🍂Back-to-school and the workplace: Here are 3 easy actions for leaders to take NOW 🍂 Like many working parents, September hits me HARD. The kids are back to school in new classrooms, the whole family is adjusting to new routines, and I need to show up for all of that. While also showing up in full as founder/CEO of ⚡Orum.io ⚡. We feel taxed and disorganized right now. But the good news is that this is a very brief period of transition — one that managers and leaders can make far easier with a few very easy, temporary actions. Make space and give grace. Enact the small gestures without them having to ask. Your people will be SO thankful as they quickly settle in. Here are 3 small changes to consider for just the next few weeks: 🗣️ Proactively reach out with an intentional statement of flexibility. 🗣️ I believe strongly in giving people permission rather than making them ask for forgiveness. No working mom wants to ask if that call must be at 8am on the first day of school, and no dad feels great about asking if he can finish up a deliverable in the evening so he can grab the kids off the bus. Proactively let them know: “We’re all in this together, and you can be more flexible in your work from home schedules/team meetings/hours in the office during September.” They’ll feel far more comfortable communicating, rather than making what feels like a special request. ⏰ Move your earliest meeting an hour later. ⏰ If you have a standing 8:30a or 9a meeting, move it to 10a for a couple of weeks. Schedule any one-off meetings for 10 or later when possible. Families’ new morning routines may require some experimentation in the early weeks — it’s complicated enough without having to take calls from the car while in the kindergarten drop-off line. 🗓️ Respect holds on team members’ calendar. 🗓️ If you’re the more senior person, when you ask someone to move something they're going to do it. If they’ve blocked 5:30 to relieve their childcare, they're going to scramble. You’ve inadvertently put them in the position of having to apologize for having children. And if the block was for, say, an annual physical, we wouldn't be asking you to apologize. No matter what the team member’s calendar block is for, there’s almost nothing so important that you can’t figure it out for another time. I believe this season feels so difficult because you have so much change at home, yet at work, it can feel impossible to admit that for just a couple weeks you need a little flexibility. That’s an incredible gift that we can proactively give as managers, with essentially no effect on the business. Offer that gift. Make the small gestures with huge impact. Everyone will reap the rewards. 🎁 Working parents, how are you holding up? Managers, how are you managing through this transition? Let me know in the comments! 👇   #entrepreneur #tech #workingparents

🗣️🗣️🗣️ 3 hacks to become a GREAT PUBLIC SPEAKER 🗣️🗣️🗣️ So many people HATE public speaking, or at least get sweaty palms thinking of it. Yet speaking and presenting is a huge part of many folks’ jobs — sales calls, dev standups, town halls, monthly team updates, etc. As founder/CEO of ⚡ Orum.io ⚡, I know that standing in front of 20 (or 20,000) people is entirely different from a 1:1 conversation. My 3 hacks: 📕 Structure your narrative like a story. 📕 From children’s books to the most epic tales, stories have a clear format: beginning, middle, and end. Once you view it through this lens, it’ll be apparent everywhere — that TED Talk you loved, that compelling YouTuber, that captivating commencement speech. Think about the three-part narrative, and structure becomes far easier. You simply want to engage your audience the way good stories do. 🍽️ Speak from the heart, as if you’re at a dinner party. 🍽️ Imagine you’re at a dinner and you happen to be seated next to an entomologist. You aren’t particularly into insects yourself, but this woman is just SO passionate about her work — and as she excitedly riffs about her latest discoveries about the social behavior of bees, you can’t help but be captivated. Because people respond to passion. Find the little (or big) piece you’re passionate about within the topic you’re discussing, and lean into it. 🌱 Be natural, not perfect. 🌱 This is perhaps the most critical tip. Remember: In everyday conversation, people stumble when talking. They laugh a little. They don’t follow a word-for-word script. I think of The Moth, which is one of my favorite storytelling formats: often unseasoned speakers, simply telling a story about something that’s often mundane at the core. But they’re so HUMAN about it, and the authenticity is what resonates. Related note: No one else knows what’s supposed to come next in the story besides you — so if you skipped a point or two, that’s OK. You don’t have to be perfect, and in fact, you probably shouldn’t be perfect. Just be natural. Now, I’d love to hear from you in the comments: Do you love or hate public speaking? Any tips or hacks you’d add? 🗣️ #publicspeaking #storytelling #leadershipcommunications

“It’s a full-time job believing in yourself. No days off.” This is more than an Instagram meme. It’s a truism essential to making it as a founder. You can have all the success, all the support of your investors and mentors — but YOU are the one who must believe in yourself, in your very core. I know this as founder/CEO of ⚡Orum.io ⚡. But if you struggle with this, you’re not alone. Here’s how to boost that confidence and beat imposter syndrome 👇 💻 Limit social media. 💻 LinkedIn is the founder's version of Instagram. It can quickly become a rabbit hole. As you endlessly scroll, it looks like everyone is raising money, starting new businesses, and constantly announcing exciting news. We know intellectually that social media is a sizzle reel, not reality — but emotionally, it can still feel like you don’t measure up. Give yourself a few minutes to scroll, then move on with your day. 🧘Feel the hard things, then let them roll off your back. 🧘 In early startup life, it can feel like things DON’T work as much as they do work. You get deep into proof of value with a potential client who doesn’t end up buying. A job candidate strings you along, then joins a competitor. This is where the spiral can begin 🌀: “Does this mean I’m not good enough?” No. They’re just things that happen in startup life. But if you let them, they’ll weigh on you — like pebbles in a backpack, slowly making your load heavier until you can no longer go on. Unload yourself, and look ahead to the next by... 🗒️ Make a list of opportunities and tackle one each month.🗒️ This could be a rolling list of those tasks you just haven’t gotten to yet, but could be unlocks for your business. Pick one to tackle each month — so even when things don’t go as planned, you have a ready list of items that are controllable, actionable, and accomplishable. 🧢Work with a coach. 🧢 Advice I come back to often, because it’s worth every minute and every dollar spent. It’s particularly important here: An objective observer can change your perspective, pull you out of spiraling about the little thing that went wrong this week, and reflect back on all of the incredible things you’ve accomplished. Always remember: You should take days off from work. But never, EVER take a single day off from believing in yourself. ✨ #truism #mindset #SelfMotivation

How do you establish and maintain influence? Sara Khairi from Tearsheet takes a look at why leadership relevance is a critical component of achieving company growth in today’s market — starting with what Stephany Kirkpatrick, CFP®, our CEO & founder, says about seeking perspectives from professionals outside her usual circle: 💬 “Something that I think has been a tremendous asset to be more effective, both as a CEO and a leader of people, is having an executive coach.” Having a mentor who understands the intricacies of entrepreneurship – distinct from board members, friends, or spouses — has enabled Stephany to gain a fresh and objective perspective that has contributed to her leadership growth and pushed her initiatives forward. 💡The primary insight she has gained from this mentorship is the realization that success should be seen as a perpetual journey rather than a conclusive goal, emphasizing living in the now. 💬 “What I have learned from coaching is that I am successful, right now, today. Of course, we have other benchmarks for success in place. But we also have to evolve continually as the problem we’re solving evolves. I focus on the now and what’s the most relevant to the next couple of quarters to drive growth and overall success.” Check out the other thoughts from Immad Akhund (Mercury), Everett Cook (Rho), Michael Rangel (Novo), Max Levchin (Affirm), and Colin Walsh (Varo Bank) in the full articles linked below. https://lnkd.in/gzamwSuz #fintech #founders #leadership

If your compensation data isn’t updated in real time, it’s outdated. 🥱 At my company ⚡Orum.io⚡, we have several philosophies about comp. I’ve written here before about how we don’t negotiate salaries when you quit….and we really don’t negotiate on the way in, either. 🤷 To be able to take these stands, you need to have a leg to stand ON — meaning your comp data needs to be damn accurate, up to the minute. ⏰ Enter: Carta. 💵 Carta’s compensation tool is the focus of today’s #OrumOdes, a series in which I shout out products our team uses and loves. It’s the biggest database of private company salaries, with an eye for startups in particular. We use it to help create total comp, equity, and bonuses. 📊 You can filter by stage of company, region, role, seniority, specialty, etc. The filters let you get pretty precise, so it's way less guesswork and a lot more precision. (You NEED precision and confidence to implement policies like “we don’t negotiate salaries”!) 🤓 It’s a world 🌎 of difference since starting Orum in 2019. Back then, we received a spreadsheet every six months of backdated information largely from Silicon Valley companies — not New York-based startups. Now there’s magnitudes more data, and it’s updated in real time with Carta. We can mark our salaries to market, and put forth offers we feel really good about. 😃 This approach also helps us ensure that compensation is equitable. As I’ve written before, the folks who feel most comfortable negotiating are those who are already in a privileged position. So it’s about more than attracting and retaining talent here at Orum — real-time comp also helps us level the playing field in this space overall. ⚖️ Thanks to Henry Ward and the team!
