In the United States, nearly 40% of food is wasted. Food is the single biggest material placed in municipal landfills, which emit greenhouse gases—a major contributor to climate change. This year, City Harvest will rescue and deliver more than 81 million pounds of perfectly good, nutritious food that would have otherwise gone to waste, preventing the equivalent of 24.4 million kilograms of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. It would take 1.1 million trees to absorb that same amount of carbon in a year! Learn more about food rescue: https://lnkd.in/dY8NQjui #WeAreCityHarvest

Earlier this week, nearly 150 City Harvest volunteers rescued 78,315 pounds of the world's highest-quality foods, including wheels of cheese, jars of artisanal jam, olives, and so much more, at the close of Specialty Food Association's Summer Fancy Food Show at the Javits Center. Our trucks then delivered to Salt & Sea Mission, Teen Challenge, Children of the Light Ministry, and Open Door Family Life Center in Brooklyn; Evangel Christian Center in Queens; and Vision Urbana Pantry in Manhattan. Thank you to all of the partners, volunteers, and food donors who help make it possible for City Harvest to rescue all of this incredible food and deliver it to our neighbors in need! #WeAreCityHarvest

Today, Feeding America released new data about the state of child hunger in NYC: 1 in 4 kids in NYC experiences food insecurity, up from 1 in 5. This reflects what we’ve seen at Mobile Markets and what we’ve heard from the families we serve: Sky-high prices for food, rent, and childcare are making it harder and harder for families to make ends meet. Help provide nutritious food for NYC children and families during the summer months when access to free school meals may become limited by participating in Share Lunch Fight Hunger, our annual fundraising campaign happening now through May 17. Many thanks to Healthfirst for supporting this campaign. Learn more and act today: https://lnkd.in/ehDAQvsr #WeAreCityHarvest
