I love to see initiatives like that of FASEB, providing support for caregiving costs associated with attendance at scientific conferences. This is a burden that continues to impact women more than men and can be a big barrier in the development of early to mid-career scientists. This initiative provides support for caregiving expenses to members of FASEB Member Societies - if this applies to you, consider bookmarking this for the future and/or sharing with other scientists who may benefit from this. I hope that more professional societies consider adopting these programs to support their members. https://lnkd.in/emhwttvd

The North West is now the third biggest hub for life sciences in the UK, according to research published by tax services and software provider Ryan Tax Services Australia | TCF Services. In a recent article in TheBusinessDesk.com, it was revealed that employment in the life sciences sector in the region has grown by 61% in the last five years, with more than 7,675 people now employed at R&D sites associated with life science businesses. There has also been a 28% increase in the number of life sciences sites conducting R&D across the North West, with several of our regions featuring in the top five areas now playing host to R&D activity in the industry — including Cheshire East, home to our Alderley Park campus; Manchester, where our Citylabs and Manchester Science Park campuses are located; and Liverpool, where Liverpool Science Park can be found. This is reassuring news, which demonstrates the importance of the North West and the UK more widely as a trailblazer for life sciences. It also highlights the crucial role of government-led innovation funding and incentives, particularly for SMEs, who drive a significant proportion of growth both in terms of economic contribution, and of technological and scientific advancement. Echoing the comments of our Chief Scientific Officer Kath Mackay in her Forbes article last month, further such investment is now needed — in tandem with a genuine industrial strategy — to provide a nationally cohesive life sciences approach which keeps the region, and the country, on the global map as a champion of innovation. Supporting Med Students Struggling With Match Day Results We've all experienced rejection and disappointment. However, not matching into a residency program can feel like a crushing blow for medical students. Finding no match listed after years of dedication, sacrifice, and hard work is heartbreaking. The emotional toll is immense. Feelings of failure, shame, and lost identity are common. How do we support students facing this profound disappointment? Extend a hand of empathy. Let them know you care. Listen without judgment and acknowledge their feelings. Share stories of resilience to inspire hope. Encourage them to explore alternative paths such as research, public health, or industry roles where their skills are still valuable. Foster an inclusive culture that recognizes temporary setbacks do not define someone's worth or potential. Help students connect with mentors and counseling. Make space for unconventional journeys. Before becoming doctors, we are all humans. Supporting students through hardship is vital to building a humane healthcare system. With empathy and practical guidance, we can help them thrive despite initial challenges. Talented, dedicated students always have more opportunities on the horizon. For now, they need our support to believe this truth. Our shared humanity compels us to reach out. Want to learn more about how you can support medical students who didn't match? We share the details and stories of resilience from Glauc Flock members who didn't match in tomorrow's newsletter: https://lnkd.in/gfQ7-23U

Creating growth opportunities for Scotland. Account Manager (Global Companies) at Scottish Enterprise
Suggesting it's one of Scotland's fastest growing industries, latest figures show the life sciences sector generated a turnover of £10.5 billion in 2021 - a 19% increase on 2020. The figures, from The Scottish Government, also confirmed the industry has surpassed its 2025 target of £8 billion five years early 👏🎯 Commenting on the latest statistics as he also congratulated the winners of last night's Scotland's Life Sciences Awards, Scottish Enterprise's Chief Executive, Adrian Gillespie, said: "We value the significant contribution life science companies make to our economy, and are working with them and our partners to further harness their transformative potential. "Scottish Enterprise has worked with more than 80% of last night’s finalists and life sciences is one of five high-growth opportunity areas we’re focusing on with our new ‘Scaling Innovation’ mission. With Scotland’s outstanding talent, global strengths, world-class innovation capabilities and infrastructure we are ideally positioned to scale our life science innovations for success." #LifeSciences #Growth
