New HBO series Sharp Objects looks set to be the premium cable network's next sleeper hit.

The first trailer was released during the season 2 premiere of Westworld showing Amy Adams in the lead role of Camille Preaker, a journalist who must contend with dark events from her past when she reports on two homicides in her hometown.

Sharp Objects is an adaptation of Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn's best-seller, all eight episodes of which will be directed by Jean-Marc Vallée who oversaw last year's acclaimed series Big Little Lies.

Elizabeth Perkins, Madison Davenport, Chris Messina and Eliza Scanlen all co-star alongside Adams.

Flynn's Gone Girl was made into a box office hit starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike in the lead roles by filmmaker David Fincher in 2014. Her 2009 novel Dark Places received the big-screen treatment in 2015 with a film starring Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult.

Flynn will next oversee a remake of cult Channel 4 series Utopia for Amazon Prime.

Sharp Objects will air on HBO and Sky Atlantic in July.
