OUTbio Seattle takes on Vancouver! Shout-out to the Zyme&Proud team for a hugely successful first event and for leading the charge to get other Vancouver biotech companies to support the LGBTQ+ community, as well.

I was lucky to spend last week with biotech’s biggest baddie, my OUTbio bestie – Naomi Schwartz, PhD, MPH. Last Thursday, we made a quick trek up to Van for Zymeworks Inc.’s first inaugural Pride in Biotech event. Folks from across the lower mainland gathered to celebrate BC’s LGBTQ+ community in biotech – and let me tell you, the room really sizzled. Naomi and I were honored that the Zyme&Proud team welcomed us into the fold. But we weren’t the only ones making the jaunt northward. It was such a treat to spend time with our OUTbio Seattle buddies Ann-Michelle De Arton, MBA and Cheryl Beardslee, too. Our top takeaway as we headed back home? #Pride knows no borders. Congratulations to the whole Zyme&Proud team – Laura O'Connor, Polly Shao, Katina Mak, Diego Perez Escanda, Celine Chartrand, and others – for such a stellar event and for building a new home for LGBTQ+ family in biotech. The OUTbio Seattle team can’t wait to see you all again soon!

Two scenes from July that show what makes OUTbio Seattle tick: The team was proud to roll up our sleeves alongside Brandon Knox and the Lambert House LGBTQ+ Youth Community Center crew to build out their new office in North Capitol Hill. Lambert House is a safe place for LGBTQ+ youth ages 10-22. Their calendar is jam packed with fun activities, dinners, support groups, planning meetings, dances, and other events. It’s where LGBTQ+ youth make life better for each other. Our favorite part? The painting. We’re happy to report that no *sass violet* was spilled or splattered, scout’s honor. We also had a blast hosting our first-ever joint event with the HBA Pacific Region. Thanks to everybody who joined OUTbio Seattle and #HBASeattle at Rough & Tumble to build and strengthen our community over a few brews and a bit of biotech. Wednesday was OUTbio Seattle’s 1st birthday. We had a blast celebrating a year chock full of memories with our friends at #HBASeattle on Rough & Tumble’s veranda overlooking beautiful Ballard. There was biotech, there were brews (and mojitos!), there were many new friends made along the way–and we couldn’t have asked for anything more. Last Thursday, we gathered to kick off Pride weekend and celebrate the diversity and strength of Seattle’s LGBTQ+ life science community. A big round of applause and appreciation for our event sponsors at Monod Bio, Outpace Bio, Shape Therapeutics Inc. and BioMed Realty for their generous contributions that made our event such a success. Their leadership is building a brighter biotech ecosystem for the LGBTQ+ community of today, and tomorrow. And a very special thank you to David S., COO and Co-Founder at Monod Bio, for his poignant reminder that businesses and board rooms have not always been a place where our community can be their authentic selves, and that we must stand together in elevating LGBTQ+ professionals and creating inclusive spaces where we can all shine. Take a look at a few of our favorite moments from the Pride celebration 👇

📸ICYMI: We kicked off Pride with bagels at Cecil Bacon Manor There was networking, nibbles, and poppy seeds aplenty thanks to generous support from Eltana Wood-Fired Bagels, PCC Community Markets, and Kaffeeklatsch. Our resident early birds gathered for a round of speed networking led by Christian Dimaano before heading up to Seattle Pride’s annual Pride in the Park. . . . Miss us? You’ve still got time to snag a ticket for our second Pride celebration on June 27 – made possible by support from Gourmondo Co and event sponsors Monod Bio, Outpace Bio, Shape Therapeutics Inc., and BioMed Realty. Together with Goodwin Law, OUTbio San Diego hosted a spectacular LGBTQ+ networking mixer on June 5th at East Village Brewing Company for the #BIO2024 International Convention attendees here in San Diego! Additionally, this was perfect timing to kick off #Pride Month, celebrating and commemorating #LGBTQ+ solidarity, collectivity, and identity. With the help of local San Diego singer and entertainer, Justin Renaissance (justinrenaissance.com), we kicked off the event to his new single, Pride Song, while biotech industry professionals networked and mingled, as they continued to empower each other through advocacy, development, and support - the core mission of OUTbio San Diego. We want to pay special recognition to Goodwin Law (goodwinlaw.com) for sponsoring the evening's event. Without their support, this truly would not have been possible. Thank you to 147photos.com and Antoine Didienne for donating his time and amazing work with professional photography during the event (professional photos coming soon)! Thank you to Creative Happens Events for the super festive photo booth, allowing us to have some fun and preserve our memories forever here. We also wanted to highlight all of our 2023-2024 Inaugural sponsors for OUTbio San Diego, who were all able to be present to accept their crystal awards for their generous contributions to making OUTbio San Diego a prominent fixture in the San Diego LGBTQ+ community! Platinum Sponsors: Travere Therapeutics Inizio Evoke Silver Sponsor: AmpersandPeople Bronze Sponsor: Takeda Lastly, we will never stop thanking YOU -- the folks who show up everyday to make a huge impact to the biotech and life sciences community, while being your true and uncompromising self. This Pride season, let your rainbow 🌈 fly higher than ever before. Be proud today (and everyday) for the postive changes and impact you make tomorrow. We can't wait to gather with you all again for the next OUTbio San Diego event. Stay informed by signing up for our newsletter at outbiosandiego.org! With 🏳️🌈 Pride 🏳️⚧️, The OUTbio San Diego Board
