Jenni Olson's The Royal Road and Arthur Bressan Jr.’s Gay USA are both part of Mubi's Pride Unprejudiced collection. The series Awakenings: Three By Stephen Cone is playing on Mubi in many countries. The Royal RoadThe morning after Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party screened at the Castro Theatre as a part of Frameline 39 (San Francisco LGBT Festival), I sat, severely hungover, in the rear floor section of that historic theatre and watched a matinee screening of Jenni Olson’s The Royal Road, an intimate, 65-minute “essay film” about California, unrequited love, narrative and nostalgia that I would eventually come to consider one of the greatest of all films. Sleep-deprived and heart-pounding from dehydration, I had no business being out in public, but with each serene 16mm California image accompanied by Olson’s dryly humorous, reflective voice-over, I began to feel that, in fact, I had no business being anywhere else.

Following closing night festival screenings at Toronto and BFI Flare, director Justin Kelly’s Jt LeRoy opens in select Us cinemas, on demand and digital this Friday 26th April 2019. The compelling film chronicles the fascinating real life events that saw Savannah Knoop take on the public persona of celebrated author Jt Leroy, who was eventually revealed to be the creation and nom de plume of writer Laura Albert.
Whereas the 2016 documentary Author: The Jt Leroy Story focused largely on Albert, Kelly’s Jt LeRoy is based on the memoir Girl Boy Girl: How I Became Jt LeRoy by Savannah Knoop, who also co-wrote the screenplay, and recounts how events unfolded largely from their perspective. The film stars Laura Dern as Laura Albert and Kristen Stewart as Savannah Knoop, while the cast also features Courtney Love, Jim Sturgess and Diane Kruger.
James Kleinmann spoke exclusively to Justin Kelly and Savannah Knoop for HeyUGuys.

Premiering last fall at the Toronto International Film Festival, J.T. Leroy (then titled Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy) tells the true story as captured in Savannah Knoop’s 2008 memoir Girl Boy Girl: How I Became Jt LeRoy. Starring Kristen Stewart as the author who conned her way through the literary world under the titular fake persona, the film is directed by Justin Kelly (I Am Michael). Also starring Laura Dern, Jim Sturgess, Courtney Love, and Diane Kruger, the film will now arrive later this month and now the first trailer has landed.
Christopher Schobert praised Stewart, saying in his review, “It’s a stunning performance, one matched by the wondrous Laura Dern as Laura Albert, the author who created LeRoy and wrote his works. Jeremiah is bouncy and pleasing, if overfamiliar and never as insightful as one would hope. That is not necessarily the fault of director Justin Kelly, who co-wrote the film with Koop herself.

Exclusive: ICM Partners has signed filmmaker Justin Kelly, whose upcoming film Jt LeRoy starring Kristen Stewart and Laura Dern hits theaters in April.
Early on in his career, Kelly cut his teeth directing and editing music videos for artists such as Gossip, Hunx and his Punx and Tiny Hearts and working as an editor.
Kelly’s feature directorial debut I Am Michael, which he adapted from Benoit Denizet-Lewis’ New York Times Magazine article “My Ex-Gay Friend” followed the true-life story of Michael Glatze, a gay activist who became a Christian pastor after identifying himself as a heterosexual. Gus Van Sant executive produced the feature which starred James Franco, Zachary Quinto and Emma Roberts. The film went on to premiere at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and Berlinale.

Kristen Stewart’s young career is peppered with highs–most notably, Olivier Assayas’s Clouds of Sils Maria and Personal Shopper–but the actress has never been more natural, more unaffected, or as legitimately fascinating onscreen as she is in Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy. As Savannah Koop, the infamous “body” of nonexistent author Jt LeRoy, Stewart is vulnerable, funny, and wounded. Yet she’s also nonchalantly charismatic, showing how and why the sight of the quiet, bewigged LeRoy was so utterly enticing to a world craving for mystery.

Justin Kelly’s “Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy,” the closing-night film at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival, occupies a difficult slot at the mammoth festival. Tiff’s closing-night films typically don’t go on to enjoy significant commercial or critical success, more often destined for quick obscurity in the U.S. market.
Last year’s closing film, for instance, was the French comedy “C’est La Vie!” Before that, “The Edge of Seventeen” and “Mr. Right” at least made a little noise at the box office, “A Little Chaos” and “Life of Crime” less so.
But there’s good news and bad news for “Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy,” which stars Laura Dern and Kristen Stewart and had its first press screening on Monday in advance of Saturday’s closing-night gala.

The Jt Leroy saga is readymade for the movies, and two years ago it gave birth to Jeff Feuerzeig’s documentary “Author: The Jt Leroy Story.” That provided a fascinating overview of extensive scheme by Bay Area author Laura Albert, who wrote under the nom de plume of the fictional Leroy and gave him a backstory, hoodwinking fans all over the world by pretending that (s)he was a former teen prostitute with prodigal talent.
Albert pulled it off for years, pretending to be Leroy on the phone while sending her androgynous sister-in-law Savannah Knoop to play the character in public. But while “Author” explores the eccentric Albert’s identity crisis in her own words, it relegated Knoop to a supporting character. “Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy” is not the first movie to star indie darlings Kristen Stewart and Laura Dern, but it is the first one to feature them sharing the screen together. The two actresses appeared in different segments of Kelly Reichardt’s 2016 drama “Certain Women,” which became the filmmaker’s highest grossing movie to date thanks to their star power. Now Dern and Stewart have teamed up for “Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy,” world premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival next month.
“Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy” is the latest from writer-director Justin Kelly, the filmmaker behind “King Cobra” and “I Am Michael.” The film is a true story drama featuring Dern as Laura Albert, who became a literary sensation under the name Jt Leroy. Albert recruited her sister-in-law Savannah Knoop (Stewart) to play Leroy in public appearances.
The film is based on Knoop’s 2008 tell-all memoir “Girl Boy Girl: How I Became Jt Leroy.

It’s not always a great sign with a movie goes straight to digital, but nevertheless “Welcome The Stranger” has us intrigued. It’s not just the compelling leading trio that has caught our attention, but the film’s trailer — you’re not mishearing things, there is purposefully no dialogue, just the soundtrack.
Directed by Justin Kelly (“King Cobra,” “I Am Michael“), and starring Abbey Lee, Caleb Landry Jones and Riley Keough, the film is an eerie story about siblings, surreal visions and paranoia.

It’s clear from the start that something is not quite right in this first trailer for Justin Kelly’s (“I Am Michael,” “King Cobra”) latest outing, “Welcome the Stranger,” a twisty (and twisted) new thriller about the limits of family bonding. The film stars Caleb Landry Jones and Abbey Lee as estranged siblings who reunite at a remote country home, before everything devolves into an unsettling and dark drama in which nothing is actually as it seems. Added bonus: Riley Keough as Jones’ girlfriend, intriguingly billed as “strange.” Strange, how?
Per the film’s official synopsis, “Alice arrives unannounced at her estranged brother Ethan’s house in an attempt to reconcile, but bizarre visions, the return of his strange girlfriend, and Alice’s paranoia and suspicion force the siblings to cling onto reality amidst mysterious circumstances.”

It’s no secret James Franco is one of the most hate-him-or-love-him actors working in Hollywood. But even those who consider themselves fans don’t always show up to the countless indies he makes in any given year, from “Memoria” to “The Adderall Diaries,” “King Cobra” and directorial efforts “In Dubious Battle” and “The Sound and the Fury.” At this point there’s no denying Franco has talent, but he takes on so many middling projects and appears in what seems like everything to the point that it can be hard to remember why you loved him in the first place.
Fortunately, Franco looks like he’s ready to remind us why he belongs in the business. It’s happened before — his Oscar-nomianted lead performance in “127 Hours,” his go-for-broke turn in “Spring Breakers” and...

Yes, we know: It’s a little premature to assemble a list of the best movies of the year when there’s so much left of it. We have yet to see a lot of exciting new work from major auteurs like Christopher Nolan (“Dunkirk”), Alexander Payne (“Downsizing”), and Guillermo del Toro (“The Shape of Water”), not to mention heavy-hitting studio-produced spectacles like “Blade Runner 2049” and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.” But those last two wouldn’t even qualify for this list of the best independent films of the year, anyway, and they’ll have plenty of time to hog the spotlight.
Fortunately, we’ve found plenty of movies from around the world to celebrate, and while they haven’t all been box office sensations, they provide overwhelming evidence that the art form is thriving well into the second decade of the new millennium, and shows no signs of slowing down.

It may seem like there are only certain times of the year when the movies are worth watching, but the reality is that quality cinema hits theaters and VOD platforms all year round. We haven’t reached the halfway mark in 2017 yet, there are already dozens of quality new releases, many of which will continue to deserve singling out by the end of the year. IndieWire’s film team has seen a lot of them. The following ranked list was developed out of the aggregate scores from top 10 lists contributed by film writers in New York and Los Angeles. In order to qualify, a movie must have either received a theatrical release in 2017 or become available on a VOD platform during that time. Movies that received awards-qualifying runs in 2016 do not count. In many cases, multiple films tied for votes and are designated as such.

With their pulpy, entertaining sci-fi film Life now in theaters, star Jake Gyllenhaal and director Daniel Espinosa are already set to re-team for another cinematic outing. According to The Tracking Board, the pair are set to adapt an article by Rolling Stone about a group of Americans who fight alongside the Ypg against Isis. Titled The Anarchists vs Isis, Gyllenhaal will lead the project, along as joining the film as a producer. Espinosa is set to direct and they are still on the hunt for a writer to adapt the article, hopefully one that adapts such a recent set of events in compelling form.

It’s frustrating when powerful dramas fail to earn major Oscar nominations and thus risk being drowned out of the conversation of movies you absolutely need to see. Jeff Nichols’ “Loving” seems to be one of those movies this year. An extraordinary true story told with the humanity and restraint it deserves, it takes what could have been an awards-baiting biopic and turns it into a soulful study of two gentle-hearted people whose love defied the law and changed history.
Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton excel in the roles of Mildred and Richard Loving, whose fight to remain married led to the 1967 U.S. Supreme Court decision that struck down laws prohibiting interracial marriage. ‘The Eagle Huntress’ is a Rousing Feminist Adventure Every Family Needs to See — IndieWire On Demand

It can be hard to find a good documentary to watch with the whole family. Oscar contenders like “13th,” “I Am Not Your Negro” and “Oj: Made in America” are essential viewing, but they’re not necessarily the best fit for young children. That’s where “The Eagle Huntress” comes in, Otto Bell’s inspirational and rousing documentary about a young girl who does whatever it takes to make dream come true.
“The Eagle Huntress” follows 13-year-old Aisholpan, a Kazakh kid with one main aspiration — to be an eagle huntress. It may sound like a simple enough request, but Aisholpan’s big dream (alongside another desire to become a doctor) isn’t a common one. In fact, she’d be the very first of her kind, at least in her eagle-hunting-crazed region.

It’s been a long time coming for Justin Kelly’s “I Am Michael.” The drama, starring James Franco, Zachary Quinto and Emma Roberts, premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, where it earned a rave review from IndieWire’s own Eric Kohn but failed to find a distributor for well over a year. Fortunately, Brainstorm Media has finally released the drama in theaters and VOD, and it’s a powerful true story that well worth seeking out.
Franco stars as Michael Glatze, a former gay activist and co-founder of the Young Gay America magazine who eventually denounced homosexuality. Quinto plays Glatze’s former boyfriend, while Roberts stars as a young Christian woman Glatze falls for during his religious reawakening.

In the global furor over President Donald Trump’s ban on Muslims entering the United States, Asghar Farhadi’s Iranian Oscar nominee “The Salesman” (Cohen Media) opened to strong numbers in New York and Los Angeles. This drama had the best initial limited subtitled release in several years, bettering several films that won the Foreign Language Oscar. Among the rest, Weinstein’s “Lion” is performing best, with over $2 million in 575 theaters.

Justin Kelly’s “I Am Michael” attempts to understand change: why people change, how it happens, if it is really possible. As to the last question, the film doesn’t quite lay down a definitive yes or no answer — just that people make the choices that they do, and have to continue down whatever path that presents. James Franco stars as Michael Glatze, a former gay activist and magazine editor, who in 2007, announced that he was giving up the gay lifestyle and turning to Christ.

The first two minutes of Justin Kelly’s “I Am Michael” boil down the film’s ideological tension to one brief conversation. The titular character, an aspiring pastor, is counseling a distraught young gay man who’s unable to reconcile his religious beliefs with his sexuality. “‘Gay’ doesn’t exist,” the counselor says. “It’s a false identity.” The kid responds, “This isn’t my choice. Why would I choose this?” And then comes the gut-punch line: “If you’re a moral person, then you’ll choose heterosexuality in order to be with God.” The film then bounces back 10 years,...

“I’ve always been proud of who I am -- I came out to my family when I was 17 -- but the movie, that process did awaken something in me,” Charlie Carver, who came out publicly last January, tells Et about making I Am Michael, a new biopic about Michael Glatze, a prominent gay activist who renounced his homosexuality and turned to religion. Directed by Justin Kelly (King Cobra) and based on Benoit Denizet-Lewis' New York Times Magazine article “My Ex-Gay Friend,” the new film sees Carver portraying Tyler, a college student involved in a throuple with Michael (James Franco) and Bennett (Zachary Quinto).
One-half of the Carver twins -- his identical twin brother being Max -- the two are most famous for their joint roles on Desperate Housewives, Teen Wolf and most recently, season one of HBO’s The Leftovers. “I’ve always considered myself very lucky to work with my brother,” Carver says, explaining...

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
American Pastoral (Ewan McGregor)
If my limited experience with Philip Roth adaptations is any indication, his novels deal in emotion. There are existential crises concerning identity involved, each a character study about life’s impact beyond the surface experiences propelling them forward. This isn’t something easily translated from page to screen when so much consists of internalized motivation. You must really look into the text, ignoring plot to...

Documentary director Evgeny Afineevsky earned an Oscar nomination for his 2015 film Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom. He returns two years later with Cries from Syria, which premiered this week at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. The film’s editor, Aaron I. Butler, spoke with Filmmaker before the festival about how he and Afineevsky sought to tell this difficult story. Among many issues, Butler discusses the fine line between crafting an honest portrayal of Syria and showing images too brutal for audiences to handle. Butler’s previous editing credits include The Sixties, I Am Michael and In Dubious Battle. Filmmaker: How and why did you wind up […]...

Michael Glatze – the titular “Michael” of I Am Michael – rocked the Lgbt community with both positive influence and negative poison (a life story that he sold for $75K). His pursuit of purity is what drives Justin Kelly’s biographical drama, playing out an age-old war between religion and homosexuality. An old-school journey through acceptance, everlasting scorn and homosexual damnation with extreme responses to holy turmoil, still socially relevant for openly gay individuals in today’s far-more accepting world. Kelly wants to speak to broader audiences, and he accomplishes just that – but with such an extreme example, are the messages received by all open ears?

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
As per my Thursday update, M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller Split ended up winning the weekend but with way more than anyone, including myself, predicted, with more than $40 million for its opening weekend. That’s pretty impressive, and his first movie to open at that level since 2010’s The Last Airbender. Meanwhile, Vin Diesel’s sequel xXx: The Return of Xander Cage ended up making around where I predicted, taking second place with $20.1 million, not a great sign for the continuation of that franchise. Michael Keaton’s The Founder ended up right around where I predicted with $3.4 million, ending up just outside the Top 10. Hidden Figures, La La Land and Sing continued to do well with minimal drop-offs.

James Franco catches a lot of flack for his dilettantism, zipping from project to project, trying his hand at directing, writing, criticism, academia, and whatever else he gathers under the umbrella of “performance art.” But it’s Franco’s mercuriality that makes him the ideal person to play Michael Glatze. A real-life activist who switched sides—from running Lgbtq advocacy publications to becoming an outspoken “ex-gay” Christian—Glatze has gone through so many changes that it takes a chameleonic artist to do his life justice. It’s not enough just to repeat all the contradictory things Glatze has said over the years. To tell his story right, an actor has to believe them. All of them.

For every Sundance Film Festival movie that sells for a big sum, there’s another one that doesn’t.
While hordes of buyers scatter throughout Park City over the next week, a Sundance premiere from two years ago quietly hits theaters on January 27 with little fanfare. “I Am Michael,” Justin Kelly’s perceptive and troubling look at gay-activist-turned-Christian-pastor Michael Glatze (James Franco), hits theaters and VOD long after the Sundance hype has moved on. It’s a missed opportunity for the movie, in which Franco gives one his most complex performances, as audiences struggle alongside the character’s tragic sense of conflict with his faith.
At a divided moment in American history, it’s a shrewd look at conflicting values at the root of modern society. But no distributor took a gamble on it when its fleeting spotlight in Utah came and went; now, dumped onto digital platforms at the start of the year,...

Before we get to the new releases to see in January, our highest viewing recommendation would be to catch up on the 50 best films of 2016, many of which are expanding this month, including Paterson, 20th Century Women, Silence, and Toni Erdmann. When it comes to our January preview, we’ve also included a few 2016 films that had one-week qualifying runs, but are now officially opening (and there are also a few to definitely avoid in that category). Check out the feature below and let us know what you are most looking forward to in the comments.

James Franco remains ever busy both in front of and behind the camera. His next project, which seems very much in his wheelhouse, is a fictionalized version of the making of Tommy Wiseau’s “The Room” called “The Masterpiece.” Franco both directs and stars in the adaptation of Greg Sestero’s book “The Disaster Artist,” and among the many others appearing in the film — like his brother Dave, Seth Rogen, Josh Hutcherson, Zac Efron, Hannibal Buress and Jacki Weaver — is Franco’s “Why Him?” co-star Bryan Cranston, who will play…Bryan Cranston.

James Franco recently signed on for double cinematic duty in The Deuce, where he’ll play twin porn impresarios for David Simon. But in Justin Kelly’s new film, I Am Michael, Franco will juggle multiple lives and beliefs while depicting a single man. That’s Michael Glatze, a former gay activist turned “ex-gay movement” poster boy. Franco stars as Glatze, who, at the outset of the trailer, appears to be very much in love with Bennett (Zachary Quinto), a fellow gay rights advocate. But, just as the real Glatze went on to denounce homosexuality and marry a woman (played here by Emma Roberts), I Am Michael delves into Glatze’s “conversion” to heterosexuality. (The real-life Glatze left the ex-gay movement, and apologized for some of the rhetoric he helped generate.)

James Franco is a lot of things, but consistent is not one of them. His performances, ranging from great to good to not-so-excellent, can be found in everything from blockbusters to indie projects, art displays to local book stores, college lectures and more intimate squares. His talents are widespread, certainly, if not always found. If festival reviews, as well as this first trailer, for the Lgbt drama I Am Michael provide the right indication, however, we might be looking at one of the highest points in Franco’s career to date.
Based on the true story of Michael Glatze (Franco), a prominent gay-rights activist and spokesperson for the homosexual community who was abruptly and shockingly “saved” by Christianity, I Am Michael made its premiere back at Sundance 2015. In 2011, Benoit Denizet-Lewis published an article in the New York Times Magazine entitled “My Ex-Gay Friend,” about Michael Glatze, a former gay activist and co-founder of the Young Gay America magazine who eventually denounced homosexuality after a health scare. Now, Justin Kelly’s new film “I Am Michael” tells Glatze’s story as he transforms from an openly gay man spouting queer theory to rejecting his whole personal identity. James Franco (“127 Hours”) stars as Glatze alongside Zachary Quinto (“Star Trek Beyond”) as Glatze’s former boyfriend and Emma Roberts (“Palo Alto”) as a young Christian woman who falls for Glatze. There was no way of seeing one of James Franco‘s best performances of the last few years, unless you caught it on its festival run back in 2015, but thanks to Brainstorm Media, one will get the chance soon. Recently picked up for a release next month, the first trailer for I Am Michael has now been released, which shows off the true story of Michael Glatze (Franco), a prominent figure in the homosexual community, who turned to Christianity.
I said in my review, “Sure to ignite many impassioned discussions, I Am Michael tackles complex issues of sexuality and faith with a balanced view. The directorial debut of Justin Kelly, a past collaborator with Gus Vant Sant (who produces here), the drama’s formal elements aren’t as compelling as the ideas it wrestles with, but it does make for one of James Franco‘s more accomplished and complicated performances.
