2 sisters, ages 12 and 7, raise $20,000 so veterans can experience Honor Flight
CINCINNATI (WXIX/Gray News) - Two sisters from Harrison, Ohio, are being praised after they raised more than $20,000 for veterans to take part in Honor Flight.
Tessa Ziegler, 12, and Raya Ziegler, 7, said this is their way of thanking veterans.
“We went to an Honor Flight when Raya was 1,” Tessa said. “One of my mom’s friends invited us, and we really liked it. We just wanted to get involved with it.”
Honor Flight Network flies about 22,500 veterans annually to Washington, D.C., to visit memorials that honor their service and sacrifice.
The sisters said they go to businesses, explain their project and ask if they’re willing to donate. Often they get gift cards or other items they can raffle as prizes to raise money. The sisters said one business that donated is their local Skyline Chili.
“We’ve been doing garage sales and yard sales,” Raya said. “We worked at our mom’s work on Veterans Day.”
“We sell raffle tickets. Like a couple weeks ago, we went to Rockin’ on the River and raised money there.” Tessa said.
Tessa said they do it “because we love our veterans.”
The next Honor Flight at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is on Sept. 17.
