Such an interesting and informative EAZA animal welfare webinar by Fay Clark on sounds in zoos. This is an area where zoos walk that tight line of balancing what the animal needs and what the zoo needs. Zoos need to attract people to make money to fund the husbandry of the animals and their future species survival. But with people comes noise. The public can be loud, but also the things used to engage the public can be loud (music, animatronics, etc.). But then we also need to consider the sounds we don't hear, but some animals do! The 'vibrations' from the animatronics, the 'hum' from the electrics- even on standby, when we feel bass in our chest, do they feel it more? How high is the high pitch of Slade 'ITSSSS CHRISSSSSTMASSSSS' or the cackling witch to the animal? How does all of this affect fight/flight/freeze? These are just a few things I have to consider with my job. Good thing I love problem solving 🤓 We know comfortable decibel levels for humans, we invest in noise cancelling technologies and enforce acceptable levels for day and night. But what about the animals? The ones with different days and nights to us? The ones who hear completely different levels to us? The prey/vulnerable animals? Animals have incredible adaptations to enable better hunting and/or survival. Ear size, ear position, specially adapted hairs, different hearing ranges, the list goes on. Brilliant for enabling natural behaviours, not so brilliant for listening to Mariah Carey over and over. We have learnt that simple decibel levels may not be the best way to measure 'comfortable' levels for animals. What was fascinating during this talk was how decibels are measured on a log scale. With 60-85dB as human threshold, but the difference in this range alone is 100 TIMES LOUDER 😱 This is a really interesting time to be a part of the industry. The passion and hard work of these working groups and the support and inclusion of change from good collections are destined to make great changes, changes I am proud to be involved in, in any way shape or form that I can 🙂

Some of us with pets will volunteer or work in the animal welfare field. You might give your time to an animal rescue or shelter, veterinarian clinic or hospital, or even animal control. Whatever your role, if you intend to stay in the field you should consider adding To Save a Starfish by Jennifer Blough to your reading list. Read my review of this compassion-fatigue workbook at PPG Pets and Their People.
