Every American soldier has left Afghanistan, but that doesn’t mean Afghanistan has left them. Jon Shenk and Bonni Cohen’s heartfelt documentary gives new meaning to the term “forever war” by showing the lasting impact that multiple deployments have had on a trio of Navy SEALs still struggling to truly come home years after retiring from the military. “In Waves and War” — the title is taken from a passage in “The Odyssey” about moving on from suffering in order to embark on a new adventure — focuses on, and ultimately becomes part of, an emerging movement to treat post-traumatic stress disorder via two hallucinogens that have shown remarkable results when taken in tandem.

In keeping with annual tradition, The Hollywood Reporter’s executive editor (awards) Scott Feinberg and senior editor (film) Rebecca Keegan huddled at the end of this year’s Telluride Film Festival to discuss their Labor Day weekend in the Rockies. (Please note: THR will now be posting a written back-and-forth of this sort every month under the banner of ‘The Awards Pundits,’ with Feinberg, Keegan, deputy awards editor Beatrice Verhoeven and senior awards editor Steven Zeitchik all participating.)
Feinberg Not to sound like Saturday Night Live’s Stefon, but the 2024 edition of Telluride seemingly had everything — or, at least, everyone. There was fake Donald Trump (The Apprentice’s Sebastian Stan) and real Jack Smith (flanked by three Secret Service agents, the special counsel investigating Trump was here to support wife Katy Chevigny’s film The Easy Kind); a guy who made a movie about SNL (Saturday Night’s director Jason Reitman...

Conclave, the German filmmaker Edward Berger’s follow-up to his Oscar-celebrated interpretation of All Quiet on the Western Front, had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival’s Herzog Theatre on Friday night. And if my gut reaction to the film, and that of industry insiders with whom I consulted after it ended, are any indication, then an Oscar race that has heretofore looked awfully thin may well have found a new top-tier, across-the-board contender.
The film, which Peter Straughan adapted from Robert Harris’s 2016 novel about the aftermath of a pope’s sudden death and the chaotic succession process that followed it, is hard to describe. I suppose “dramatic thriller” is apt, although there are also moments of comedy and horror, with multiple crazy twists that should not be spoiled. Some are likening it to Dangerous Liaisons, others to the quirky films of Yorgos Lanthimos.

Anthony Mackie is the man who brought Falcon to life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and he certainly has a knack for some hilarious storytelling. During an appearance on a talk show, the star narrated the plot with his twisted version of the Avengers.

Anthony Mackie became a household name after he was introduced as Sam Wilson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He has garnered widespread appreciation for his role as Falcon and will also lead the upcoming 4th Captain America film. Interestingly, his journey in the MCU began after he was significantly disappointed to not receive an Oscar nomination for the critically acclaimed The Hurt Locker.

The recent years have not been kind to Ben Affleck and Jeremy Renner. After their fiercely successful respective Hollywood careers spanning 25+ years and each enjoying a spot at the peak, for such tragedy and misery to befall both actors within 2 years of each other is nearly unheard of.

For Ben Affleck, his misery pertains more to the romantic/personal aspect of his life, as reports of his second breakup and first divorce from Jennifer Lopez flood the internet exactly 2 years after the celebrity couple got hitched. For Jeremy Renner, his fate is a bit more tragic and much more deserving of the public’s undying sympathies.
And yet, beyond the haze of nightmarish accidents and déjà vu breakups, one thread ties both Oscar-worthy actors together under a single title: The Town.

Ralph Fiennes is a curious case at the Oscars. He has earned two nominations in his career, but they both came back in the ’90s for “Schindler’s List” (1993) and “The English Patient” (1996). What makes that so curious is that he never stopped appearing in Oscar movies, but he somehow wasn’t nominated for any of them over the next 27 years. This year, though, the combined predictions of Gold Derby users suggest that Fiennes will finally make the cut again for Best Actor for “Conclave.”
Let’s consider Fiennes’s impressive filmography since “The English Patient.” “The End of the Affair” (1999) earned co-star Julianne Moore an Oscar nom. “The Constant Gardener” (2005) won an Oscar for co-star Rachel Weisz. “In Bruges” (2008) contended for its original screenplay. “The Reader” (2008) won an Oscar for co-star Kate Winslet and was nominated for Best Picture. “The Hurt Locker” (2009) won Best Picture. “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (2014) was...

With three Academy Awards and some of the biggest box office champs of all time under his belt, James Cameron has certainly found a way to blend art and commerce to great effect. Let’s take a look back at all nine of his films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1954 in Ontario, Canada, Cameron cut his teeth with a variety of on-set jobs, most notably as a special effects artist. Although he technically made his directorial debut with the creature feature “Piranha II: The Spawning” (1982), he truly burst onto the scene with the sci-fi hit “The Terminator” (1982), which cast Arnold Schwarzenegger as a futuristic cyborg sent on a mission to kill a young woman (Linda Hamilton) before she can give birth to the messiah.
Cameron further cemented his reputation as a master of action with such adrenaline-pumping titles as “Aliens” (1986), “The Abyss” (1989), “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” (1991) and “True Lies...

Jeremy Renner, an actor who was a star even before he realized it, could display a range like no other. Catching his first big break with a hauntingly dark, disturbing, and traumatic lead in Dahmer (2002), Renner went on to bag 2 Oscar nominations for his roles in The Hurt Locker (2008) and The Town (2010). A year later, he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Since Thor (2011), Jeremy Renner has stayed within the comfortable safety net of his Avengers role until Taylor Sheridan made him an offer he couldn’t refuse, so to speak. The Oscar-nominated filmmaker’s directorial debut, Wind River (2017), struck a chord with the actor.
He later went on to collaborate with Sheridan in Mayor of Kingstown, a series that surpasses expectations and delivers a thrilling commentary on America’s prison-incarceration economy.

Last year, there was a massive uproar when “Barbie” filmmaker Greta Gerwig was left off of the Best Director lineup at the Oscars, despite the blockbuster movie reaping eight total nominations including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay (for Gerwig and Noah Baumbach). “Anatomy of a Fall” helmer Justine Triet, who won the prize for Best Original Screenplay, did wind up earning a directing bid, and it was only the ninth such time in Academy Awards history for a woman. So will the upcoming 2025 Oscars include any female Best Director nominees? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Oscar Experts.

When it comes to predicting the Oscar winner for Best Film Editing, you can’t go wrong by looking for the movie with the most cuts. Past winners “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2008), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016), “Ford v Ferrari” (2020), “Dune” (2022) and 2023’s champ “Everything Everywhere All at Once” included high-octane action sequences with frenetic cutting. A slew of winners — including “Saving Private Ryan” in 1999, “Black Hawk Down” (2002), “The Hurt Locker” (2010), “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017), “Dunkirk” (2018) and, to some extent, “Oppenheimer” (2024) — have been war pictures. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Film Editing.)
Oscar voters also embrace film editors who skillfully juggle multiple storylines, as was the case with “Traffic” (2001) and “Crash” (2006). And they like films that expertly inter-cut music with images, such as “Cabaret” (1973), “Chicago” (2003), “Whiplash” (2015), “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2019) and 2021 winner “Sound of Metal.” Special effects extravaganzas like “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004) and “Gravity...

From vampire noir to Bin Laden, Point Break to Detroit, the first woman to win an Oscar for best director has never pulled her punches
Watching new Jeff Nichols release The Bikeriders, starring Austin Butler and Tom Hardy as 60s Chicago greasers, I was reminded of two other movies: László Benedek’s 1953 Marlon Brando vehicle The Wild One, explicitly cited as an inspiration, and The Loveless, the 1981 feature debut of Kathryn Bigelow, the American film-maker (b.1951) who would go on to become the first woman to win a best director Oscar with her 2008 war drama The Hurt Locker.
A symphony of leather-clad posing (with just a touch of Kenneth Anger), The Loveless was a staple of the late-night circuit in the 80s, often on a double bill with David Lynch’s Eraserhead. “Inside Out 2” roared into cinema in June, becoming Pixar’s highest-grossing film in a debut weekend of all time, while its current worldwide haul at this time of writing stands at just over one billion.
The first movie — one of the most ingenious films of this century — took audiences inside the head of young Riley as she navigated a move to a new city while her emotions tried to guide her through the move in her head. This second film brings back those emotions as Riley goes through her teenage years. But Joy and Sadness and the gang have to deal with several new emotions in headquarters, including Anxiety, Embarrassment, and Ennui.
But while the film marches towards $1 billion at the box office, could it also be marching towards awards glory? Well, animated flicks don’t get the justice they deserve when it comes to the Academy Awards. So often,...

After numerous other roles, he got the opportunity of a lifetime after being cast in the MCU, making his debut with the 2011 movie Thor. He has been playing the character for more than a decade now but started branching out more after Avengers: Endgame. Now he is busy playing the role of Mike McLusky in the Paramount show, Mayor of Kingstown, and fans are just as impressed with him as ever.

Jeremy Renner discussed how the thought of returning to acting after a near-fatal accident 18 months ago left him “terrified” and shared how he now has little appetite for new, challenging acting roles as he is focused on his physical and mental recovery.
“I just don’t have the energy for it. I don’t have the fuel,” Renner told hosts Will Arnett, Jason Bateman and Sean Hayes on their Smartless podcast during an episode released Monday. “I have so much fuel to put into this reality, this body, all this stuff. I can’t just go play make-believe right now. Because that takes a lot of time to get right here every day just so I can, you know, have a positive thought, so I can progress, so I can always keep growing.”

Lowest Paid MCU Stars Ranked By Paycheck. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has delivered some of the highest-grossing films in recent history, with total worldwide box office revenue of $29.55 billion. It’s safe to say MCU actors have profited significantly from the franchise, with three movies ranked among the top ten highest-grossing films of all time.
While some actors have made out like bandits, securing a huge payday, others were less fortunate. While Robert Downey Junior and Gwyneth Paltrow secured a massive payday for their roles, the new Captain America Anthony Mackie and Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman were paid significantly less than their co-stars, leading multiple successful movies in the franchise.
Given the success of the franchise, it might be a surprise that some of the actors on their payroll received the lowest paychecks. Below, we have compiled a list of the lowest-paid MCU actors based...

Anthony Mackie is currently a leading star in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and his character, Sam Wilson, is set to play a major role in the franchise’s future. However, the movie that truly changed his career trajectory was Kathryn Bigelow’s Oscar-winning war film, The Hurt Locker. Mackie had a supporting role in the film, playing Sergeant Sanborn. However, he almost lost the role due to another “awful” director’s unreleased film.

Katheryn Bigelow will be getting back in the director’s chair for the first time since 2017’s historical drama Detroit. Bigelow was known for some beloved titles in the 90s, including Point Break and a movie that we’ve featured on a video about films that are hard to find — Strange Days. Bigelow reached new success when she directed The Hurt Locker in 2008, which would go on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. She would then follow that film up with Zero Dark Thirty. Deadline reports that not only is Bigelow directing a new film for Netflix, but she may lock down two stars for her film with Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson.
As of now, the roles that Elba and Ferguson are playing have not been disclosed. Neither has the plot or title of the upcoming film. According to Deadline, the only known detail of the movie...

Writer/director Rian Johnson has taken to social media to let us all know that filming has officially begun on his new film Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery – which, as you can glean from the title, is indeed the latest installment in the series of murder mysteries that Johnson began with Knives Out in 2019 and continued with Glass Onion (pictured above) in 2022. At the heart of these films is private investigator Benoit Blanc, played by Daniel Craig – and Johnson went ahead and shared a black and white image of Craig on set and in costume, bringing Benoit Blanc back to life on the first day of filming Wake Up Dead Man:

When the original Knives Out movie was released by Lionsgate in 2019, the whodunnit starring Daniel Craig as the southern P.E. Benoit Blanc, was either doomed to fail or become a smashing success. The latter happened, as the ensemble cast full of big names made Knives Out one of the best films of the year, ending up with numerous accolades and nominations, with many going so far as to claim that it had revived the whodunnit genre. The sequel, Glass Onion, was also well-received, but more because of its political and social messages than for the plot, which was more or less feeble and unworthy of the original. But, what is important is that Glass Onion also featured an ensemble cast, and it seems that the upcoming third movie, Wake Up Dead Man, will also follow in these footsteps.

Tyler James Williams is shifting through poses in front of a photographer when Anthony Mackie appears on set, voice booming, to poke some fun. He asks Williams to coach him on pursing his lips like he’s Trey Songz. During their conversation, Williams outlines his path from “Everybody Hates Chris,” where he played the 13-year-old title character, to starring as first-grade teacher Gregory Eddie on ABC’s hit sitcom “Abbott Elementary.” In exchange, Mackie explains how he played an amnesiac named John Doe in Peacock’s video game adaptation “Twisted Metal,” and what it was like to take his Marvel character, Falcon, from film to TV and back.

Jeremy Renner is an actor who came into limelight after a lot of struggle. Working as an extra, side characters, or being in music videos, it took some time before Renner became the household name he is today. But it would be wrong to say that he only gained commercial success, as his talent in acting even got him two Oscar nods in his career.
Jeremy Renner in Mayor of Kingstown [Credit: Paramount Network]In today’s time, he maybe known as Hawkeye, but Renner had a pretty solid filmography before the MCU snatched him up to become the bow-and-arrow wielding superhero. And even before that, he had the Bourne and Mission Impossible franchises to his name, where he made his mark as an action hero. But there is one label Renner dislikes being attached to his name.

A silent heroine, Canadian actress and author Evangeline Lilly managed to become popular despite never becoming part of the mainstream establishment. She made a name for herself in the series Lost and would later go on to achieve global fame by portraying Hope van Dyne in several MCU projects. Her performances have been praised on a regular basis, and her specific talent usually contributed to the quality of a project in a major way. Alongside the ones mentioned, she has also had memorable appearances in The Hurt Locker (2008), the sports drama Real Steel (2011), and in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit series, appearing in The Desolation of Smaug (2013) and The Battle of the Five Armies (2014) as Tauriel.
But, while a lot of fans have been looking forward to her new projects, we have some disappointing news for them, as the actress has announced her retirement from acting on her Instagram profile.

Nielsen, the long-time arbiter of ratings on traditional TV, is getting into the ad-supported streaming game.
The company has struck a deal with Lionsgate to provide measurement for the studio’s MovieSphere Fast channel. Both sides are touting the agreement as a first for a “major” Fast outlet as the free, ad-supported streaming market continues to grow.
“By bringing proven linear TV metrics to the Fast space, Nielsen is providing us with a valuable and innovative tool to benchmark performance, evaluate what’s working and respond quickly to our audiences,” said Jim Packer, president worldwide television distribution at Lionsgate. “This is potentially a very significant development where our team can leverage viewer reach, duration, frequency, concentration and other audience indicators to help us shape our branded, general entertainment channels to better return value for our partners.”

The Captain (Hoa Xuande) is our guide through both Viet Thanh Nguyen’s novel and the HBO limited series version of “The Sympathizer,” but he is also a mystery — most especially to himself. A communist spy who is pulled irresistibly towards the height of Western decadence (Los Angeles in the late ’70s) and depravity (a film set in the late ’70s), the goal of the show is to mirror Nguyen’s prose and give the viewer a visceral sense of The Captain’s alienation.
While the flashiest choice “The Sympathizer” makes is Robert Downey Jr. playing all the significant Western figures who attempt to influence The Captain, there are also smaller, subtler tortures within the show’s imagery itself. The cinematography (by “Decision To Leave” maestro Kim Ji-yong and “The Hurt Locker” veteran Barry Ackroyd) continually puts pressure on The Captain through a sense of heat, sickly light, and eyes just beyond the frame.

Iconic directors named David haven’t been having the best luck with the Netflix streaming service lately. David Lynch recently revealed that Snootworld, an animated movie he hopes to make, had been rejected by Netflix, and now David Cronenberg has said that his new film The Shrouds – which just made its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival (you can read some of the first reactions Here) – was originally intended to be a Netflix TV series, but the streamer dropped it after paying him to write the pilot episode.

He flew to Los Angeles to speak with two Netflix execs who financed the writing of a first episode – which they loved. But after the second, they did not want to go any further.” Cronenberg went on to say,...

Kathryn Bigelow was set to direct Aurora for Netflix, but that film got scrapped: now, though, she’s got another one.
Since Dan Lin was appointed as Netflix’s new film boss, we’ve all been waiting to see what kind of movies would be getting the green light at the Silicon Valley streaming outfit.
As of today, we have the very beginnings of an answer. Along with Happy Gilmore 2 – a sequel to Adam Sandler’s beloved 1996 comedy – it has also been announced that Kathryn Bigelow will be directing an as yet untitled thriller for the company.
Not much in the way of news has been released about the project but thanks to The Hollywood Reporter we do know this: the film will be focused ‘on a group of White House officials scrambling to deal with an incoming missile attack on the U.S. Sources say the story will...

After years of resisting any shift into live sports, Netflix has finally punted and will now stream two NFL games on Christmas Day beginning this year.
It’s a major coup for Netflix, even if the games are on a Wednesday — so get ready for Tbd announcers to read a lot of “Wednesday” promos. Netflix will also get at least one game around the holidays for both 2025 and 2026. There’s no way around it now: Netflix has live sports.
Netflix would never put it this way, but the money the streamer is spending on these games is something it would’ve previously spent elsewhere, perhaps on say…a movie?
Spencer Wang, Netflix’s VP of finance, investor relations, and corporate development, said at the Moffett Nathanson conference this morning that Netflix is spending on the NFL package about what it costs the streamer to make a mid-budget movie. Wang added...

Netflix has teamed up with Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow for a harrowing ticking-clock thriller.
The streamer has greenlit a film centered on a group of White House officials scrambling to deal with an incoming missile attack on the U.S.
Sources say the story will be told in real time and that its tone harkens back to Bigelow’s foreboding 2012 hit Zero Dark Thirty, which chronicled the hunt for Osama bin Laden and the Navy Seal mission to kill the terror leader.
Netflix wouldn’t confirm any details about the project, merely announcing an untitled Bigalow movie at their upfront presentation to advertisers in New York City on Wednesday.
The film — along with a Happy Gilmore sequel announced today — is the first movie greenlit by the streamer’s new film division head Dan Lin. However, the film’s development began during the division’s previous regime led by Scott Stuber,...

Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow has set her next feature film at Netflix. The streamer confirmed the project during its upfront presentation to advertisers on Wednesday afternoon in New York.
No title or plot details were revealed. The project marks Bigelow’s first feature since the 2017 police brutality period film “Detroit,” which was produced and distributed by Annapurna Pictures. Though that feature received positive reviews, it failed to capture the awards and commercial success of the director’s previous two works: the controversial 2012 CIA manhunt thriller “Zero Dark Thirty” and the acclaimed 2009 Iraq war feature “The Hurt Locker,” which won six categories at the 2010 Academy Awards including best picture. For “Hurt Locker,” Bigelow became the first woman ever to win the Oscar for best director.
Since “Detroit,” Bigelow has directed an Apple commercial and a short film. In March 2022, Netflix announced the filmmaker would helm an adaptation of screenwriter David Koepp’s disaster novel “Aurora,...
