Proudly presenting our Pro Bono Litigation Matter of the Year, recognized at our 2024 Mayer Brown Pro Bono Awards program! Last year, as part of our Project Equity Initiative, we joined forces with the Washington Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and Disability Rights Maryland in a lawsuit against the Sheriff’s Office in Harford County, Maryland. The suit alleged that Sheriff’s deputies unlawfully and unnecessarily battered Rodney Coster, who suffers from bipolar disorder. His mother had taken him to the Sheriff’s Office to seek their help to get him treatment because Mr. Coster was in the midst of a mental health crisis. Mr. Coster filed claims under the ADA and for use of excessive force. The court denied the majority of defendants’ motion to dismiss, holding that under the ADA the officers had a duty to reasonably accommodate Mr. Coster, absent an indication that he posed a threat. This holding extends the scope of the ADA’s reasonable accommodation requirement with respect to law enforcement interactions. The case was favorably settled. For our work on this case, led by partner Alex Lakatos, Mayer Brown was honored by the Washington Lawyers Committee with its Outstanding Achievement Award. For the second consecutive year, John Nadolenco, managing partner of our Los Angeles office, was named to Los Angeles Business Journal’s “Leaders of Influence: Litigation & Trial Attorneys” list! The list honors Los Angeles-based litigators and trial lawyers “who go to the proverbial mat to fight for their clients before judges and jury have their own unique sets of skills.” John is recognized for high-profile matters, including representing the entire auto industry in challenging the constitutionality of a Massachusetts ballot initiative that requires car companies to share data generated by their vehicles. The publication also recognizes him as “one of General Motors' go-to class action litigators.” Learn more about John: https://lnkd.in/d2U2bmvU #litigators #leadersofinfluence

Worried you may be falling victim to short-termism in your organization’s ESG initiatives? While nearly three-quarters of business leaders in the financial services sector believe that companies must embrace ESG initiatives and sustainability to thrive in the next economy, our new study, The Next Organization, reveals a widespread lack of preparedness and short-termism among leaders. In addition, we also found that the cost of transition to net zero is a significant obstacle to business transformation and longer-term strategies, as investment firms in particular worry about funding prolonged and expensive plans. How is your organization adopting net zero strategies and addressing the costs of transitioning? Discover how access to creative capital can supercharge your transformation and how Mayer Brown can help your organization achieve readiness and stay relevant. Each year we recognize our colleagues who have gone above and beyond in their pro bono legal work during our annual Pro Bono Awards program, now in its 18th year. This year, our Project of the Year award recognizes a team of colleagues who have been supporting and defending transgender rights. Among the many issues transgender people must contend with is having identity documents that do not reflect the names or gender markers that they use. Yet securing a legal change to these documents can be an intimidating experience. In Chicago and New York, we have supported TLDEF's Name Change Project, which provides legal services to low-income transgender, non-binary and gender non-conforming people on a pro bono basis. To date, we have taken on 20 cases through TLDEF, in addition to two transgender name and gender-marker change clinics with Legal Services NYC. We have also partnered with TLDEF on three amicus briefs in West Virginia, Indiana and Minnesota. West Virginia and Indiana were among the growing number of states denying transgender youth access to the numerous well-being, educational and societal benefits that sports can offer, including in particular, for young people who often suffer from mental health challenges. Our briefs highlighted the voices of transgender athletes and, in one of those cases, the law was overturned. In West Virginia, the US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit ruled that the ban violated Title IX, the landmark 1972 US civil rights law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in any school or education program that receives funding from the federal government.
