Our paper "Feedbacks between city development and coastal adaptation: A systems thinking approach" is out. The paper explores emerging feedback mechanisms between city development and coastal adaptation and their manifestation in theory and practice. We analyze the cascading effects of three generic adaptation strategies on coastal urban processes. The findings emphasize that sustainable adaptation pathways require a system lens for holistic decision-making to avoid cross-sectoral burden shifting and increased vulnerabilities. Thank you to the co-authors Roland Löwe and Karsten Arnbjerg-Nielsen. This publication is part of Realdania's project 'Byerne og det stigende havvand'.

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat recently analyzed 1.3 million buildings in the Miami area by their elevation above mean sea level. 52% of the buildings lie at 10 meters or less above mean sea level; however, just 0.3% of those are sited below 2.2 meters - the maximum projected sea-level rise by 2100. Does this surprise anyone? Work, I. (2024, February). Sea-level rise susceptibility: Miami. The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. https://lnkd.in/eR_-rSsT

If you don't have time to review the full report, at least take a look at the 4 Takeaways from the 2022 Sea Level Rise Report. Takeaway #1 mirrors my personal observations of water levels in coastal Alabama over the last 30 years. Boat ramp parking lots and roads that never flooded at high tide now do so multiple times a month. Flats on north end of Mobile Bay that used to be dry at low tide now have 6-8" of water over them. The time is now to start planning and taking actions to make our communities more resilient for the next 30-100 years of SLR.

Congrats to the City of Rio de Janeiro for establishing 5 levels of warning regarding extreme heat, N1 (normalcy) to N5 (grave danger to life). At its gravest, large events may be canceled. 😣 Just months ago this could have spared the life of a Taylor Swift fan, in a concert whose wet bulb temperature was 60o Celsius (I was there, can confirm). Back in 2013, with the peer-to-peer knowledge exchange promoted by C40 Cities and 100 Resilient Cities - Pioneered by the Rockefeller Foundation, me and my team, plus Pedro Junqueira, had access to info on heat islands and extreme heat, and flagged it as a major vulnerability to the city, along with pandemics, in 2015. The immediate actions were to consult with meteorologists, climatologists, and data people to establish which criteria would fit the City of Rio. Rio's residents are indeed adapted to heat, however, human bodies have their limits. So, by 2015, we had the scientific backing and the support of the Center of Operations' communication team, which without fail warned citizens about heat waves, sunscreen, shade, and more water for the elderly and children. Rio Resiliente was deactivated 🤕 when a new mayor stepped up, but the seeds had been planted. Mayor Paes, in his third term, along with his competent team, picked the ball and ran with it, with multiple actions to mitigate heat in neighborhoods, building new corridors and now with this early warning system - the system most touted by UNDRR. Again, congrats to all those city departments that contributed to this, that will be a forever fight, but one that will save numerous lives.

Cities naturally concentrate the water needs of large populations into small areas. Urban water supplies will be under increasing strain as the global population rises and environmental pressures escalate. How can cities around the world meet growing demand for safe, accessible water in the coming decades? Senior Fellow David Michel unpacks the challenges ahead for urban water security, infrastructure, and resilience, before exploring the need for an integrated approach adapted to cities’ hydrological, geographical, and ecological contexts.
