We're honored to sponsor SABR and have our team members at the SABR National Convention last week in Minneapolis! From the Welcome Reception presented by Baseball Reference, to the Immaculate Feud game inspired by Immaculate Grid, it's a pleasure to be a part of the convention and its events. We'll see you next year at SABR 53! ⚾️
I had a wonderful few days at the SABR National Convention in Minneapolis. A highlight of the convention (and honestly, my career) was meeting Don Daglow, who designed Earl Weaver Baseball with Eddie Dombrower. I brought my copy of Earl Weaver Baseball for Don to sign—yes, the same copy (on 5.25” floppies for our Apple IIGS) I lost myself in for hours on end as a kid. We talked about how the game (which was really more of a simulation engine to me) sparked my interest in baseball history and building things. I can directly draw a line from EWB to the dream job I have today. Amazingly, one afternoon I got to just sit down with Don and talk about his career and the things he made that had such a profound impact on my career and the things I help build today. He also appreciated hearing that while my dad may not have been remotely interested in sports, he got us our first computer for Christmas 1986 and purchased EWB for me shortly after—his own unique way of setting me on this path. They say “don’t meet your heroes” because you could be disappointed. But sometimes you meet the most talented, humble, and empathetic people who are truly energized by hearing about their impact on you. My heart is full because the SABR convention is full of people who never really “grew up” and stopped reading the backs of baseball cards and playing baseball simulators. I got to see so many people I consider dear, dear friends, from podcasters to former general managers and everyone in between. Seriously, imagine ripping open old card packs with something like 75 other people and sitting next to someone telling you stories about signing the player on the card you’re holding. There is nothing like it. The Twins were incredible hosts. Speakers included FOUR Hall of Famers (Rod Carew, Tony Oliva, Bert Blyleven, and Jim Kaat), LaTroy Hawkins (who was phenomenal), Glen Perkins, and many members of the front office. The ballpark is gorgeous and locals are lucky that’s their home park. SABR 53 in Dallas-Fort Worth has already been announced and I can’t wait to see everyone again.

Our very own Adam Darowski joined the Pod of Fame podcast to discuss Julio Franco and his career. Should the 3x MLB All-Star be a Hall of Famer? Listen to the podcast here ⬇️
This was easily among the most fun I’ve had on a podcast. I view Julio Franco CONSERVATIVELY as a 3,122 hit man. Is that a truly realistic estimate? I 100% think so. Here’s why. You hear me say all the time (either that or I’m not doing my job) that Julio Franco had at least 4,410 career hits. 2,586 of them were in MLB. That’s a lot! When I consider him a 3,122 hit man, I’m not doing some sort of career-extending exercise to project those numbers. The dude played IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL until he was 49 years old. My exercise merely fills in the gaps. Those gaps are: 1995 (Japan during strike) 1998 (Japan) 1999 (Mexico, except 1 AB for Tampa Bay) 2000 (KBO) 2001 (Mexico, except September with Atlanta) What I’m going to do for each of those seasons is take Franco’s MLB season before and after and average the hits. I’m not pretending he was an every day player for any of these seasons. I’m just averaging what he did immediately before and immediate after. Here’s what you get: 1995: 139 hits 1998: 106 1999: 106 2000: 106 2001: 79 (106 minus the 27 he had in Sept) Total: 536 hits If anything, this feels conservative to me. Now add this to his actual career total: 2,586 + 536 = 3,122 career hits Again, I'm not tacking any years on to the end of Franco’s career—I’m just filling in the gaps. All those gaps were ended by him returning to MLB and thriving as one of the best “old players” in history. He was also pretty great when he was younger. When the strike hit, he was nearing 2000 hits, had 5 Silver Sluggers, 3 All-Star appearances (with an MVP), and a Batting Title. I think the quality + unique nature of his career make him a Hall of Famer. I know not everyone will agree with that, but I think this 3,122 hit projection at least piques the interest. https://lnkd.in/ei88sUBP
