Arrowhead Game Studios’ Helldivers 2 was a smash hit and is one of the most popular and successful game releases this year. The game has impressed fans and critics alike as it gets things right in almost every aspect that affects a game and its community.

“Clue” could soon be heading back to the screen.
Hasbro Entertainment has closed a deal with Sony’s TriStar Pictures and Sony Pictures Television for the film and TV rights for the beloved board game.
“Sony is the perfect partner to adapt a property as culturally impactful and mystery-defining as ‘Clue,'” said Hasbro Heads of Film and TV Zev Foreman and Gabriel Marano. “Nicole Brown, Katherine Pope, and their teams are tremendous creative collaborators and ideal partners to help us figure out after 75 years if it was Colonel Mustard in the conservatory with the candlestick.”
“Clue” has been a board game staple for nearly a century and has sold more than 150 million copies worldwide. The game sees players trying to determine who killed Mr. Boddy, with suspects ranging from Colonel Mustard to Miss Scarlett and weapons ranging from a lead pipe to a rope.

Sony is the latest player that would like to make an accusation. The studio has won the rights to develop a reimagining of the Hasbro board game “Clue,” and the studio intends to bring the murder mystery game to the screen for both film and television.
Hollywood has been trying to remake “Clue,” first adapted in Jonathan Lynn’s cult classic screwball comedy “Clue” from 1985, for years. Most recently, a project was set up at 20th Century Studios, and it had Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman circling to star along with “The Muppets Movie” filmmaker James Bobin directing. In 2022, Oren Uziel (“The Lost City”) stepped up to rewrite the original draft of the script from Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (“Deadpool”), but it too went nowhere.

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed is one of the most popular franchises, and fans often discuss which of the games are the best. This is hard as several titles have impressed players for various reasons. One main reason players like the game are the protagonists; and Ezio Auditore tops that chart.
Ezio is the most known Master Assassin in the series, and probably the games wouldn’t have been this successful if not for the protagonist. The recent appearance by Ezio Auditore in a new release has fans confused, especially about his outfit, which many don’t recognize.

Back in 2019, Hasbro acquired the entertainment company Entertainment One as part of a $4 billion all-cash transaction, aiming to become a major media contender by combining the company’s film and TV unit with their own. But the pandemic disrupted that plan, and now (according to The Hollywood Reporter) Hasbro is more interested in becoming a digital gaming powerhouse. So Lionsgate has been able to acquire “certain assets” of Entertainment One from Hasbro in a $500 million deal. Lionsgate forked over $375 million in cash, in addition to taking on production financing loans.
A press release lets us know that the acquisition “adds 6,500 film and television titles to Lionsgate’s library, one of the largest and most valuable in the world, diversifies and strengthens its scripted and unscripted television businesses, extends its portfolio of brands and franchises and expands its presence in Canada and the UK. eOne produces the hit ABC franchise The Rookie,...

Shows like “Yellowjackets,” “The Rookie,” and “Naked & Afraid” all have a new home. Lionsgate has officially closed its acquisition of film and TV studio Entertainment One (eOne) from Hasbro for a sum of $375 million in cash, Lionsgate announced on December 27.
That’ll help Lionsgate beef up its own film and TV library, as the studio now has ownership of eOne’s crop of over 6,500 films and shows. Lionsgate already has one of the most impressive standalone film and TV libraries around town — one that has made it attractive for an acquisition of its own — and this deal makes it now well in excess of 20,000 titles.
On the film side, you’ve got a couple of Best Picture winners like “Green Book” and “Spotlight,” as well as some awards darlings and hits like “1917,” “The Woman King,” “The Post,” “Molly’s Game,” “The Bfg,” “The Duke,” “Arrival,” “Booksmart,” “If Beale Street Could Talk,...

Lionsgate closed its $375 million acquisition of studio Entertainment One (eOne) from toy company Hasbro Wednesday.
The deal adds 6,500 film and television titles to Lionsgate’s existing library, including Showtime hit “Yellowjackets,” ABC’s “The Rookie” and Discovery’s “Naked & Afraid” franchise.
The sale is subject to purchase price adjustments, plus Lionsgate’s assumption of production financing loans for eOne projects.
In August, Lionsgate struck a deal to purchase eOne‘s TV and film operations from Hasbro for $500 million. The sale news came nearly four years to the date when Hasbro announced their intent to acquire eOne in a $3.8 billion deal in August 2019.
Earlier this month, Lionsgate laid off 10% of eOne’s workforce in preparation for the merger closing. Cuts previously hit eOne in June, when Hasbro reduced the studio’s staff by 20% amid its plan to sell the asset.

Lionsgate said today its acquisition of global entertainment platform eOne from Hasbro is done.
The transaction announced last August adds 6,500 film and television titles to Lionsgate’s large library; diversifies and strengthens its scripted and unscripted television businesses; extends its portfolio of brands and franchises; and expands its presence in Canada and the UK.
The deal is for $375 million in cash plus the assumption of some production financing loans.
EOne produces ABC hit franchise The Rookie, critically-acclaimed Showtime series Yellowjackets, and the long-running Discovery unscripted series Naked & Afraid. The library has 1917, Atomic Blonde, Green Book, Grey’s Anatomy, Criminal Minds, Renegade and Designated Survivor.
The transaction also includes film development rights to Hasbro’s Monopoly brand. Lionsgate knows that property well and had specifically carved out the film development rights as part of the overall deal. Hasbro plans to eliminate approximately 1,100 positions amid continued headwinds in the toy business.
In a memo to employees, CEO Chris Cocks said while the toymaker has seen some improvements due to a retooled supply chain and improved inventory, the market headwinds “have proven to be stronger and more persistent than planned.” The company had already laid off about 800 employees earlier this year.
“We anticipated the first three quarters to be challenging, particularly in Toys, where the market is coming off historic, pandemic-driven highs. As a long term fan of Magic: The Gathering, I have loved seeing the new “Universes Beyond” series that Wizards of the Coast has been promoting lately. With incredible IP’s like Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who and Warhammer 40,000 being introduced in casual formats, players who have never shown an interest in Magic: The Gathering before are suddenly much more keen to see what the hobby is all about.
One of the best ways to enjoy Magic: The Gathering (Mtg) is via a format like Commander which is a two to four player game that usually favours three or four players, and which lends itself to a very casual group rather than a more serious tournament format. Because it is casual, Commander games allow players to choose from wide varieties of cards that span years and even decades since the Mtg product line first launched. Specifically in relation...

Lionsgate has laid off 10% of Entertainment One’s (eOne) workforce ahead of the closing of the merger between the two companies, which is expected to be finalized the last week of December, a source tells Variety.
It should be noted that layoffs previously hit eOne in June, when then-parent company Hasbro reduced the studio’s staff by 20% amid its preparation to sell the asset — meaning this week’s cuts hit an already depleted group of employees.
In August, Lionsgate struck a deal to purchase eOne‘s TV and film operations from Hasbro for $500 million. The sale news came nearly four years to the date when Hasbro announced their intent to acquire eOne in a $3.8 billion deal in August 2019.

Hasbro’s sale of eOne’s film and TV business has received the necessary regulatory approvals and is on schedule to close by the end of the year.
As announced in August, Lionsgate is set to buy the assets for about $500 million — including a content library of close to 6,500 titles; active productions for non-Hasbro owned IP like The Rookie, Yellowjackets, and Naked and Afraid franchises; and the eOne unscripted business. The toy maker had acquired eOne, which also owns properties such as the Peppa Pig and Pj Masks kids series, for about $4 billion.
“The sale of eOne film and TV, which continues to be on track for an end of year close, will simplify our operating model and refocus Hasbro on our core mission,” said Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks. “Moving forward, our entertainment efforts will be franchise led and asset light focused on driving toy and game sales, with support from world class content partners.

In September 2018, newly installed Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz revamped the toy company’s Hollywood aspirations and launched a films division with plans to bring its toy franchises to the big screen in licensing and partnerships with studios after options had lapsed on big titles, including a Sony Pictures adaptation of Barbie with Anne Hathaway attached to star.
A year later, its rival, Hasbro, set its sights beyond licensing its big franchises (Dungeons and Dragons, Transformers, G.I. Joe): It wanted to become Marvel Studios and produce its own films, too. So Hasbro snapped up producer Entertainment One for $3.8 billion in August 2019 to cement those ambitions.
Fast-forward to this year and the diverging paths — Should you build and buy or license content? Do you go all in or let partners play a bigger role? — have played out for the toy companies, with Hasbro changing course toward Mattel’s playbook of licensing...

When Transformers became a big hit in 2006, Hasbro saw an opportunity to adapt other properties that lent itself to feature films. There had already been Transformers animated shows prior to the movie, so the company tried its hand at one of its most famous toy lines, which also had been a popular cartoon, G.I. Joe. While G.I. Joe didn’t quite do business like they hoped, as of this year, the seventh entry in the Transformers films has been released. Then came Barbie. And after the talk that Mattel is looking to capitalize on Barbie‘s big box office blowout, Hasbro is now looking to collect more than $200 on a Monopoly film adaptation.

This article contains minor spoilers for "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem."
I am a person of an age where I have never known a world without the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." The first issue of the comic book featuring the characters was released in 1984, a full six years before I was born. This meant I was the perfect age to watch the live-action films of the early 90s, with repeated rentals from my local video store. I also grew up watching the admittedly dreadful "Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation" live-action TV series, relegating me forever to the embarrassing Venus de Milo status in my childhood friend group, despite my last name being 4/5 of the pronunciation of an already existing turtle.
This is to say I have a great love and appreciation for the work of Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, the two men responsible for bringing Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello,...

No one should be surprised that Lionsgate announced the purchase of eOne’s film and TV business for $500 million — we all knew that was coming — but it is totally reasonable to be confused.
Lionsgate, which is already trying to sell its own studio, gets nearly 6,500 titles in the deal, including ongoing series like “Yellowjackets,” “The Rookie,” and “Naked and Afraid.” There’s also library content like “1917,” “Atomic Blonde,” “Green Book,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” and “Criminal Minds.”
We don’t yet have the full list of what stays with Hasbro and what goes to Lionsgate, but we know unscripted competition series “Play-Doh Squished” is part of the transaction, and that Lionsgate gets the rights for an upcoming Monopoly movie. Kevin Hart was once set to star in the planned film adaptation of the generations-spanning board game; IndieWire did not immediately get an answer to our question about his current involvement.

Lionsgate and Hasbro said on Thursday that they reached a deal for the media company to buy eOne, the toy giant’s film production company, for $500 million.
The deal includes $375 million in cash. The rest will involve Lionsgate assuming production financing loans for ongoing projects.
As part of the pact, Lionsgate also will acquire film development rights to Hasbro’s “Monopoly,” based on the enduring board game. Kevin Hart was cast to star in the film in 2019.
Wall Street was positive on the deal. Lionsgate shares edged up less than 1% in premarket trading, despite buyers typically seeing shares dip when a deal is announced. The stock closed at $7.98 Monday, up about 25% since the start of the year.
Hasbro shares rose about 2% in premarket trading after closing Wednesday at $64.37.

Even those with only a passing knowledge of Magic: The Gathering have probably heard about the Ccg’s reputation as a potentially expensive and often addictive hobby. While you don’t technically need to spend hundreds and hundreds (or thousands upon thousands) of dollars to play Mtg, dropping that amount of money on the game is still the surest way to quickly build a competitive collection of cards.
If the idea of spending thousands of dollars on a collection of cards seems wild to you, then you might want to sit down when I tell you that a single Mtg card valued at $2 million has finally found a (fairly famous) buyer. What’s really remarkable, though, is the increasingly popular suggestion that Mtg‘s $2 million card may only become more valuable from here.
The card in question is the “One Ring” card from the game’s recently released Lord of the Rings...

Christian Brantley is bringing his love of video game humor to a new tabletop game. Brantley, the animator who runs the CircleToonsHD YouTube channel, is the creative force behind Fool’s Blade, which is currently seeking $10,000 on Kickstarter.
Fool’s Blade combines elements of several popular tabletop games. It has the wit and whimsy of Munchkin, the dungeon-crawling milieu of traditional pen-and-paper RPGs, and a competitive setup reminiscent of Boss Monster. Players can combine sword parts to craft 30,000 unique weapons, help and betray one another at the tavern, and take on monsters to earn loot and progress on the path to victory.
The flavor of Fool’s Blade will draw from CircleToonsHD, where Brantley’s animations regularly satirize gaming logic. One of his most popular videos to date, with more than 13 million views to date, cracks jokes about overpowered RPG characters. But even though Brantley’s cartoons have earned him...

Toy company Hasbro said it will provide an update on the sale of eOne during its current second quarter, which typically runs through the end of June.
“The sale process for the eOne TV and film assets is ongoing and we expect to provide an update during the second quarter,” said Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks. “The global Hasbro team continues to execute our strategy to unlock the value of our rich IP library across our growth priorities including in gaming, direct-to-consumer and licensing.”
Hasbro acquired the Toronto-based studio in 2019, which houses most of its entertainment assets and announced its intention to sell it in mid-November 2022. That process was jump-started by eOne founder Darren Throop announcing he would finish out his employment contract and then leave the company at the end 2022.

Regular readers of Nerdly might recall that back in January we revealed that Steamforged Games – creators of Dark Souls: The Board Game and Resident Evil 3: The Board Game were about to release another videogame tie-in – this time based on Gears of War. This took me by surprise to be honest, since it’s been a few years since Gears of War 5 was released, and I honestly didn’t know whether people were still interested or not. Nonetheless, I love the Gears of War IP and Steamforged Games have a proven track record of taking videogame ideas and converting them into tabletop games. With all that said, let’s dive into the review for Gears of War: The Card Game.
Gears of War: The Card Game can be summarised as a campaign-driven, head to head card battling game that draws touches of inspiration from most games that look and feel...

When I wrote about a game called KeyForge a few years ago, I remember using words like “innovative” and “groundbreaking” and I also had to mention that games legendary designer; Richard Garfield. With credit for Magic: The Gathering (perhaps the most important collectible card game (Ccg) of all time) Garfield is a designer of true pedigree, and KeyForge was an AI-assisted concept that could have changed the landscape forever. As it happens, for reasons that don’t matter here, it didn’t… But clearly, the idea of using AI to assist game development is a concept that has stuck with Richard Garfield, and now he’s back with another ground-breaking new concept called SolForge Fusion.
SolForge Fusion takes the idea of semi-randomised decks which are seeded by a unique key, then printed in what the game refers to as “faction decks.” Each faction deck contains 30 cards, a Forgeborn leader, and...

(Welcome to Cardboard Cinema, an ongoing series where we look at board games inspired by or connected to our favorite media.)
One of the goals of our monthly Cardboard Cinema roundups is to help people bridge their love of tabletop games and Hollywood. Sometimes, that means shining a light on some of the best licensed adaptations on the market; other times, that means sharing more independent games that capture the spirit of our favorite franchise.
And while walking that line can sometimes be a little tricky, this week, we've got an excellent lineup of games for you to consider. From a high-profile "Monty Python" adaptation to an off-brand "Terminator" RPG, there are plenty of options for fans who like to live in other worlds or create their own. Exclusive: The next chapter of Descendants is coming to Disney+. The streaming service has given a green light to The Pocketwatch (working title), a music- and dance-filled original movie sequel to the megahit Descendants franchise.
Jennifer Phang is set to direct and co-executive produce from a script by Dan Frey and Russell Sommer (Magic: The Gathering). Production is scheduled to begin in the fall.
The Descendants movies unfurled an imaginative mythology of two new lands, idyllic Auradon and ragtag Isle of the Lost, home to the teenage progeny of Disney’s most iconic characters and notably, its most notorious villains. Per Disney, The Pocketwatch returns to these lands and also takes audiences through the rabbit hole to the hostile unincorporated territory of Wonderland, a magical, mysterious place made famous in Alice in Wonderland.
Seven new songs and Disney classic songs will advance the story, which introduces Red, the...

Flume and Caroline Polachek have shared an evocative music video for their recent collaboration, “Sirens.” The video, directed by Daniel Askill, sees Polachek floating in a cave in an ethereal white gown above a seemingly lifeless Flume.
“Sirens” was co-written and produced by Danny L. Harle and will appear on Flume’s forthcoming LP, Palaces, out May 20 via Future Classic and Transgressive.
“Caroline and I had known each other for years, but she’d just moved to L.A. and we bumped into each other living down the street,” Flume explained in a statement.
