𝗖𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻’𝘀 𝗟𝗼𝗴, 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝟳𝟴𝟭𝟬𝟵.𝟳 — 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗜𝘀 𝗕𝗮𝗮𝗦 𝗙𝗼𝗿? 𝗔𝗹𝗲𝘅’𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝗮𝗦 (𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 Infinant | Grow Your Bank) BaaS middleware platforms (or what the bank regulatory agencies call intermediate platforms) emerged for a very good reason — at the beginning of this latest generation of fintech (around 2014), banks and fintech startups had no idea how to work together. Middleware platforms promised to solve the technical, legal, operational, and cultural challenges that naturally arise when you put a 24-year-old engineer in the same room as a bunch of 50-year-old bankers. BaaS middleware platforms alleviated many of these problems. However, many of them did so while making an assumption that now haunts the entire industry. Many early BaaS middleware platforms assumed that the fintech startup was both their user *and* their customer. Everything they built sat downstream of this assumption: 🏦 The way the technology platform was designed 🏦 The way the middleware platform helped matchmake partnerships and structure legal agreements 🏦 The role that some middleware platforms played in compliance and program management. Everything assumed that the fintech startups (which had all the leverage back in the halcyon days of 2014-2021) were both the user and the customer. Meanwhile, the banks (which, at the time, were just happy to be getting that sweet Baas revenue) were relegated to the role of a commoditized service provider. Spoiler alert — this turned out to be a flawed assumption! As we now know, fintech startups aren’t the critical link in the BaaS supply chain. Banks are. Fintech startups may be the users of BaaS middleware platforms (they use the middleware’s tech to build products on top of the bank’s charter), but banks are the customers. BaaS must work well for banks (economically, regulatorily, operationally), or it won’t ultimately work for anyone. This is why most middleware platforms now describe themselves as bank technology platforms and why BaaS solution providers that have always focused on selling to banks are becoming ascendant right now. Banks were always the customer. It just took a crisis for the industry to realize it. I’d love to know what your take on this customer vs. user framing is. Drop your take in the comments!👇 If you're looking to learn more about Bank-driven BaaS, reach out to Infinant | Grow Your Bank.

  • 🔎 The importance of transparency in banking applies at various layers - from the customer to their brand app, to the bank, to the regulators.    Early BaaS intermediaries clouded this transparency, shifting customers, data, and compliance away from the bank. This still remains a challenge with BaaS intermediaries attempting to pivot but not willing to forego their legacy revenue streams nor contracts with fintech.   Banks now have the second mover advantage, to build foundationally stronger business lines without the risks of outsourcing to the BaaS intermediaries. This advantage applies to fintech as well, looking to partner directly with banks versus being brokered by a BaaS provider.   What does a second mover advantage look like? - Ability to manage all your embedded programs from a single command center. - Real-time transparency into program deposits, transactions, deposit volatility, and risk (KYC, AML, RegE, etc) metrics. - Automated settlement and reconciliation operations that segment each program’s financials. - Instant access to regulatory data on customers, accounts, and transactions.   When you go from outsourced ledgers and file swaps to a real-time banking platform, you start to advance your bank.  🔗 Welcome to Infinant: https://www.infinant.com/
