Few actors have embodied the full range of modern German history on screen as has Christian Friedel.
In Jonathan Glazer’s Holocaust drama The Zone of Interest — a dark horse candidate for the best picture Oscar this Sunday (where it is also nominated in four other categories, including best international feature), Friedel plays Rudolf Höss, the notorious commandant of Auschwitz who, together with his wife Hedwig (played by Sandra Hüller), built an idyllic villa with a pretty garden for their five children right next to the death camp.
But before Zone, the 45-year-old German actor was best known for playing famed anti-Nazi resistance fighter Georg Elser in 13 Minutes, Oliver Hirschbiegel’s 2015 drama about Elsner’s attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler in 1939, before World War II and before the Holocaust. In 2012’s Closed Season, Friedel plays a young Jewish refugee hiding from the Nazis. And in his film debut, in...

Christian Friedel was overcome with shame. Days before playing Rudolf Höss, the commandant of Auschwitz concentration camp, in Jonathan Glazer’s film The Zone of Interest, the German actor chose to visit Auschwitz for the first time. And since he’d already been given an undercut, Friedel had to tuck his Nazi hairdo underneath a baseball cap whilst touring the site where his character oversaw the extermination of 1.1 million Jews.
“I was ashamed with this haircut,” Friedel tells Rolling Stone. “It was schizophrenic, in a way, because I was visiting...

Last July, we heard that production had wrapped on Hunt Club, a thriller starring Casper Van Dien (Starship Troopers), Mena Suvari (American Beauty), Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler), Maya Stojan (Newness), Will Peltz (13 Minutes), and Jessica Belkin (The Orville). Now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Hunt Club has secured a distribution deal with Uncork’d Entertainment – and along with that news comes the unveiling of a trailer, which you can watch in the embed above.
Directed by Elizabeth Blake-Thomas (The League of Legend Keepers: Shadows) from a script by David Lipper and John F. Saunders, Hunt Club puts its own twist on Richard Connell’s 1924 short story The Most Dangerous Game by telling the following story: A group of male hunters routinely lure women to their island with the chance to win 100K in a hunt, only to find that they are the hunted. The cause of death of Anne Heche has been revealed. The Hollywood Reporter, citing the official coroner’s report, reported the actress’ accidental death was a result of “inhalation and thermal injuries,” in addition to “sternal fracture due to blunt trauma.”
On August 5, the 53-year-old Heche crashed her car into a home in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Mar Vista. It took nearly 60 firefighters over an hour to extinguish the fire and remove Heche from the vehicle. Days later, it was announced Heche was in a coma and brain dead and thus legally dead by California standards. She remained on life support until her organs could be donated.
Heche’s most famous ex-partner, Ellen DeGeneres, tweeted: “This is a sad day. I’m sending Anne’s children, family and friends all of my love.”

Exclusive: Deadline has an exclusive track from Ariel Marx’s score for Candy, which is set for digital release via Lakeshore Records tomorrow.
The acclaimed limited series tells the true story of Candy Montgomery (Jessica Biel), a 1980 housewife and mother who did everything right—good husband, two kids, nice house, even the careful planning and execution of transgressions. But when the pressure of conformity builds within her, her actions scream for just a bit of freedom. With deadly results.
Known for crafting provocative soundscapes with both traditional and non-traditional instrumentation and performing techniques, Marx here created a distinctive series of backdrops ranging from brightly engaging to unnervingly dark, often within the same track. “Composing the score for ‘Candy’ was truly an incomparable dream. The show is deeply complex, and I was able to explore so many different aspects of these women’s lives with the score and palette,” says Marx,...

Disaster movies used to be fun. Back in the ’70s, they were filled with aging movie stars, many very much in need of a commercial hit, doing things like flying crippled planes, desperately attempting to rescue earthquake victims, swimming underwater in an upside-down ocean liner, and jumping off burning buildings.

"Are you sure this is the safest place to be?" Quiver Distribution has debuted an official trailer for a tornado movie titled 13 Minutes, a thriller from filmmaker Lindsay Gossling. Four families in a Heartland town are tested when a massive storm hits, giving them just 13 minutes to get to shelter before the largest tornado on record ravages the town completely, leaving them searching for their loved ones and fighting for their lives. Understanding the storm's effect on communities is what drove first time feature director Lindsay Gossling and certified storm chaser Travis Farncombe to write the story. "The threat in this film comes from the sky but the story is grounded in the real world. Every creative element has been designed to drop the viewer directly into a time and place that feels authentic so that they can live the experience of the world imploding with the characters." The movie stars Trace Adkins,...
