The days of the old CW network are over. Last season, Nexstar took over running the smallest broadcast network and most of the network's remaining original scripted series came to a close. Nexstar is choosing to focus on airing inexpensive acquired programming and unscripted shows in order to make the network profitable. The CW shows depend on ratings more than ever before and have to earn their keep to stay on the air. How many shows will be cancelled or renewed during the 2023-24 season? Stay tuned.

The Emmy-nominated comedian and actress Nikki Glaser has been tapped to host the 82nd Annual Golden Globe Awards, which will air live January 5, 2025 for the second time on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
“I am absolutely thrilled to be hosting the Golden Globes.,” Glaser wrote in a statement. “It’s one of my favorite nights of television and now I get a front-row seat. The Golden Globes is not only a huge night for TV and film, but also for comedy. It’s one of the few times that show business not only allows, but encourages itself to be lovingly mocked (at least I hope so).. It’s an exciting, yet challenging gig because it’s live, unpredictable and in front of Hollywood’s biggest stars (who also might be getting wasted while seated next to their recent exes).”

The best week of comedian Nikki Glaser’s career — with her headline-dominating set at the roast of Tom Brady followed by the release of her new stand-up special — was not without unexpected surprises.
“Plopping down on the couch after that set was maybe the greatest feeling I’ll ever have in my life,” Glaser said to IndieWire about Netflix’s live Brady joke fest. “The amount of relief of nailing that when it’s live, when you’re on your period and you thought it ended, but it just started up again right before you walked onstage. And there were no tampons in the Kia Forum, so you had to use a folded-up napkin, and make yourself a pad, which is only being hung in place by a tiny strip of spandex on your thong that could fall out at any second. It’s an open secret that hosting an awards show is one of the most difficult jobs in Hollywood. If you do a poor job you’re criticized for weeks, but if you do it well, it’s barely a blip on the radar. Even though she is fully aware of the risks of the gig, hosting the Emmys or the Oscars is a job comedian and Emmy nominee Nikki Glaser wants.
“I think I would do a really good job, so I can’t wait to host something. I think it’s imminent,” Glaser told TheWrap.
The comedian, who is currently nominated for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) for her HBO standup special “Someday You’ll Die,” is no stranger to jobs that terrify other people. She pointed to her recent appearance on “The Roast of Tom Brady” as a recent example. Though she likened the Netflix special to her own personal Olympics,...

The Surprise Box Office Hit Last Weekend? A Pottery-Making Cat
It’s doubtful J.D. Vance bought a ticket, but the ninth annual CatVideoFest sold a record $281,000 worth of tickets during the Aug. 3 weekend, when it opened on 106 screens across the country, with such venues as L.A.’s Vidiots playing to sold-out crowds. “It’s our biggest opening ever,” purrs Will Braden, the Seattle-based videographer who’s been running the festival since 2016. “It was way bigger than we expected.” Indeed, when you crunch the data, the fest — which is really just a 75-minute compilation reel featuring Braden’s edits of the best online feline content of the past year, like YouTube sensation Momo, a cat who makes pottery on a pedal wheel — performed better per screen than some major releases, including Harold and the Purple Crayon and Fly Me to the Moon. Scare Tactics, the hidden camera horror comedy show, is coming back with Jordan Peele devising the pranks.
The show, which previously ran for five seasons and aired on NBCUniversal’s Syfy, has been greenlit by USA Network to launch later this fall.
Peele and his Monkeypaw Productions are producing alongside Universal Television Alternative Studios (Utas), the unscripted arm of the studio where the Get Out and Nope filmmaker has an overall TV deal.
Scare Tactics will turn unsuspecting individuals into the main characters of their very own horror movies. Set up by their friends and family, these unwitting participants are put in twisted scenarios with fully immersive stories that blur the lines of reality, horror and comedy as they navigate one unreal decision after another.
The series was originally produced by Scott Hallock, who is exec producing via his Wmti Productions, which owns the format. Peele, Win Rosenfeld and Jamal Watson executive produce for Monkeypaw.

A New York judge has dismissed a lawsuit against Warner Bros. Discovery from a producer, who claimed that he originated an idea for the premise behind HBO’s Fake Famous documentary and Max reality series FBoy Island.
The producer, Jack Piuggi, said he shopped a reality TV show titled Instafamous, which was pitched as “a documentary-style TV show incorporating an underlying faux-dating show competition” to “expose the superficiality” of Instagram dating culture.
His lawsuit, filed last year in New York district court, alleged that defendants, which include Good for You Productions LLC, Grand Street Media Inc., HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery, Inc., conspired against him to create “similarly themed” TV projects, which resulted in Fake Famous and FBoy Island.
Piuggi, whose banner is titled Flipp Productions, brought claims for copyright infringement, breach of contract and unjust enrichment.

Exclusive: Nikki Glaser is bringing the laughs to HBO.
The comedian’s latest comedy special, Nikki Glaser: Someday You’ll Die, has generated 2M cross-platform viewers since it premiered on May 11, according to Warner Bros. Discovery. The company also said the special had the best premiere night for an HBO comedy special in more than two years.
That just slightly outperforms her previous special, Good Clean Filth, which amassed 1.9M cross-platform viewers in the same timeframe from its own debut. That special was also nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award for Best Comedy Special.
Someday You’ll Die is currently pacing to have the top streaming audience for any comedy special in the history of Max (even before the name change).

Tom Brady was in the hot seat during his Netflix roast as he absorbed scathing jokes and remarks from comedians and former teammates.
Afterward, the seven-time Super Bowl winner revealed he regretted his decision after getting roasted and said he wouldn’t do it again.

The CW’s fall schedule includes a number of new unscripted series such as a game show night on Mondays with Trivial Pursuit and Scrabble as well as the return of Whose Line Is It Anyway?
But there was no room for one of the network’s longest-running hits, Penn & Teller: Fool Us.
Much like in scripted, The CW has a number of decisions to make and the return of the magic competition series is one of them.
The show has run for ten seasons and more than 150 episodes since launching 2011. Its tenth season premiered in October and recently wrapped a 20-episode order.
The CW President of Entertainment Brad Schwartz told Deadline that it has the fourth quarter “locked”. “If there is a new season of Penn & Teller, that’ll be top of 2025,” he said.

The CW met the Television Critics Assn. for the first time since its ownership and brand makeover — and both president Dennis Miller and entertainment president Brad Schwartz came armed with a message: The CW wants to be considered a “Big 5” network, right alongside ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox.

Exclusive: Christian Wikander, Banijay’s Global Head of Scripted, is exiting after a year in post.
A Banijay spokeswoman confirmed the departure and said the role will now be reviewed. When Wikander leaves next month, the current team will report temporarily to Chief Business Officer Frédéric Balmary, who was promoted last year.
Wikander replaced Lars Blomgren – who departed to head up Media Res International – in December 2022. Banijay owns more than 60 scripted labels around the world and the role involves tying these labels together, overseeing the scripted slate globally and identifying third-party acquisitions.
Banijay drama labels include Sas: Rogue Heroes maker Kudos, Netflix’s Supersex producer Groenlandia and Wallander indie Yellow Bird. Most recently, it acquired Help producer The Forge in the UK, where it has been particularly aggressive in the M&a space.
The spokeswoman said Banijay had “experienced significant growth in scripted driven by M&a and continued streamer investment” during Wikander’s tenure.
