If you were trying to set a land speed record for how fast you could shoot a film and put it in theaters, filmmakers James Mangold and Jason Reitman would be vying for that title this year. Both shot their respective movies, “A Complete Unknown” and “Saturday Night,” in March of this year and both films are coming out this year.

Charlize Theron returned to the Oscar race in 2020 with a Best Actress nomination for “Bombshell.” The Academy Award winner earned raves for her eerie embodiment of former Fox News host Megyn Kelly, but where does the role fall into the rest of her filmography? Tour through our photo gallery of Theron’s 15 greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Success came pretty quickly for the South African born actress. After one uncredited role in a horror film, Theron burst onto movie screens in the film “2 Days in the Valley.” That film launched her into a series of roles usually as the wife or girlfriend and ones that capitalized on her stunning beauty. That all changed in 2003 when she took on the role of Aileen Wuornos, a Florida prostitute who became a serial killer and was put to death for her crimes. The film won Theron the Oscar as Best Actress...

The super popular original webtoon Death of a Pop Star from creator Violet Karim is getting the adaptation treatment from Wattpad Webtoon Studios.
Death of a Pop Star is a global success, with over 33 million views worldwide. It regales readers with the story of a beloved pop star who suddenly dies and wakes up in Hell. Luckily for her, the Grim Reaper is a massive fan of Sophie's, and he gives her another chance at life on Earth, but that comes with dangerous consequences.
Oscar winner Diablo Cody and Oscar nominee Mason Novick, with Wattpad Webtoon Studios, are adapting the popular webcomic. Cam screenwriter Isa Mazzei will pen the script. As a fan of Cody's work and Mazzei's highly underrated 2018 movie Cam (now on Netflix), I'm very excited to see what these two come up with together.
Cody recently wrote the excellent horror-comedy film, Lisa Frankenstein and the Academy Award-winning film Juno.

Diablo Cody and Mason Novick are teaming with Wattpad Webtoon Studios to produce an adaptation of the popular Webtoon webcomic “Death of a Pop Star” as a film.
The script will be written by buzzy screenwriter and producer Isa Mazzei. Named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film, Mazzei is the writer and producer behind Blumhouse’s psychological horror film “Cam,” as well as producer of Neon’s 2022 eco-thriller “How to Blow Up A Pipeline.” Her first book, “Camgirl,” was selected as one of NPR’s favorite books, and her writing has also been featured in New York Magazine’s The Cut, Glamour Magazine, and Het Hem’s The Couch. She is currently in post-production on an adaptation of “Faces of Death” that she wrote and produced for Legendary Pictures.

Exclusive: Veteran producers Frida Torresblanco (Pan’s Labyrinth) and Frank Murray (First Reformed) have teamed up to launch Hangtime International Pictures, a new transatlantic production company headquartered in London and New York.
Backed by an eight-figure investment out of New York, the company will focus on developing and producing what London-based Murray and NYC-based Torresblanco described to us as “U.S. and regional content with global appeal.”
The partners told us they will work on high-end, specialist, and mainstream content across film, television, and documentaries in both English and Spanish. In addition to the US and Spain, Torresblanco and Murray told us they will prioritize producing content in other key markets, including the UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada, and Latam. The company is currently in the process of securing cash for an additional development fund.
“We are so very thankful to our backers for believing in our vision for Hangtime,” Murray told us.

The horror comedy Lisa Frankenstein (you can read our review Here), which came to us from director Zelda Williams (making her feature directorial debut) and screenwriter Diablo Cody, just reached theatres on February 9th… and it hasn’t exactly been a smash, drawing just $9 million at the domestic box office so far. Maybe now it will be able to draw in more viewers, as they’re going to have the chance to watch the movie in the comfort of their own homes: Universal Pictures has already given Lisa Frankenstein a digital release, and it’s available to watch through sites like Amazon.
Set in 1989, Lisa Frankenstein has the following synopsis: A coming of Rage love story from acclaimed writer Diablo Cody about a misunderstood teenager and her high school crush, who happens to be a handsome corpse. After a set of playfully horrific circumstances bring him back to life, the...

[Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for “Lisa Frankenstein,” “Jennifer’s Body,” and “Young Adult.”]
Sometimes rage is the only way for a woman to get what she wants — especially if she’s a teenage girl with nothing else on her side. And no one channels that rage into movies better than screenwriter Diablo Cody.
The latest Cody film has all the signature requirements behind the Oscar-winning screenwriter’s scripts: Billed by Focus Features as “a coming of Rage love story,” the teen-centric, not quite rom-com hinges on the sexual awakening and empowerment of a high school senior (Kathryn Newton) who seeks solace from a centuries-old corpse (Cole Sprouse) after grieving death and coping with an assault.
“Lisa Frankenstein” is just the most recent female-fronted original horror-dark comedy from Cody, who penned the iconic “Jennifer’s Body” and recently told Deadline that “Lisa Frankenstein” exists in the same universe as the Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried two-hander.

The Lisa Frankenstein brain trust of Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody and director Zelda Williams became one of the few silver linings of their pandemic experiences. Unbeknownst to Williams, the duo had a mutual friend in common, Cody’s boyfriend, and when Cody put the finishing touches on her outlandish rom-com script, her partner suggested that Lisa should be the feature-length debut of Williams. After all, she’d been cutting her teeth via TV, music videos and shorts since 2016, and she’s been an actor on sets since 1989, the very year that Lisa takes place.
The film chronicles Kathryn Newton’s grieving teenager, Lisa Swallows, who spends time comforting the dead in a creepy, unkempt cemetery. After a high school party gone wrong, she proceeds to make a graveyard wish that reanimates a once handsome young man from the Victorian era. The mute, partially resurrected corpse known as “the Creature” (Cole Sprouse...

One of Westwood’s historic movie theaters will soon have new ownership.
Filmmaker Jason Reitman is leading an unnamed group of investors in purchasing the art deco Fox Village Theater, located at 945 Broxton Ave. The news, first reported by The Ankler’s Peter Kiefer, was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter. Per the initial report, Reitman and crew are “weeks away” from taking over the property in a deal that is currently in escrow.
Last summer, reports surfaced that the landmarked Fox Village was up for grabs for a $12 million sum, listed by Newmark’s Capital Markets group, which promoted the theater as an “iconic property” and “one of the most identifiable, landmark properties in Los Angeles.” The listing also stated that the 24,099-square-foot building, which houses 1,375 seats inside the theater, had not previously been up for sale.

I was already sold on checking out the horror comedy Lisa Frankenstein, since it marks the feature directorial debut of Zelda Williams and was scripted by Diablo Cody, but now a clip from the film has arrived online to give me an even more positive outlook on the movie. The clip can be seen in the embed above, and what makes me so happy about it is the fact that the 1985 classic Day of the Dead, one of my favorite movies from one of my favorite filmmakers (George A. Romero) is quickly glimpsed on a television in this scene. A comedic creature chase follows, but it’s the glimpse of Day of the Dead that I really love about the clip.

Prime Video’s big February drop is Mr. & Mrs. Smith! No, not the 2005 Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie action movie, but a new TV series kinda based on it starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine. The set up for the show version? Glover and Erskine are two strangers who both get jobs at a shady spy agency and are asked to get married so that they can pretend to be a couple undercover, but things get more complicated when they start falling in love for real. Uh oh!

The horror comedy Lisa Frankenstein, which marks the feature directorial debut of Zelda Williams and was scripted by Diablo Cody, is set to receive a theatrical release on February 9, 2024, just in time for Valentine’s Day – and to help us pass the time until the movie reaches the big screen, a tie-in 8-bit game called Slay and Decay has arrived online. As described by Syfy Wire, this “delightfully retro and macabre” game allows players to “step into the shoes of 17-year-old Lisa Swallows and her rotting beau as they embark on an ’80s-era murder spree, hacking victims to pieces and evading the cops. If you can successfully outrun the law and make it to your tanning bed in time, you’ll end up with the high score. It’s really as simple as that!“

New York City? More like New York Chilly! Amirite?! The first trailer for the unfortunately titled "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" has arrived, and it's going to be a cool summer in the Big Apple, as a freezing paranormal threat suddenly invades the city.

One part “Edward Scissorhands,” one part “Poor Things,” a dash of “Jennifer’s Body,” add some sugar and spice, and everything is just as nice as young love for Diablo Cody’s latest, “Lisa Frankenstein.”
Kathryn Newton stars as a lonely high schooler who dreams up the perfect man…who has already lived (and died). With the help of a trusty tanning bed, she conjures up his corpse and reanimates him back to life. Sort of.
The official synopsis reads: A coming of Rage love story from acclaimed writer Diablo Cody about a misunderstood teenager (Newton) and her high school crush, who happens to be a handsome corpse (Cole Sprouse). Theatrical releases continue to be added to the 2024 calendar, which is a very good sign given that we still haven’t seen the shake-up yet from the prolonged SAG-AFTRA strike. Focus Features just dated the horror comedy, Lisa Frankenstein, which was written by Oscar winner Diablo Cody for a Feb. 9, 2024 opening.
Also hitting theaters on that weekend next year is Sony’s Blake Lively, Justin Baldoni film, Colleen Hoover’s It Ends With Us.

If anyone could have saved the studio comedy, it might have been Jennifer Lawrence. But if the uneven sex comedy “No Hard Feelings” is Hollywood’s best effort, it’s not looking good for either one. Starring Lawrence as a broadly sketched caricature of an emotionally stunted, sexually liberated thirtysomething struggling to stay afloat, “No Hard Feelings” tries to resurrect the messy white woman trope that worked so well in films like “Young Adult” and “Trainwreck.” Though by no means a guarantee, there’s a crucial difference between those movies and “No Hard Feelings” — actual women wrote them.
Though Lawrence, who is also an executive producer of the movie, is working overtime to make the stilted and over-the-top humor work, director Gene Stupnitsky (co-writing with John Phillips) seems far more interested in trying to invert conventional gendered comedy tropes. Lawrence dons skin-tight dresses soaked in water, takes a punch to...

Sources tell Deadline that Reitman is set to direct an untitled original screenplay for Sony based on the real-life accounts of the opening episode of Saturday Night Live. Reitman will reteam with his Ghostbusters: Afterlife co-scribe Gil Kenan to co-write the script.
The film will be set on October 11, 1975, where a ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers changed television forever. This is the true story of what happened that night behind the scenes in the moments leading up to the first SNL broadcast, retelling chaos and magic of a revolution that almost wasn’t, counting down the minutes in real time to the infamous words, “Live From New York, it’s Saturday Night.”

Actor Charlize Theron has often given performances in movies that are lauded by critics and fans alike. To do a film justice, the actor might apply different methods to prepare for different roles.
When it came to her and Patton Oswalt, Theron confided that alcohol was their method of choice to bring the best out of their scenes.

Young Adult was a 2011 dramatic comedy starring Charlize Theron as a successful writer who returns to her hometown after years in the city. The movie also featured actors like Patton Oswalt and Patrick Wilson playing her former hometown friends.
When she first received a script for the Jason Reitman-directed feature, the Oscar-winner was attracted to its uniquness. Theron believed the movie felt a lot more real than others in similar genres.

The Oscars don’t typically award bad acting performances. The worst of cinematic crime scenes feature talented stars trying to salvage what they can, from Viola Davis making the most out of The Help, to Colin Firth acting his royal socks off in The King’s Speech.
In truth, the Oscars tend to be more confusing than they are outright offensive. Many actors seem to win for the wrong performances (does anyone think Still Alice is Julianne Moore’s best work?), while interesting performances in provocative movies tend to be overlooked in favour of awarding more traditional Oscar bait.
It means that it’s far easier to curate a list of the most “what the hell?” wins than it is the truly bad ones. These are times when the victor seemed much less deserving than their fellow nominees, or when a juicy Oscar narrative overpowered the performance itself: Who hadn’t won in a while?...

Alison Brie plays a TV producer returning to her home town amid a midlife crisis in this oddly pitched and overly serious relationship drama
This stodgy relationship dramedy is directed by Dave Franco, who co-writes with his star (and wife) Alison Brie. I wonder if at some stage in the past one or both of them have seen Jason Reitman’s jet-black comedy Young Adult, scripted by Diablo Cody? There are some distinct similarities. The tone, however, is different: this is an odd combination of broad semi-satirical humour and deeply serious hugging and learning.
Brie plays Ally, a producer in LA who long ago abandoned her dream of making serious documentaries and now runs a silly TV reality show. When this gets humiliatingly cancelled by the network, Ally comes miserably back to her home town in a state of midlife crisis and discovers that she is still very much attracted...

Although “Somebody I Used To Know” takes some of its cues from “My Best Friend’s Wedding” and “Young Adult,” director Dave Franco’s feature blessedly doesn’t overly rely on its cinematic predecessors. He and co-writer Alison Brie deliver the goods in their own hilarious, heartrending story about an emotionally stunted woman who returns home and attempts to wreck her former beau’s current relationship. The romantic comedy genre’s broad, patented hijinks and hilarity are indeed on display, but cleverly cloaked by a beautifully-realized portrait of delicately faceted characters and their relatable conundrums.
TV producer Ally (Brie) is having a tough go at life. The dessert-themed reality show she poured all her time and talent into has been cancelled after three seasons, and she’s creatively blocked trying to come up with a hot new idea to sell. Her love life’s a mess and she has no friendships beyond her orange tabby cat.

Oscar winning actor, producer and philanthropist Charlize Theron has signed with CAA for representation in all areas.
Variety learned Saturday that Theron parted ways with longtime agency WME and that she and her Denver & Delilah production company will now be represented by CAA.
The change in representation comes as Theron prepares for a major 2023, with the release of “The Old Guard 2” for Netflix (which she also produced via Denver & Delilah) and “Fast X” for Universal, her third appearance in the “Fast & Furious” franchise. She most recently starred opposite Kerry Washington and Michelle Yeoh in Netflix’s “The School for Good and Evil,” and made splashy cameos on Amazon’s “The Boys” series and in Marvel Studios’ “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” playing Clea, a character which could have a lengthy future in the MCU.

Patton Oswalt is Ok with making you squirm. After all, the actor and comic once performed a number called “The Cringe” on an episode of “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” a title that could describe his approach to cracking people up.
“Real comedy comes from those moments,” Oswalt says. “I fully ascribe to Tracy Morgan’s maxim that ‘Cool is the enemy of funny.’ Cringe and awkwardness are real humanity, and that’s where the real funny stuff comes from.”
A comic’s comic adored by peers and audiences for wry, observational humor that often comes at his own expense, he’s also proven to be a skilled dramatic actor, recently playing Nixon’s hatchet man Charles Colson in the limited series “Gaslit.”
But his new film, “I Love My Dad,” ups the ante in discomfort while offering Oswalt a showcase role that is alternately hilarious and tragic. The film was written and directed by James Morosini,...

Patton Oswalt has delivered plenty of laughs over the years, whether it's on stand-up comedy stages or in memorable supporting roles in "Parks and Recreation," "Veep," and "King of Queens." But every now and then Oswalt gets the chance to shine on the big screen in films like "Young Adult" and "Big Fan," not to mention his pitch-perfect voice performance in "Ratatouille." However, you've never seen Oswalt quite so hilariously desperate and misguided as he is in the new comedy "I Love My Dad."

The call list for Hollywood’s Barbie movie has grown longer than the Mattel icon’s resume. Since news broke that Margot Robbie would produce and star in the upcoming flick, fans have wondered what a live-action version of the Malibu princess’ world will look like.
Back in 2019, at the premiere of “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Robbie explained why Barbie is a character worth bringing to life. “I think it’s a great opportunity to put some positivity out in the world and a chance to be aspirational for younger kids,” she told Variety’s Marc Malkin.
Directed by Greta Gerwig, from a script the “Little Women” and “Lady Bird” filmmaker co-wrote with Noah Baumbach, the movie is a co-production by Warner Bros., Mattel and Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment banner. However, further information about the film has been limited, with details of its plot fantastically wrapped in plastic.
