one of the most remarkable music videos of the 1980's
Now this is a very striking work. Firstly, there is the song. The music, which is quite good, can be easily understood and appreciated ; the lyrics, however, are both strong and elusive. There's an interesting, even compelling tale being told - but about whom or what ? I've read my share of interpretations and quite a lot of them point at a song about drug use. Secondly, there's the ballet, if that's the right word for it. This one reaches summits of alien surrealism, thanks to multitalented French choreographer Philippe Decouflé.
The ballet and the song seem to have little in common - unless, say, we're indeed talking about drug use, in which case the strange creatures on the screen might represent visions and hallucinations. Somehow the whole works, delivering a remarkable viewing and listening experience.
Anno 1987, Philippe Decouflé must have been very young. Yet at that time he had already developed his own individual style. I'm glad to say that he went on to have a long and multifaceted career, which includes the creation of one of the most striking Winter Olympics ceremonies ever devised. The imdb section devoted to Decouflé's work is sadly incomplete. If you like his work, do some extra research and check out bracingly weird offerings like "Abracadabra" and "Codex".
