List of damage continues to grow following Sunday’s severe storm

Several locations suffered serious damage during the story Sunday night

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - A powerful storm hit southern Arizona late Sunday, July 14, leading to power outages, damage, and swift-water rescues.

The 13 News weather team issued a First Alert Forecast ahead of the storm to warn our viewers.

Power Outages

As of 8 p.m. Monday, TEP said hundreds of customers were still without power.

At least 31,000 customers were in the dark during the worst part of the storm. You can check the status of the outages by going to https://www.tep.com/outages/

TEP said crews are out working 450 jobs requesting service but that list is expected to grow. TEP has set up an information page related to last night’s storm, which you can find here.

TEP said ice distribution centers have been set up for those who remain without power.

Those stations are:

  • Safeway, 2140 West Grant Road, near Silverbell.
  • Tucson Mall on the southeast corner by Macy’s

Damage

Downtown Tucson was smashed, with large trees ripped from the ground near the courthouse. Several roads in the area had to be closed for cleanup.

According to the Tucson Department of Tucson Department of Transportation & Mobility, westbound Congress had to be closed between Church Avenue and Granada Avenue because of the downed trees.

The Circle K on Congress, near Interstate 10, had its awning ripped off.

At Mission Palms Apartment Complex near Orange Grove and Oracle, there were several large trees went down on buildings and vehicles.

GAP Ministries said the storm caused significant damage to a building that houses essential equipment for their kitchen that is under construction.

GAP said the building also serves as the overflow area where volunteers assemble meals for the community.

“Just this past Saturday, 80 volunteers gathered in this space to prepare sandwiches for children and families in need,” GAP said in a release. “This facility plays a pivotal role in GAP Ministries’ ability to provide over 100,000 meals annually to those in need. The storm’s impact is a significant setback for the organization and the community it serves.”

It appears the county and federal courthouses in downtown Tucson also were damaged. 13 News crews came across the following.

A least one home at the Vista del Norte mobile home park, located in the 1000 block of East Limberlost, was destroyed when a tree fell and crushed it.

On Ina Road near Shannon, the same area that dealt with power poles down last week, there was a rollover crash and two large trees in the roadway. There were also a few power poles down.

Fiesta Lanes, located near River and Oracle, had a portion of its roof ripped off.

Swift-Water Rescues

The Tucson Fire Department said crews responded to no less than five swift-water rescues in a 30-minute period. At least two vehicles got stuck under the Interstate 10 underpass at Speedway.

The Northwest Fire District said it responded to two -- near Ina and Camino de la Tierra and one in the 3700 block of Horizon Hills, near Thornydale.

Dust Storm

There was even a dust storm in southern Arizona on Sunday.

13 News anchor was driving on Interstate 10 near Casa Grand when he shot this video.
