At the National, we are a theatre for the whole nation, a theatre for everyone.

About us

The National Theatre’s mission is to make world class theatre that’s entertaining, challenging and inspiring – and to make it for everyone. It aims to reach the widest possible audience and to be as inclusive, diverse and national as possible with a broad range of productions that play in London, on tour around the UK, on Broadway and across the globe. The National Theatre's extensive UK-wide learning and participation programme supports young people and schools through performance and writing programmes like Connections, New Views and Let’s Play, while Public Acts creates ambitious new works of participatory theatre in sustained partnership with theatres and community organisations around the country. The National Theatre extends its reach through digital programmes including NT Live, which broadcasts some of the best of British theatre to over 2,500 venues in 65 countries, and the National Theatre Collection, which makes recordings of shows available to UK schools and the global education sector. The National Theatre invests in the future of theatre by developing talent, creating bold new work and building audiences, partnering with a range of UK theatres and theatre companies.

The National Theatre’s New Work Department is where the story begins. A hub for nurturing creative talent, it is both a direct pipeline to our stages and those across the UK via our Generate Programme, which supports artists and companies developing work to be staged beyond the capital.   This Guardian feature offers a peek behind the scenes of ‘the heartbeat’ of the NT. Rufus Norris, Nina Steiger, Rachel Twigg, Clint Dyer, Beth Steel and others share their thoughts and experiences about the place where theatre makers of today and tomorrow are given space and support to develop work.   In the last year the New Work Department has worked with more than 1,000 artists at the NT Studio, as well as supporting over 30 theatres and companies from outside London as part of the Generate Programme.   None of this would be possible without the generous support of our many supporters, ensuring new stories are created and shared with audiences across the globe.   #StoriesStartHere https://lnkd.in/epDCFy68

As part of our partnership with international digital platform TikTok, we were delighted to host a Creative Careers Panel at the National Theatre last week. The discussion explored the importance of broadening awareness of routes into the industry and opportunities for young people, and how the partnership aims to support this by spotlighting creative careers and reaching a wider audience of young people. The brilliant panel included the National Theatre’s Production and Technical Director Paul Handley and Head of Creators, TikTok UK, Ireland & Nordics Jo Burford, alongside creator and actor Hannah Lowther, whose musical theatre career was springboarded through TikTok, and NT Young Producer Afriya Nylander who has been curating content for the NT’s TikTok channel. The panel was moderated by broadcaster and supporter of the arts Brenda Emmanus OBE, who led an inspiring discussion. Creative Careers at the National Theatre has been enabled by TikTok since January with support for three of our key nationwide programmes for young people, including Apprenticeships, National Theatre Collection and the Young People’s Programme. The partnership combines the National Theatre’s in-depth connections with young people, schools and communities nationwide with the digital expertise and reach of the international entertainment platform. Young participants have been creating an array of imaginative content for the platform, spotlighting our talented backstage apprentices, showing what happens in a Young Technicians workshop and sharing revision notes for key titles on the National Theatre Collection. By meeting the next generation of theatre audiences, makers and creative thinkers where they are, we hope to inspire and stimulate a more creative nation and open up opportunities for skills development and training to a wider audience to support the future of our world-leading sector.
