Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge.
About us
About the Wikimedia Foundation The Wikimedia Foundation is the nonprofit organization that operates Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia free knowledge projects. Our vision is a world in which every single human can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. We believe that everyone has the potential to contribute something to our shared knowledge, and that everyone should be able to access that knowledge freely. We host Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects, build software experiences for reading, contributing, and sharing Wikimedia content, support the volunteer communities and partners who make Wikimedia possible, and advocate for policies that enable Wikimedia and free knowledge to thrive. The Wikimedia Foundation is a charitable, not-for-profit organization that relies on donations. We receive donations from millions of individuals around the world, with an average donation of about $15. We also receive donations through institutional grants and gifts. The Wikimedia Foundation is a United States 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization with offices in San Francisco, California, USA.

What drives someone to dedicate themselves to the Wikimedia movement? For Ellie Méndez, it is the joy of seeing others grow. Ellie is a passionate Wikipedia trainer, editor, and event organizer from El Salvador. In 2021, she co-founded Wikimedistas El Salvador, promoting Wikimedia projects and enriching content about her country. Despite numerous challenges, Ellie is committed to bridging the digital gap – the disparity in access to digital technologies and the internet. She strives to share El Salvador’s rich stories and enhance knowledge across the Latin American region, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to contribute to learn. We are proud to #WikiCelebrate Ellie’s efforts. Read more about Ellie’s journey ➡️ https://w.wiki/Ap5A

Do you care about the future of free, reliable, and open knowledge? Last April, the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia affiliates (independent organizations supporting volunteers who contribute to Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia, and other free knowledge projects) published an open letter to shape the future of the internet. The Global Digital Compact is a process led by UN member states to establish principles and commitments that can help channel the immense potential benefits of digital technologies. 🌎🌍🌏🌐 We called on governments worldwide to include 3 key commitments in the Compact to help public interest projects not only continue to exist, but also thrive in our shared, digital future: 1️⃣ Protect and empower communities to govern online public interest projects. 2️⃣ Promote and protect digital public goods by supporting a robust digital commons from which everyone, everywhere can benefit. 3️⃣ Build and deploy artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to support and empower, not replace, people who create content and make decisions in the public interest. Over 20 Wikimedia affiliates, 4 other organizations, and more than 650 individuals from 80+ countries have signed the letter already. Read our blog post for more details: https://lnkd.in/eVsPE57K And, if you want to help shape the future of the internet in a way that protects free and open knowledge, please sign the letter! ✍🏽

Meet Yuriko Kadokura, a 70-year-old librarian from Japan whose childhood love for encyclopedias led her to Wikipedia. Yuriko describes her gradual but enjoyable path to editing Wikipedia as a “mountain trail course, which takes you slowly up as you admire the scenery.’ Read about Yuriko's journey with Wikipedia in the free English translation of her book, “A 70-Year-Old Wikipedian Talks About the Charm of Libraries,” available on Diff. Concerned about disinformation? Meet the Anti-Disinformation Repository. Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects have been built, from the start, on verifiable sources. Even before combating disinformation became mainstream news, our community focused on the accessibility of trustworthy information, providing reliable information in over 300 languages for people around the world. In 2022, the Wikimedia Foundation launched the Anti-Disinformation Repository, showcasing various tools and initiatives developed by volunteers, affiliates, and the Foundation to counteract misinformation. A notable example is the work of Wiki Movimento Brasil, who uses Wikidata to improve historical records about human rights violations during Brazil's military dictatorship. From 1964 to 1985, Brazil’s military dictatorship heavily censored information and committed many human rights abuses, such as organized torture and unlawful killings. During the dictatorship, collaborative efforts began to secretly document human rights abuses, a crucial step for preserving collective memory and preventing future injustices. With new disinformation campaigns aimed at erasing the military dictatorship’s crimes, this effort to preserve collective memory continued, and the Wikimedia movement has played a part. By consolidating and curating data from Wikidata, Wiki Movimento Brasil ensures that accurate information remains accessible, safeguarding historical truth. This empowers researchers and the public to confront disinformation. Read more about our community efforts to combat disinformation ➡️ https://w.wiki/AhTT
