demon is an unforgettable Bigfoot experience. It’s no surprise that the gory exploitation flick was prosecuted as a “video nasty” by the British Board of Film Classification upon its initial release. It’s best remembered for a scene in which Bigfoot rips off a guy’s manhood — and that’s not even the most outrageous death scene!
The cheesefest plays like an early slasher, but instead of a masked killer lurking in the woods, it’s a guy in a cheap gorilla costume.

Animation and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment – and it’s already finished and in the can! He said the release date will be “very soon”.

Angelina Jolie is used to being intimate with other actors in her films. But her Changeling co-star once decided to go off script when kissing the megastar, which resulted in Jolie giving a very surprising reaction.

Jolie has seen herself make out with several on-screen co-stars over the years, and they’ve all had varying reactions to locking lips with the Oscar-winner. Her Alexander cast-mate Val Kilmer was so excited about it he couldn’t help mention it in his book.
“I couldn’t wait to kiss Angie, buy her a Gulfstream jet and have a V+J painted in rainbow glory on the tail,” he wrote in his book I’m Your Huckleberry (via Yahoo).“She had recently adopted her first child, Maddox, and the paparazzi were obsessed with this postmodern Madonna, the...

Angelina Jolie’s love life was heavily affected after teaming up with Brad Pitt in Mr. and Mrs. Smith. But another film she starred in resonated with her in such a way that she credited it for her pregnancy.

Angelina Jolie experienced the joys of pregnancy after giving birth to her and Pitt’s first biological daughter Shiloh. Shiloh was born in 2006, many years after Jolie swore off a natural pregnancy.
“I never felt that it was the right thing to do,” she once said in an interview with W Magazine.
This changed because of Pitt, who convinced her otherwise with his actions. After giving birth to Shiloh, she and Pitt would also have another pair of biological children in Knox and Vivienne. Both times she embraced the pregnancy process that came with giving birth.

It would be difficult to understate just how enormous "Rawhide" was when it debuted in 1959. Directories of TV ratings at the time revealed that "Rawhide" remained in the top 30 most-watched TV shows from its start through its fifth season, peaking at number 6 in its third. The show ran for eight years, and its theme song — performed by Frankie Laine — has been branded into the brains of anyone who has heard it. "Keep them doggies movin'" will cause many to break into song. Notably, one of the lyrics was "Don't try to understand 'em. Just rope an' throw an' brand 'em. Soon we'll be living high and wide." For those weaned on reruns in the 1980s, "Rawhide" was often discussed in hushed tones by the older generations.
"Rawhide" followed the many adventures of cattle ranchers in the Old West. It was a working-class show about the salt-of-the-earth cowboys that formed the American foundation.

Angelina Jolie movies list is so loaded it’s hard to pick which is her very best and which are not so cool. My foolproof technique for doing this for any actor is to check what critics and audiences are saying across multiple channels. That’s exactly how I arrived at ranking Angelina Jolie’s movies from best to worst. In the end, you can hardly go wrong with the multiple award winning actress. Even the worst movies on the list feel somewhat watchable because of her graceful and charming personality. There are scarcely a handful of actors that come close to Jolie’s reputation.
This article highlights some of the best and worst movies on the Angelina Jolie movies list.

If you’ve been waiting to watch Christopher Nolan’s confounding sci-fi thriller “Tenet,” now is the time to finally get to it on your HBO Max watchlist. Nolan’s latest film is one of many movies leaving HBO Max in July, the full list of which you can read below.
Also leaving HBO and HBO Max this month is another Nolan classic, “Inception,” Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby,” as well as two rom-com favorites “Bridget Jones’s Diary” and “You’ve Got Mail.”
If you’re looking to prioritize some selections, “American Gigolo” was Richard Gere’s break-out role — and it would be a good time to watch ahead of the upcoming TV series starring Jon Bernthal.

Every summer, when the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invites new members, publicists scramble to update their lists. In the past seven years since #OscarsSoWhite, the Academy membership ranks have burgeoned dramatically, adding more young, diverse, and international members. As the Academy has sought to meet its diversity goals, the organization has swelled its ranks since 2015 from 6,446 to 10,665 total members (including Emeritus), if all the 2022 invitees accept membership, and the number of voting members to 9,665.
In the past two years, though, the pace has slowed, since the Academy met its goal of doubling the number of women and people of color in its membership. Instead of 819 new invites going out in 2020, the 2022 invites are just 397, a sign that the Academy is continuing to pull back on its 10 percent growth rate surge, and that the number of qualified experienced industry professionals has limits.

In 2008, "Babylon 5" creator and "Sense8" co-creator J. Michael Straczynski teamed up with director Clint Eastwood — Hollywood icon and chair-whisperer — and his fellow Oscar-winner Angelina Jolie to make "Changeling," a notable change of pace from the writer's sci-fi and superhero projects. Despite the heavy-hitters on both sides of the camera, however, the true story-inspired period drama was only a modest critical and box office success. Yet, if anything, its fact-based story of police corruption, systemic misogyny, and the failings of the U.S. mental healthcare system has only grown more relevant since it came out.

After dipping her toes into the film acting pool with appearances in “Machete Kills” and “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For,” pop superstar Lady Gaga took on her first starring part in 2018’s “A Star Is Born.” The following year, she became the first actress since Gabourey Sidibe to be recognized by the Screen Actors Guild for her debut headlining role. Having landed in the current Best Actress lineup as the star of “House of Gucci,” she has now made history as the only woman to earn SAG nominations for both of her first two lead film performances.
Gaga’s competitors in this year’s Best Actress race are Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”), Olivia Colman (“The Lost Daughter”), Jennifer Hudson (“Respect”), and Nicole Kidman (“Being the Ricardos”). First-time lead nominee Hudson is the group’s only past individual film acting champ, having prevailed as a supporting...
