A recent NPR article discusses the complex relationship between social media use and teen mental health. Research indicates a notable rise in anxiety, depression, and loneliness among teens since the widespread adoption of smartphones and social media around 2012. We asked Aja Chavez, the National Executive Director of our teen residential program, Mission Prep, to chime in on these important findings: “This is not just about screen time; it’s about how social media reshapes teen social life and their well-being. Telling teens to stay off social media, or limiting their screen time can make them feel resentful and might not be a long-term solution that they can be accountable for. It’s why at Mission Prep we guide teens and walk them through social media usage. We help foster awareness in them to see what is causing a reaction or emotion and how to respond.” Find out more about Mission Prep by visiting our website: https://lnkd.in/gHgjcDp9 Read the NPR news article here:https://lnkd.in/ggXYxW8e

What’s something different about Mission Prep, our adolescent (12–17) residential program at AMFM Healthcare ? One thing I love to highlight is our approach to incorporating our clients digital identities into their treatment. Technology 📱 is a HUGE part of our lives, especially for teens, and isn’t going anywhere. So, instead of removing it, we address it from a position of empowerment and self-advocacy. Three times a week, our clients engage in a therapy group called “Tech Time”, where we observe their tech use and help them develop digital insight and skills that will improve their mental health. If you want to learn more about our clinical approach and modalities, please reach out!

In today's fast-paced digital age, striking a balance between work and life is crucial for our well-being. We recognize the significance of nurturing both physical and mental health amidst the advancements in technology. While digital tools have transformed how we work and connect, it's vital to prioritize moments of unplugging and rejuvenation. We advocate for setting boundaries around screen time, prioritizing regular breaks, and engaging in offline activities to harmonize our professional and personal lives, fostering overall happiness and productivity. Incorporating mindfulness practices, such as meditation or yoga, can be instrumental in alleviating stress and fostering a sense of calm amidst the digital hustle. By cultivating a culture that values self-care and balance, we empower our team to thrive, both in their professional endeavors and personal lives. Let's embrace the digital age while acknowledging the importance of disconnecting to reconnect with ourselves and our loved ones.
