A detailed description by an OSHA Review Commission judge of how Jay Ayers was crushed by a gate panel at a California casino project. This speaks to how do workers die in accidents when good companies with solid safety programs are on the project but the citation raises issues about whether the osha multi-employer doctrine helps fairly attribute responsibility. #construction #civilengineering #safety #workplacesafety Photo (slightly cropped): Ptáček Petr under CC BY-SA 3.0 via Wikimedia Commons.

ENR's July 22 cover story details the $250-million Longwood Reimagined project—an ambitious redevelopment of 17 acres in the heart of the historic Longwood Gardens, near Wilmington, Del. The reimagining of the century-old garden contains seven main parts indoors and out, including a total of 190,000 sq ft building types that are interconnected via concrete tunnels to a common basement utility plant under the glasshouse. Since the gardens were open to the public throughout construction, careful coordination was needed for all aspects of the sprawling but intricate facility. Additionally, the war in Ukraine complicated acquisition of the customized materials. The showcase of the project is the deceptively complex 32,000-sq-ft West Conservatory, an expressed-steel glasshouse with an asymmetric pleated roof with doubly curved members. Energy modeling was used to develop the multiple passive systems, including natural ventilation, that work together to create a microclimate for the Mediterranean-style garden under glass.
