Shout-outs From My Colleagues

My sincere thanks to Danica and Karen who are two of the best collaborators! They worked with me to take a simple idea to set up a table on Citizen Science at NC State for the State of Sciences take-over event at Hunt Library and made it dynamic and fun for everyone who stopped by. Thanks to Danica and Karen, we had all kinds of citizen science tech lending on display for visitors to use (microscope, light sensors, sound sensors, macro lenses, and a rain gauge). Thanks to them, we had popular women in STEM and Citizen Science buttons, project idea handouts, and a super cool trail camera to raffle off. We even got to collaborate with 2 students from the Citizen Science Club! It was so much fun to meet all of the kids, families, students, faculty, and alumni who stopped by our table. It's always a good day when we have a chance to showcase how the Libraries integrates with teaching, research, and community engagement and it was made even better by being able to work with Danica and Karen.

The NIH extended its commitment to public access to NIH-funded research results which became mandated in late January 2023. Research administrators and researchers across NC State have been gearing up by learning the newly expanded requirements for research data management and sharing for NIH. And alongside them have been librarians from the Research Data, Sharing, Management, and Access (RDSMA) team. Members of this team contributed to calls for input by NIH as the NIH was preparing to expand their commitment to public access to research results. Members of RDSMA partnered with campus research leadership to develop outreach and guidance for researchers applying for NIH grants. When the newly expanded NIH policies were implemented in late January 2023, the RDSMA was ready to help researchers create and refine their NIH data management and sharing plans and figure out they best ways to share and preserve data. Along with the full RDSMA team, lots of credit to Bertha Chang (C&RS), Moira Downey (RFS), and Susan Ivey (RFS) who led the way. And a special note of appreciation to Danica Lewis (C&RS) who led the review of several draft data management and sharing plans by researchers seeking NIH grant funds since late January. I am grateful to these colleagues for collaborating across campus and for stepping up and supporting research excellence at NC State.

It is with great pleasure that I attempt to express my appreciation for Hillary Fox, Tisha Mentnech, and Danica Lewis, the three librarians who support researchers, faculty, and students in the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology.. I became familiar with these three professionals through one of their many outreach efforts to help inform us what fantastic services the NCSU Library System provides. The presentation on library services to research and teaching functions was excellent and exciting—outlining the many ways that our excellent library system can serve us as researchers, teachers, and mentors. Furthermore, the kind of guidance and wisdom that our three librarians provide us is a “guide in the wilderness” of new publications and “opportunities” about which we researchers are pathetically ignorant, among so much more.
