As we gear up for Global Accessibility Awareness Day (#GAAD) on May 23rd, we at Allyable wanted to take a moment to remind everyone of the importance of web accessibility. Just last month, the DOJ passed a final rule emphasizing the significance of making websites accessible to all individuals, not just because it's required by law but because of the numerous benefits it brings to businesses, and the fact is the right thing to do. Our CEO , David Adi, recently wrote an insightful article discussing why web accessibility is crucial for companies looking to increase visibility, enhance customer service, and make a positive impact on their brand. With ESG considerations becoming increasingly important, ensuring your website is accessible is a no-brainer. David breaks down the best practices for achieving web accessibility in a clear and straightforward manner, highlighting how A11yable' A11y360™ tools can help in this process. It's time to prioritize accessibility and make the necessary changes now. Let's continue to work towards creating a more inclusive online space for all individuals. Accessibility is Political! In the quest for inclusivity, accessibility stands as a cornerstone. Yet, it is often viewed solely as a technical or logistical challenge. The reality goes far deeper: accessibility is inherently political. When we talk accessibility, we are discussing the rights, dignity, freedom of individuals. It's about who gets to participate fully in society and who is left out! Consider our digital world. Websites, apps, and digital services, most not accessible, are effectively excluding millions of disabled people. This digital divide is a reflection of broader societal inequities and highlights the need for political will and action to address these gaps. As a result, accessibility means advocating for policies and practices that prioritize equity, challenging existing power structures, and pushing for systemic change. Policies and regulations are in effect across the globe, like the Web Accessibility Directive (WAD) and the European Accessibility Act in the EU, Section 508 and the ADA in the US. And the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and EN 301 549 are internationally becoming political instruments designed to enforce digital accessibility. Their enforcement (or lack thereof...) illustrates how deeply intertwined accessibility is with political agendas and priorities. Advocating for accessibility means demanding accountability from those in power, whether they are lawmakers, business leaders, or tech innovators. It’s about pushing inclusive design from the start and ensuring that accessibility is not an afterthought but a foundational element throughout. Recognising accessibility is political, we must understand it requires collective action to bring systemic change. It's not just compliance; it's the right of every individual to participate fully and independently where possible. #Accessibility #Inclusion #Equity #a11y #DisabilityRights #InclusiveDesign
