What is a Graduate Extension Assistantship (GEA)?

A Graduate Extension Assistant (GEA) serves in an extension, outreach and engagement capacity for their academic program providing instances of praxis of principles and skills for students from the College of Design, College of Arts and Sciences, and College of Humanities and Social Sciences to the Studiios spaces, and to the many people and groups the spaces serves.

  • NC State University Libraries iPearl Innovation Studio Graduate Extension Assistantship

    Since before its opening in 2020, the iPearl Innovation Studio has been sustained and enhanced by the contributions of graduate assistants from the College of Design. Knowing we would need design expertise and user-focused perspective to build and staff this new space, the Libraries partnered with the College in 2018 to create the Innovation Studio Graduate Extension Assistantship.

    Job Role:

    The GEA supports exhibit development and course collaborations in the iPearl Innovation Studio, working closely with library staff and campus partners. They manage and edit content (text, images, audio and video), draft layouts for our interactive projection tables, and help design and installing interactives. The GEA also produces assets such as handouts and digital signage, and provides regular classroom and event support for various collaborations. There is also room to explore emerging technologies and prototype new directions for the Studios.

    Details & Availability:

    • $16,650 ($8,325 per semester) stipend, paid out biweekly
    • Eligible for GSSP benefits, subject to approval by the Graduate School
    • 1-year appointment with potential to renew for a second year
    • Appointment follows the academic year (August to May)
    • 15 hour/week commitment during each semester
    • Additional opportunity to work for the Libraries in summer

    Open only to enrolled College of Design graduate students.

  • NC State University Libraries Studios Graduate Extension Assistantship

    Graduate Extension Assistants have been a key part of the NC State University Libraries Studios since the launch of the Makerspace in the Hill Library and have worked in all of the Studios including Digital Media and Virtual Reality. PhD candidates in the Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media program in the Communication Department have shaped the Studios from service design, to programming, and curriculum integrated instruction. 

    Job Role:

    The GEA supports the NC State University Libraries Studios by developing workshops, hosting programs and events, and facilitating course collaborations. The GEA works closely with library staff and campus partners. They create marketing materials, develop workshop and event descriptions and work with Libraries stakeholders to publish events pages. The GEA develops and delivers workshops. The GEA works closely with the Studios student employee team. There is also room to explore emerging technologies and prototype new directions for the Studio.

    • 20 hour/week commitment during each semester
    • Additional opportunity for paid work in the Libraries over the summer

    Open only to enrolled CRDM graduate students.
