Did you know that most U.S. cotton is produced using only rainfall? Cotton growers understand the importance of responsible water usage and use practices such as no-till farming and advanced irrigation systems to optimize water use. In the U.S., 64% of cotton produced requires no irrigation, 31% receives supplemental irrigation, and only 5% is fully irrigated. The effects of this are evident: in the past 40 years, U.S. cotton producers have reduced their irrigation water use by 58% per acre inch per pounds of lint. In August, there was a change in the agency within the USDA that is responsible for making the forecast for US production. The change in agency implies a change in methods, which can result in large updates. This month, the USDA dropped its US production number from 17.0 to 15.1 million bales. Despite the reduction in the US crop estimate, a record volume of exportable cotton is projected to be available from major cotton shipping countries this crop year.
