How much impact do clothing and hairstyles have on the success of a long jumper? That's the question aerodynamics professor Bert Blocken set out to answer with help from simulation. Blocken and his team determined that loose-fitting shorts and tops can increase drag by up to 25%, with losses of 10 cm or more. Tight-fitting tops and bottoms could decrease drag by almost 10%, but tops and bottoms that were too tight would increase drag. Hairstyle played a smaller role, but every style increased drag. Even a tight, slicked-back bun at the base of the neck increased drag by 2.3%. Learn more about how Ansys Fluent was utilized to determine the effects of hairstyles and clothing styles on long jump flights.

How can a slight change in a pole vaulter’s technique impact their chance of injury? With the help of Hans, our human body model, and our friends at The Manchester Metropolitan University, we simulated multiple flyaway and landing techniques to understand the impact different landings can have on an athlete’s body. What should we have Hans do next? Let us know in the comments below!

Was it created with simulation or AI? We've trained our AI model for precise prediction of agitation rate, optimizing chemical mixing in stirred tanks. Then we compared the time required for results against traditional solver-based simulation. Can you tell which one is which? Swipe below to compare the two models and see how much time you could save with Ansys SimAI.
