There’s a practice known as bibliomancy, where readers will open the Bible to a random page in the hopes that the passage they encounter will provide a needed answer to a dilemma. In Mike Leigh’s “Career Girls,” the collegiate heroines practice their own version, called “Miss Brontë, Miss Brontë,” wherein they ask a question and then open “Wuthering Heights” in search of counsel.
How the powerful and provocative “Wuthering Heights” came to be the single novel produced by a relatively sheltered woman who died at the age of 30 is the subject of “Emily,” a powerful debut feature from actor and filmmaker Frances O’Connor. Craftily combining fact, fiction and conjecture, O’Connor captures the inner life of Emily Brontë, a writer presented here as carrying within her the same wind and storms that she immortalized on paper.

In the Academy’s Andrea Riseborough fracas, the loser is the actress herself. The respected 41-year-old British thespian earned an Oscar nomination for a lauded performance as a down-and-out alcoholic in scrappy indie “To Leslie” (Momentum Pictures), but her name will also be remembered for her association with the grassroots awards push that upended the traditional Oscar campaigning process.
While some champion the underdog success of “To Leslie,” others decry the methods deployed to achieve it. That’s why the Academy Board of Governors met on Zoom this week to discuss the process, a meeting attended by unhappy players such as Whoopi Goldberg, and Terilyn A. Shropshire.
Academy CEO Bill Kramer emerged with a quiet statement that while Riseborough could keep her nomination, campaign rules must be further updated and clarified. “We did discover social media and outreach campaigning tactics that caused concern,” he said. “These tactics are being addressed with the responsible parties directly.

Los Angeles, Jan 25 (Ians) The anticipated biopic of music legend Madonna is taking an indefinite holiday. The project, which the icon was going to direct herself, is no longer in development at Universal Pictures.
Speculation over the fate of the movie began instantly after Madonna announced a career-spanning world tour last week — one that sold out shows in New York, London, Paris and other cities in minutes, reports ‘Variety’.
Insiders familiar with Madonna said her sole focus is the tour, but she remains committed to making a film about her life one day.
While announced in 2020, development on the film lingered on through the end of 2022.
Madonna worked on two script drafts encompassing large periods of her creative and personal life. An earlier version was written with Oscar winner Diablo Cody (their writing sessions were widely disseminated on social media).
Erin Cressida Wilson took a second pass.

Madonna’s biopic about her own life, which the pop icon was expected to co-write and direct at Universal, is not moving forward at the studio and is no longer in development, IndieWire has learned.
Julia Garner was attached to star in the film as the “Like a Virgin” singer, but speculation that the film was on hold began when Madonna announced a world tour that will kick off in July. Madonna and Universal announced the project back in 2020, but development stalled last year. Diablo Cody was writing the script, with a revision by Erin Cressida Wilson. Madonna even shared images of her writing sessions alongside Cody after the project was announced.

Universal’s Madonna biopic – starring Julia Garner and directed by the singer herself – is not moving forward, a source with knowledge of the matter confirmed to TheWrap.
The news comes a week after the “Material Girl” singer announced a career-spanning, globe-trotting tour, raising speculation about the untitled film’s future. It has languished in development since 2020, when Madonna was set to direct and co-write with “Juno” scribe Diablo Cody. They completed the script in April 2021 despite rumors that Cody had exited the project, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Garner won the leading role in June 2022. The “Ozark” and “Inventing Anna” star was reportedly up against stars like Florence Pugh, Odessa Young, Alexa Demie, Sky Ferreira and Bebe Rexha during the months-long audition process.

“Tamar Braxton has been an incredibly important member of the We tv family for more than a decade, and our first concern is for her recovery and well-being. The Chicks — the band formerly known as The Dixie Chicks — weighed a few names before it agreed to drop the Southern reference “Dixie” from the band name, including some names like “Men” and “Puss ‘n Boots.”
If you’re wondering how in the world the band got from Dixie Chicks to “Men,” the band explained to Stephen Colbert on Thursday that the name is an acronym for their initials, Martie [Erwin], Emily [Strayer] and Natalie [Maines]. And names like “Puss ‘n Boots” or “Wooly Puddin'” would’ve been a throwback to some old “alter egos” the band once used, but another band already shared that name. You wouldn’t want another Lady A situation.
The band also addressed why it felt now was the time to change the band name.

This article contains spoilers for We Bare Bears: The Movie.
Back in 2016 just after the election of Donald Trump, We Bare Bears creator Daniel Chong posted a message about how the series is an allegory for what it feels like to be a minority in America. Many had questioned why the Bears in the series were treated so poorly and Chong answered, “as an Asian American, sometimes individuals are treated unfairly for no other reason than looking different.”
Chong admits that the allegory was “a little too heavy for an 11 minute (show.)” However, with the recent release of We Bare Bears: The Movie, Chong and the rest of the crew were finally given the time to tread deeper into what the show was really all about.

Considering that the show has done several references to K-pop in the past, Chong simply replied with, “i’ll see what I can do.”

Michelle McNamara was an American true crime author, who spent her nights investigating a rapist and killer who would evade authorities for decades: the Golden State Killer. Now, HBO’s “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark,” chronicles her search for the man as she wrote her book of the same name.
Liz Garbus directed episode 1 of the true-crime series, which debuted on HBO on Sunday. The first part chronicles how McNamara began her obsession with true-crime, and also how she met her husband, comedian Patton Oswalt, and how McNamara balanced family life with pursuing her passion of bringing the East Area Rapist, as he was first known, to justice.

America’s Last Little Italy: The Hill will debut online July 10th through 19th aspart of the 20th annual St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase. This historical documentary traces the roots of the venerable St. Louis neighborhood known as “The Hill.”. Check out the trailer:
America’s Last Little Italy: The Hill tells the story of this unique Italian-American neighborhood by looking at its past, present, and future. In the late 1800s, Italians immigrated to south St. Louis to work in the many clay mines there. These enterprising immigrants quickly took over the area and began to make it their own, building their own church, starting their own businesses and creating a self sufficient “city within a city.” The Hill has a vibrant athletic tradition, home to baseball royalty Yogi Berra and Joe Garagiola, and multiple players on the 1950 U.S. soccer team that defeated England in what is referred to by many as...

What We Do in the Shadows Season 2 Episode 10
In the What We Do in the Shadows season 2 finale, “Nouveau Théâtre des Vampires,” all the world’s a stage and the players merely vampires. It is a bittersweet ending to a strangely eventful and celebratory season, because parting is such sweet, though often salty, sorrow.
The first parting comes very early. Nandor the Relentless (Kayvan Novak) opens the episode in his coffin, a foreboding sign the episode will be a special event. The ancient vampire has to do it without any help because he wakes to find he was abandoned by his loyal familiar. Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) leaves with just a one-word note, “sorry.” But who cares, the Staten Island vampires are going to Nouveau Théâtre des Vampires, or Vampire Theater, as Colin Robinson puts it, g-damn it.

Dries expressed that she has “no interest” in the “Bury Your Gays” trope of killing off queer characters and vowed to “never erase” the lesbian character played by actress Ruby Rose in Season 1.

Black content led by black executives, black consultants. Are you policing our storytelling as well? Let us bring our darkness to the light.”
Protesting police brutality and racial injustice, he encouraged everyone to speak out and supported all those attending the protest, saying, “we have to be here together.”

A streaming Broadway-themed fundraising special scheduled to air on Sunday, June 7 – the night that originally had been set for the annual Tony Awards – has been postponed in the wake of national unrest over the police killing of George Floyd. “We stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter,” said an exec producer of the special.

In a normal year, the biggest film event in May would be the Cannes Film Festival. Now, summer has started with all of its prominent film events canceled or transformed, but Tribeca Enterprises and YouTube have found one way to keep programmers busy. We Are One: A Global Film Festival starts May 29 at YouTube.com/WeAreOne, and continues for 10 days with a slew of films and pre-recorded conversations from 21 festivals. The selections will stream for free on YouTube during their scheduled times.
Of course, it’s easy enough to get lost on YouTube, but the We Are One programming has enough reliable perspectives to make the exploration worthwhile: Participating festivals include Berlin, Cannes, Venice, Sundance, Toronto, New York, BFI London, Karlovy Vary, and Locarno. While only 13 of the 100 films are world premieres, the lineup provides a diverse window into different curatorial sensibilities, festival events, and filmmaker perspectives.

HBO Max, WarnerMedia’s long-awaited streaming service, launches Wednesday with hundreds of titles, including beloved TV series, blockbuster film franchises and some originals created specifically for the new platform.
And while we’re willing to bet you’ve heard classics like “Friends” and “The Big Bang Theory” are among the offerings that will be available at launch, we’re also pretty sure you don’t know how many other shows and movies you’ll have access to on Day 1.
And, as a bonus surprise, HBO announced all eight “Harry Potter” films as well as “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” will be available on launch day.

Adam Sandler and Netflix have found their next project, with indie breakout director Jeremiah Zagar at the helm. As announced by Netflix on Monday, “Hustle” will unite Sandler with the “We the Animals” filmmaker, with a script from Taylor Materne and Will Fetters, who was a screenwriter on 2018’s “A Star Is Born.” IndieWire has reached out to Netflix, which has confirmed that “Hustle” will be a comedy.
The film stars Sandler as an American basketball scout who is unjustly fired after discovering a once-in-a-lifetime player abroad, the scout decides to bring him to the States to prove that they both have what it takes to make it in the NBA. The film is the latest entry in Sandler’s ongoing pact with Netflix, both in front of and behind the camera, which has yielded such comedies as “Murder Mystery,” “The Ridiculous 6,” “The Do-Over,” and more, as well as...

It never was quite the same. While Community was given a brief reprieve from death when NBC cancelled the cult classic sitcom in 2014, the sixth and final season of Community on Yahoo Screen was not the same show. How could it be? While Season 5 featured Donald Glover for roughly half its length, season 6 would also say goodbye to Yvette Nicole Brown and much of the network TV budget that, even when diminished, gave creator Dan Harmon a lot of mileage for his high-concepts. Plus, there was the loss of Chevy Chase/Pierce Hawthorne… Yet the final season still featured most of the original cast and a go-for-broke sensibility. It’s something star Gillian Jacobs appreciated in 2015, and that she still treasures today.

Here’s a sentence even the most daring of cinephiles don’t often come across in official marketing materials: “What begins as an evening of strategizing on the proliferation of libertinage, descends into a Sadean night of pansexual one-upmanship.” And yet who else but filmmaker Albert Serra could craft a film that doesn’t just tease such a premise, but actually delivers on it.
The Catalan director’s latest film debuted at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, where it picked up a special jury prize in the Un Certain Regard section. In the months that followed, the film went on to play both Tiff and Nyff. Dripping with all the period details one would expect from the man who made “The Death of Louis Xiv,” Serra’s film follows a group of expelled libertines, tossed out of Louis XVI’s court and meant to find their own way, who...

This What We Do in the Shadows review contains spoilers.
What We Do in the Shadows Season 2 Episode 1
Good help is hard to find. It’s an eternal problem, and What We Do in the Shadows‘ season 2 premiere scours the want ads for unwanted undead fans. The Staten Island vampires closed last season by pissing off the Vampire Council by accidentally torching Baron Afanas (Doug Jones), and they need all the help they can get.
The series really finds its rhythm in season 2, both stylistically and uncharacteristically. “Resurrection” mainly focuses on Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) and Laszlo (Matt Berry) looking for their own familiar. For those just tuning in, a familiar basically does a vampires’ bidding, but is not necessarily like Renfield in Dracula. One of the best segments in the episode is an early montage showing the ultimately fatal mishaps which befell early applicants. It is pure cartoon slapstick only...

Star Trek: Picard brought back many familiar faces across its first season, melting fans’ hearts in the process. But, with the production team keen to prevent the show from being swallowed up by nostalgia, they limited the number of returning classic characters to a small handful. That said, all the signs are pointing to the future bringing back even more of the original cast of The Next Generation alongside Sir Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc.
We Got This Covered has heard from our sources – the same ones who’ve previously told us that Anson Mount’s Captain Pike is getting a spinoff, which has since been corroborated by another outlet – that CBS is trying to bring together all of the remaining Tng cast members and one that we’ve been told is definitely due for a comeback is LeVar Burton. A rash of 1980s-era satanic ritual killings puts Pastor John Henry Butler (Johnny Knoxville) front and center in rural America’s consciousness because his church is doing its very best to combat the disintegration of society with the word of God. Just as his increased television appearances rally the Bible Belt to his cause (treating rock music and other not quite “demonic” practices as sinful weapons destroying their children’s souls), however, they also work to embolden those he is forsaking. More than calling out the as yet unknown murderers for their crimes, he’s pointing fingers at a youth culture that already exists as a response to his mode of fear-mongering and idiotic censorship. So of course they’ll rebel further by running away to embrace their heavy metal lives more.
That’s the effect satanic panic had and what similar cases of adults turning their noses at the...

Today (April 4th) marks the 55th birthday of the Hollywood legend that is Mr. Robert Downey Jr. The actor’s been a major name in the business for decades, earning himself an Oscar nomination back in 1992 for Chaplin, but as we all know, his portrayal of Tony Stark in the McU is what lifted him to a phenomenal level of fame and acclaim.
He officially vacated the role of Iron Man, at least on a regular basis, in last year’s Avengers: Endgame, but all the birthday messages that Marvel fans have been sharing on social media today make clear that his contribution to the franchise will never be forgotten.
To begin with, fan artist Boss Logic shared this awesome piece to commemorate Downey’s big day.

We know that Andrew Lincoln’s due to return to The Walking Dead universe for a trilogy of theatrically-released movies, but we don’t currently know what these films will actually be about. The last time we saw Rick he was being ferried away from his loved ones by Anne/Jadis, after suffering a near-fatal injury. But where will he end up? And what mission could he undertake that would be so important as to keep him away from his family for years?
Well, we might now have a big clue as to the answer to these questions. We Got This Covered has heard from our sources – the same ones who told us a Transformers reboot was on the way, that Ahsoka Tano will appear in The Mandalorian and that the Guardians will cameo in Thor: Love and Thunder, all of which are now confirmed – what the focus of the Lincoln Twd movies will be.
