A man has been arrested by gardai investigating online threats made against Taoiseach Simon Harris.

Gardaí said they made the arrest on Sunday morning.

The man, aged in his 40s, is currently detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a garda station in the north western region.

Gardaí said it is not providing any further information at this time.

It follows the arrest of another man on Friday for threats made against the Taoiseach and his family.

The man, aged in his 50s, was arrested after a bomb threat was made to the home of Mr Harris while his wife and two young children were in the house.

Extensive searches were carried out in and around the Taoiseach's home but no devices were found and the incident was declared a sinister hoax.

Mr Harris has said that he will “never be deterred” and he does not believe it is acceptable that politicians have become “a regular target”.

He said it is on the brink of being “viewed as acceptable or a normal part of the job”.
