4. "Alison: Did the HR leaders really pull a fast one on you?" Firstly, I just want to reiterate why I have decided to write these blogs about Sellafield, the NDA and the ET system. It boils down to this: I believe the leadership at Sellafield and the NDA puts the UK public at risk and the ET system failed me and the public when I raised my concerns. But back to my whistleblowing case. Yesterday, a manager called me from Sellafield. He has been following my blogs. He just could not accept that senior HR leaders had originally told me that they were terminating my contract for financial reasons. So here is the evidence: an internal document written by Lesley Bowen, shown in court, which proved that Lesley Bowen categorically told me that had terminated my contract for financial reasons. NB A few minor points, but nonetheless indicative of the ethos of those in HR. Alan Rankin, who spearheads the company's EDI programme, sat in this meeting in secret. He admitted in court, under cross-examination, that this was very poor behaviour. Also, neither Alan nor Lesley, with whom I had worked very closely, had the decency to terminate my contract face to face. But then when you are telling bare faced lies to someone, whose financial security you are about to severely impact, perhaps they thought it was easier to take the coward's way out?

I wanted to discuss the importance of keeping your employees and contractors engaged to help boost retention. As small business owners, we can't afford churn. The expense of onboarding new team members, whether they're employees or contractors, often outweighs the cost of retaining your current talent. As per SHRM's research, replacement costs can soar as high as 50%-60%, with overall costs ranging from 90%-200% of an employee's annual salary. Too often I see companies making short term decisions. I get it, you're facing tight times. Reducing your labor costs seems like an easy quick win. However, the labor market is still tough. Even when the pool was deep, it was hard to find good people. Here's the thing - retention isn't just about conserving funds. It's about securing the irreplaceable industry knowledge and experience that can't be measured in dollars. Yes, bringing in fresh faces may momentarily lift your quarterly figures, but what about the long-term trajectory of your small business? Raises can be costly. Here's a tip though, they're not the only tool in your kit. Here's some ideas I've used in the past to keep valuable talent when operations budgets needed to stay lean: Industry Events: Support lifelong learning by sponsoring your team to attend relevant conferences and workshops. This not only upgrades their skills but also signals that you appreciate their professional development. Spot Bonuses: These small one off bonuses are an excellent morale booster! Sometimes it's worth paying that contractor a bit extra. It's certainly better than having to find completely new teams, costing you valuable time and sales. Training Opportunities: Provide regular training sessions to help your team stay on top of industry trends and refine their skills. This will boost their confidence in their roles and deter them from seeking career progression elsewhere. Only use this one for W2 employees for legal implications. Acknowledgement: The power of a simple 'thank you' or 'great job' should never be underestimated. Regularly recognizing your team’s efforts creates a positive work environment and makes them feel valued. Bear in mind, a small business flourishes when its team does.
