At the #ChampionsofGood Regional Programme in Kuala Lumpur, Mr Effendi Azmi Hashim from Cognizant shared how his organisation focuses on alignment of purpose with their employees. Cognizant emphasises on the importance of having employees feel a sense of purpose in their work, and with the communities they work with. When Cognizant started formalising its purpose in 2019, they observed that when employees find purpose in their work, it drives business growth. Partnerships are a critical aspect in driving collaborative impact for the local community. One key partnership Cognizant has is with Microsoft, where they train disadvantaged youths digitally and place them into employment. Through their employee engagement surveys, Cognizant identified that a large proportion of their employees seek to work on projects that are impactful, and partnership collaborations accelerate this process. Busy busy busy! It's almost the end of financial year in Australia and everyone is busy busy busy. I'm no different... It made me reflect about the cultures that value 'being' rather than 'doing'. I sometimes wish I could be more like people from 'being' cultures. They value relationships, the good things about life, the food, the environment around them. It's about wellbeing and their quality of life. 'Doing' cultures value achievements and being busy. Now it's not that 'doing' cultures don't like having a good quality of life and relationships, it's just that they don't prioritise them as much. Frankly if you don't spend time on it then you probably don't value it as much as other things. I like to think I've evolved under the influence of other cultures but then my learnt behaviours catch up with me and I find myself being busy busy busy... I still have much to improve on! Returning to Japan for the initial 75 days has provided me with valuable insights since my integration into Concentrix in 2016. Despite my family remaining in the US, daily FaceTime sessions have kept us closely connected. 1. Global Tourism Trends - The influx of global tourists has notably increased for several reasons: - Post-pandemic, the JP government has significantly eased entry requirements - Favorable foreign exchange rates have made Japan an attractive destination - The end of the hot and humid summer has prompted an upsurge in sightseeings 2. Digital Transformation Efforts in Japan - Significant efforts have been invested by companies to drive Digital Transformation (DX) in Japan: - International customers often exhibit an agile review process for project - Conversely, domestic customers tend to have a comparatively slower process - Personally, it took three months to establish a bank account for international wire transactions, and there is room for improvement, despite streamlining the acquisition of a local SSN within one month The post-pandemic landscape in Japan has witnessed a noteworthy transition, where 45% of the workforce now enjoys the flexibility of remote work. This shift not only enhances work-life balance but also leads to a commendable 30% reduction in office space usage, optimizing operational costs. Commuting dynamics have similarly evolved, with trains experiencing a 40% decrease in peak-hour crowding. 3. Navigating Reverse Culture Shock - Experiencing reverse culture shock has been an intriguing aspect of my return: - There is a greater emphasis on personal details, such as age during interactions - The prevalent communication style in Japan tends to be more indirect - A cultural shift towards dinner gatherings, as opposed to the prevalent norm of lunch engagements in the US, reflects a distinctive approach to personal and family life In acknowledging these differences, it is important to note that they are neither inherently good nor bad. Rather, they represent the diverse reality we navigate. By fostering a deeper understanding of these cultural nuances, we can contribute to creating a more inclusive work and societal environment.
