🌍 Delivering culturally sensitive care in today's diverse world is more critical than ever. Healthcare professionals who work abroad often demonstrate heightened sensitivity and a more culturally adapted approach to care. My experiences working in various and diverse countries have highlighted the complex relation between culture and well-being. 🇬🇧 One memorable instance involved caring for a #Muslim patient while working in the #UnitedKingdom, where I learned firsthand about post-mortem rituals. Participating in the #ritual not only taught me the how but, more importantly, the why behind each step. It became evident that such cultural understanding was pivotal in aiding the family's acceptance of their loss and facilitating a healthy mourning process. 🇰🇪 Similarly, my time in Tigoni Level 4 Hospital in #Kenya revealed the lengths deprived communities go to honor their deceased. Witnessing families walk miles to provide a dignified #burial underscored the significant impact of addressing cultural needs beyond traditional healthcare boundaries. On one occasion, I personally arranged a taxi to transport a deceased individual back to their community. The expression on the family's faces made it clear that, in their eyes, this act was the most meaningful 'treatment' their loved one could receive. Unfortunately, I encountered a reality where patients often do not seek healthcare assistance due to the fear of being unable to return home for a dignified burial. ✨ These diverse encounters underscore the importance of embracing a person's background and belief system. Rather than making assumptions, a question-oriented, conversation-centered approach allows for more personalized care, considering potential cultural differences. By acknowledging these diverse #belief systems, we create an environment of openness and respect, fostering #holistic and effective healthcare. #CulturalCompetence #GlobalHealthcare #CulturalSensitivity #thefutureofhealthcare #InterconnectedWorld #nursing #healthcare

Today, Immigration Canada (IRCC) announced new, enhanced caregiver pilots, to allow caregivers to continue to come to Canada, as programs are made permanent. The new pilot programs will provide home care workers with permanent residence (PR) on arrival in Canada. They will also be allowed to work for organizations that provide temporary or part-time care for people who are semi-independent or recovering from an injury or illness. Through these new pilot programs, candidates interested in working in Canada’s home care sector will be eligible to apply if they meet the following criteria: 1️⃣ attain a minimum of level 4 based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) 2️⃣ hold the equivalent of a Canadian high school diploma 3️⃣ have recent and relevant work experience 4️⃣ receive an offer for a full-time home care job In recent years, immigration programs for caregivers have been highly scrutinized, from incredibly long processing times, failure to address urgent care needs of vulnerable Canadians/PRs requiring care, and impractical restrictions on the caregivers and their Canadian employers. Only time will tell if these changes will address these and other challenges. #Caregivers #CaregiverImmigration #CanadianImmigration
We will launch new pilot programs to better meet the needs of caregivers and the families they support in Canada. The new pilot programs will grant permanent residence status to caregivers on arrival in Canada and allow them to pursue other jobs at any time. More info: https://bit.ly/4c4JJCl The new pilot programs will replace the Home Child Care Provider Pilot Program and the Home Support Worker Pilot Program, which are closing on June 19, 2024.

Quality care is essential for the well-being of individuals and communities. It ensures that vulnerable people receive the support they need, and it provides meaningful employment for thousands of Australians. But, current care models in Australia are facing a number of challenges that impact the quality of care being delivered to people, including thoses Australians living in harder to reach communities in regional, remote and rural places. That’s why Care Together has been established. Care Together is Australia’s first program to support communities to explore co-operative and mutual ways to deliver care services where they live. We’ve been funded by the Australian Government to explore a different way of providing care in communities across Australia that focuses on the needs of the people receiving care and the people who deliver the care. Care Together puts people first by using co-operative principles and co-operative and mutual business models. We’re exploring how co-operatives - which are democratic, inclusive, and community-driven businesses - can improve care services. Our goal is to provide care that is shaped around community needs and delivered by an empowered workforce. https://caretogether.coop/ #CareTogether #CareCoops

Digital Marketing & Events Officer at International Foundation for Integrated Care (IFIC) | Course Coordinator at Integrated Care Academy (ICA)
Family carers play a pivotal role in delivering integrated care. This year at the International Foundation for Integrated Care (IFIC)'s 24th International Conference on Integrated Care (#ICIC24) the converation focused on 'Taking the leap' and making shared decision making happen in action. Patients, family caregivers and loved ones need to be part of the conversation. Trust that the person accessing care knows what is important to them. Trust that family caregivers and loved ones know what is important to their loved one / family member that is accessing healthcare. Involving family caregivers in the conversation will enable the patient's journey to be more seamless taking care to support the patient in accessing the healthcare they need in order to ensure that in their care journey patients are met with dignity and empowerment. As the conversation on #integratedcare moves to focusing on shared decision making let's focus on how we can do this and see it happening in action so everyone can experience person-centred care.

Leading the Charge: Empowering Diverse Voices and Embracing Inclusion at Mencap NI (All views expressed are personal)
Supporting and enabling people with learning disabilities to improve their health and wellbeing is a key priority for Mencap. As part of our response to the current Department of Health consultation on A Strategic Framework to Prevent the Harm caused by Obesity, and Improve Diets and Levels of Physical Activity in Northern Ireland. We are consulting with a range of people with lived experience of living with obesity, their parents, health care professionals, teachers, GP, paediatricians, local councils, academics, other government departments, health & fitness sector and sports industry. This is a really important consultation…we need to reduce the socioeconomic health inequalities for disadvantaged communities here in Northern Ireland. On a personal level, I’m coming to this wanting to ensure that @Mencap support to create the conditions in Northern Ireland which enable people with learning disabilities to improve their diet and participate in more physical activity, and reduce the risk of related harm for those living with overweight and obesity’. #inclusionmatters #sportforall #inequalities #learningdisabilities https://lnkd.in/e8qax5Sq

During his trip to Finland, our Training Manager, John, who is deafblind, was impressed by the exceptional support and services offered to deafblind people. Countries like Finland, exemplify a society where deafblind people have the #RightToBeSeenAndHeard. Looking ahead, it's clear that Scotland can draw valuable lessons from Finland's example. Currently lacking a formal definition for deafblindness, Scotland overlooks a crucial opportunity to address the unique challenges faced by the deafblind community. This gap can result in inequalities across various aspects of life, including education, employment, healthcare, and overall wellbeing. The time to act is now. By formally recognising deafblindness through the Nordic lens and implementing tailored support systems, Scotland can ensure early identification and intervention, paving the way for a more inclusive society. Let's take inspiration from Finland and strive for a Scotland where every individual receives the support they need to thrive.
